I support breastfeeding in public, but I think it goes a bit too far?

I http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/cbc/090403/canada/canada_calgary_cgy_pools_breastfeeding_calgary I'm sorry but I do not think that is just what these women are doing here. I breastfed for a total of six years and would never do what these women do. I do not think appropriate. They are a bit "in your face" about it and that is worrisome to some, so a little discretion would be good. I mean this is not Greece, where women go topless. This goes in the sense of taste and I'm just as surprised to women who think it's wear G-strings in pools exhibiting the butt of their children small. There are children present and I think women, especially mothers should understand that a little tact and discretion is a sign of decency and respect for others. Agree or disagree? First two guys should not even read article …. and we all know why you do not have a problem with it.

I think they are going too far. Is it really necessary to be a sign that says "Do not eat in the pool" for anyone with common sense to know thay would not be allowed out a burger and fries at the pool. This is no different. these women have many other options. You can only go out and feed their babies on the side. What to do if the mother had a contagious disease and not know? Your milk can contaminate the pool. In addition, it could only pump a bottle or two the value of milk and carry with them and feed their babies because they believed

Breastfeeding Underweight

How I can get my 3 and a half month old baby milk powder?

I'm breastfeeding (not directly expressed per bottle) and want to finish in two months. I'm trying to make the formula so that you can use to get to the front to stop completely. Vomited (I do not mean much as all babies do) couple of times and each time I CryIA. It is not enough 550gr for now, I'll do without it and lose more weight?

try putting half formula breast milk and half and it worked with my son, some patients is normal, but is the best way to adjust to her belly. Good luck and congratulations to keep expressing, so long!

Breastfeeding Statistics United States

Gamble or abstain

It has been a major information campaign on HIV / AIDS for decades and believes that there is nothing really new in this particular case, the general public is unaware. Part of this campaign is the preventive aspect of contracting the virus. Although this article focuses on abstinence is not disagree with other means of protection against transmission of the virus.
"Abstinence, fidelity, condoms correctly and consistently are the only ways of success for all in the debate on HIV prevention. I think the message of abstinence alone does not solve the AIDS epidemic "- a phrase the American actress Ashley Judd. This true statement of facts is in full agreement with the former U.S. first lady yy Democratic presidential candidates in 2008, Clinton Hillary said "there are a lot of political pressure to talk about abstinence and deny support for condoms and education use. This policy will lead to the unnecessary deaths of many people. "This is also correct. You can not live the life of others or to monitor their activities and actions. Preach abstinence and prevention only other protection is far from being the solution. But as the use of condoms and other safe practices are not condemned Total abstinence the value most attention because it is a sure way to 100% of prevention, therefore, preaching, is to encourage those who are doing everything possible abstention, and thus put more light on the reasons to refrain for those who believe in him, but not the practice .. Before you hit the nail on the head, go through the channels of transmission from an infected person to a person who is not infected.
The transmission occurs when secretions from the affected are in contact with tissues such as those lining the vagina, anus, mouth or eyes (mucous membranes) or a skin wound, as such, for a cut or needle stick. The rails are made possible through sexual contact, sharing needles, and transmission from infected mothers to their babies during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding. You can also be transmitted by transfusion. The following methods can be classified into two broad classes. The ways to control or prevent the transmission and means of transmission control. The media can control or prevent these methods of communication with the virus that can be controlled or avoided completely by the involved. Note This definition is specific of the person who is at risk. The means of control are those that can not be controlled by those affected. Infected baby collapse in uncontrollable ways they can not do nothing about the situation. Fall victims to be unhappy and largely the blood may be in this category. For this class or category of transmission, abstinence can be preached because it was not his fault or negligence of the persons concerned.
In the category of control, using needles whenever he wants to take drugs and dumping of age after use, is a direct formula for the prevention of HIV infection through injection needles. This reduces the risk to about 99.99%. If needles actions of a person, not only use them every once is a great opportunity to be safe, which gives a good control effectiveness method. However, 0.0001% is be a probability sample and see how likely in reality. Therefore, to truly understand that abstinence is the emphasis would be on top two means controllable (injection and sex) and sex.
In the midst of sexually transmitted infections, condom failure can not be totally avoided in a formula given. Whatever the quality of condoms, there is still a chance it could break during sex. Some arguments emphasize that the virus is smaller the fiber of condoms and can still happen, especially when the male genital is very large, stretching the condom very well. Therefore, given the likelihood of 85% – 95% of HIV prevention for men and 95% – 99% for women if used correctly.
Instead, abstinence is right, 100% preventive absolutely no chance efficient and lightweight, without the insignificant, it can be. It is safer and easier to adopt. Remember that abstinence does not mean virgin forever, but to avoid more than one partner, and specifically to avoid sex before marriage and outside marriage. Probability is the probability of an event occurring and no matter how the value is negligible, because the situation does not exist. Is believed that raw chat syndrome (sterile female genital resulting Immature the loss or removal of a significant portion of genetic material) occurs once in 5,000 births. This does not mean raw chat syndrome and can not exist understand that a parent with a sick child with Down syndrome would not be willing to hear all the statistics which doctor, because the reality is that your child is suffering from what little chance of an accident.
In general, abstinence is the sure way to avoid the means of acquiring the virus controllable. And beneath the illustration, we justify this simple fact. The following table shows the estimated number of AIDS cases among people by transmission category in the 50 states of the United States America from 2007.
Man to man sex – 487 695
UDI – 255 859
Male sexual contact with male injection – 71 242
contact High-risk heterosexual – 176 157
Other (hemophilia, blood transfusions, prenatal exposure and risk not reported or identified) – 18 266.
[Resumption the rel = nofollow [Http: / / www.cdc.gov / hiv / topics / surveillance / basic.htm] http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/surveillance/basic.htm].
The first four are controllable ways in which the drug, others through sexual contact. These four forms of 990 953 If 1,009,219, representing approximately 98.2% of cases. Meanwhile, 1009219 735 094 cases are due to sexual transmission alone, representing 72.8% of all cases. Only 1.8% of the total effect is due to control transmission.
For the normal reasons, the occurrence of a situation because of uncontrollable factors should be compared with the same situation caused by controllable. Another idea that we can draw from this statistic that is an extension of the first statement, despite the control measures and means of protection available means of control are even more great presence of non-controlled. This justifies the fact that the only way this can be significantly reduced by abstinence.
One teenager said: "I created an appetite for sex and I do not think I can stop now." Human nature is such that if you allow part in an event more than once nice and steadily, began to aspire after this event because of their increased appetite. Dikke Charles, a popular English novelist of the era Victoria cites "submit your appetite, my children and they have conquered human nature." Humour is the man destined to be defeated and that way we can show that the capacity control abstained. If we do not overcome human nature and allow our tastes different or appetite to explode, think mutuality would not be a reality and life of the jungle "a situation resulting scenario would be possible. If we can control our appetite or taste of any or part of what follows, fashion, food, clothing, celebrities, drinks, sports is. Why not sex? Is it normal to have random sex with different partners? Until the nature of man can be extended, it could be tamed and the only way forward is through abstinence.
Zakovich Anton, professor of economics in Russia said, "Sex before marriage is like tasting the soup while cooking. You are the flavor of the spicy soup of the way before being cooked." If by chance It burns your tongue papillae or false? Would you be able to enjoy the soup later. Sex before marriage should not be compared to the soup tasting, you liked the soup know the quality improvement by adding more components if necessary. But what improvements need sex before marriage that is done when not married. Marriage is a long-term commitment and improvement of all factors involved, the best in privacy and the possibility of becoming. As regards more marital relations are not only medically wrong, but morally and socially wrong. If you think this idea is too conservative, so be sure check the status of extramarital affairs some celebrities like Tiger Woods and John Terry in relation to the general public and their fans. Then, the statistics will help to understand the contempt "social, extramarital affairs can stimulate.
Abstinence is not practiced, is perfect. As everyone has the opportunity to abstain. Dennis Wolfberg, the late comedian and actor, once quoted to confirm this statement. "I do not practice abstinence, they have improved." The main reasons abstinence becomes a difficulty lies in the fact that this potential to kill us. And in some cases, it is so bad in the extreme dependence. The only form of addiction sexual sexual exposure at an early age leading to continuing sexual activity as the child grows into adolescence and beyond. This also applies to addiction.
According to statistics SADD MISSION 2005, adopted in all states of the United States of America, 46.8% of all students secondary schools reported having had sex and 6.2% of high school students had sex for the first time before 13. Not only that, 14.3% of high school students nationwide had sex with four or more in their lifetime.
When talking about drugs, 9.9% of young people aged 12-17 were users of illicit drugs, marijuana 6.8%, 3.3% have used prescription drugs for nonmedical uses, 1.2% used inhalants, 0.8% used hallucinogens and 0.6% cocaine. Moreover, half of teens (50%) have tried an illegal drug when they have finished high school. Although these may have been made years ago but certainly, it's terrible for parents with information and probably all parties and stakeholders (especially the school boards and elsewhere) should give more attention to their children.
The best part of this statistic is that 12 to 17 young people who believed that their parents disapprove of their use of a particular substance, were less likely use of this substance that youth who felt their parents were somewhat disapprove or approve or disapprove. SO, this has to do with the house / Parent Training not to be discussed because it is outside the scope of the subject.
The fact is that this current generation of children are sexually active, even at a very early age. And for this reason, they need proper sex education with the sermon, not a formal approach, but is in love, care and attention. Taking advantage of the relationship understanding between the parent and child serve as a tool to accomplish. If this system is practiced certainly increase the percentage of children who take abstinence.
Now, in general, consider this scenario. Want to go to the mall to walk which is 5 miles from home, but there are three routes each runs about 2.5 km, which is the probability wild dogs fall into one, was attacked by gunmen in the other and for the latter was hit by a car occupied by their nature (although, these incidents occur one time in two months, but continued in such events). Do you still run the risk of following a bond short? Some of us knowing the nature of the events continue following one of these short routes so unhappy, bitten by a dog (or dogs) or have been attacked or struck by a car. This is what most of us. The longer short to go shopping, and back should not be a priority in your life and health. This is exactly the circumstances we faced in withdrawal. This route is 100% security, but we prefer the short-term pleasure, still would enjoy later in life and are enjoying a legal partner.
All said and done, other preventive measures are not absolute, and still give the place or the potential for the spread of virus to occur. If we are able to abstain why not give us the opportunity to 100% free risk of contracting the virus? It is a great gain and profit when you abstain be moral, mental, religious, and social course. It also adds fun and excitement their married life near future, if you are not married. Usually, you get the most, what you've been waiting a long time. Some people taste soup, two, three, four times and ultimately reduce or even lose their appetite, so do not enjoy the soup later, when it's done. But when the soup is deposited for consumption you fresh and new, you take it if we could finish a drum of it and always ask for more.
On a final note, in the consciousness from all systems Protection to prevent transmission of the virus are important, it is necessary to emphasize that abstinence is the best and safest way and therefore the best option as the best. Do not gamble, not to support her life.

Breastfeeding Vitamin E

2 issues….I need help with breastfeeding and c section scar issues…PLEASE?

I need help…I had a baby June 22nd. He was born at 29 weeks, 11 weeks premature. He’s still in the NICU, but I am pumping and taking the milk in. My mild supply seems to be dwindling down and I don’t know what do. I’ve done a little research online and I keep reading about some herbal tea with Feeugreek. Has anyone heard of it? Or has anyone tried it? How long do you have to take it before it works and long must you continue to take it after you’ve started. Does anyone suggest it or anything else that can help me with amount of milk flow and to keep it going?
And issue 2. I had to have an emergency c section…I’m wondering when I could start to use cocoa butter or vitamin e to help reduce my scarring?
I thank you so much in advance for all of your help and advice.
New mommy of a beauntiful baby boy….
I also was told to take vitamin e, phyto soy and omega 3? Has anyone heard of that as well?

Congrats on the new addition. I have not heard of the tea nor do i believe it will be all that helpful. I know what i am about to suggest may be a tiny bit hard to think about… but it’s a good plan anyway. Go to a lalache league meeting and meet other nursing moms. Tell them your story of your milk slowly dwindling down. Often they will allow their babies to nurse with you for a bit to help build up the flow of milk and help you keep producing the milk needed for your baby boy. That way you won’t dry up when your son is able to nurse himself. I know it sounds weird, but i know many mothers who have done this sort of thing and it helped the baby which is the most important thing! Your milk helps your son.. period.

Cocoa butter doesn’t work well, i have no idea why that old idea is still floating around. I suppose it goes by the way of using vaseline on nipples… an old stand by but not a good one. anyway… Vitamin E and Vitamin A will reduce your scar. Get the capsules or oil of each and mix them equally together and rub it in several times a day. It will help minimize any scaring and it will help keep it from not getting too raised up. Of course if it is still open at all, you are risking an infection if your hands or dish isn’t completely clean!

Again, congrats!!!

Breastfeeding Statistics

How many people actually end up breastfeeding their babies?

I’ve never heard actual statistics on how many people breast feed. And No, this isn’t meant as a debate, and I know there are many reasons why women must quit or want to quit or never do at all. I’m really just curious. What percentage of moms are still breast feeding at, say, one month, four months, six months?

As of 2003:

In hospital 70% of women breastfed
At 6 months, only 36% of women were still breastfeeding
At a year, only 17%
At 18 months, only 5 %

http://www.kellymom.com/writings/bf-numbers.html#usa

The CDC today reported that in 2004, nearly 74% of U.S. moms began breastfeeding their newborns, about 42% breastfed their 6-month-olds, and 21% breastfed their 1-year-olds.

http://www.webmd.com/parenting/news/20070802/breastfeeding-statistics-up-says-cdc?src=RSS_PUBLIC

The numbers seem to be going up slightly, but you can see how many moms give up… that drop from how many started breastfeeding in the hospital compared to how many were still breastfeeding at 6 months, is huge.

The numbers are even lower if you only count moms who exclusively breastfeed… these statistics include moms who might have supplemented with formula.

Why should you have your baby at home?

Breastfeeding Rates Usa

Does this prove that feminism kills babies, even AFTER they’re born?

http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/04/05/breastfeeding.costs/?hpt=T2
Study: Lack of breastfeeding costs lives, billions of dollars
“If most new moms would breastfeed their babies for the first six months of life, it would save nearly 1,000 lives and billions of dollars each year, according to a new study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics.”

Radical feminists like President Obama’s white mother refuse to breastfeed, because they believe that being treated like a milk cow is a form of sexist oppression of women.

Is this inexplicable hostility the reason why the breastfeeding rate in the USA is below the recommended level?

What would Rush say about feminists, based on this report?

I would say that most true feminists don’t even have a husband let alone a child. Glory Steinem, the mother of feminism, hated marriage and children. I believe that she did buckle to marriage in her later years, but she spend many years putting both marriage and children down.

Statistics Breastfeeding

Do people make up statistics just to trick people into breastfeeding?

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmF.rm8bG7ZdNs5_j_Pq4.Psy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090520064354AAHVxc1
Also, would you pleas try and answer this other question I posted. People just answered saying that statistics are made up to scare people to breastfeed.
You know what? I don’t believe it, I think we’re only told that so that we all breastfeed. My 3 nieces and 1 nephew were all formula fed and they are all teenagers now and have never had any problems what so ever with allergies or anything for that matter however, me, my 2 brothers and sister were breastfed and we all have different types of allergies ranging from hay-fever, nut allergies, asthma and allergies to food so don’t believe everything you are told.

Are you trying to stir the pot? You know, does it matter if people make up statistics trying to promote breastfeeding (not saying they do)? Does anything negative come from breastfeeding? It’s not like they are trying to “trick” kids into smoking…

This is just a silly quesiton if you ask me.

Breastfeeding Statistics By State

Cervical Cancer Statistics By Age

This is because most sites that are dedicated towards telling the truth behind ovarian cancer survival rates tend to do so from a more negative angle. Cervical Cancer Statistics By Age For example, in the United States only 50 percent of women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer will live beyond five years. And this statistic does not provide any official hope that the disease will remain in remission beyond the five-year timeframe.

So, is this really the truth behind ovarian cancer survival rates? Yes and no. What many sites won’t tell you is that the ovarian cancer survival rates are a lot more positive for women who have had their condition diagnosed early. In fact, for the 25 percent of women who are in this category, the ovarian cancer survival rate is an amazing 90 percent. Yet, most sites won’t talk about this because the majority of women will get diagnosed in the latter stages of the disease, stages at which the disease has progressed too much for long-term survival.

How can a woman increase her chances of being part of the 25 percent that do get diagnosed early? This is a very difficult question to answer. For some women waiting until ovarian cancer symptoms start could be enough to get an early diagnosis. But there’s a problem with this strategy. First of all, most of the symptoms associated with ovarian cancer are not drastic. Incontinence, abdominal swelling and painful sex, the three main symptoms of the disease, can easily be mistaken for conditions that are less serious. And even if woman suspects they are signs of ovarian cancer, it is possible that the condition has still progressed to a point that it has become lethal. This is because the symptoms are the same whether the tumors are massive or extremely small.

Lung Cancer Secrets Revealed Click here

What’s the best solution for a woman then? Well, if she has ovarian cancer in her family’s history, she should consider getting periodic ovarian cancer screening whether or not she has symptoms. However, it should be noted that ovarian cancer screening, at least in its current state is not full-proof. It has a high rate of misdiagnosis, which could subject a woman to unnecessary surgery, chemotherapy or other types of ovarian cancer treatment. Yet, if a woman is in a high risk category, ovarian cancer screening could be the very thing that saves her life.

In conclusion, when it comes to the truth behind ovarian cancer survival rates, there is another more hopeful side to the story. The key is trying to get early diagnosis, especially if you have the disease in your family. For everyone else, it’s best to take preventative measures, since the risk of misdiagnosis from an ovarian cancer diagnosis may be too high. Preventative measures include: breastfeeding, having your first child before 35 but not before 20, taking birth control pills and having a hysterectomy.

Breastfeeding Effects On Mother

What are the side effects Paxil for nursing mothers?

My wife was prescribed Paxil for postpartum depression. From infancy mother, she wondered what effect it will have on the HVE baby?

Paxil has low blood plasma levels of the mother, and lower transfer rate for human milk. Was detected in blood plasma of 7 of 8 breastfed infants in one study, 16 children in a second study, all 24 babies in a third study. For babies exposed to Paxil in the womb, it is clear that withdrawal can occur 24-48 hours after birth.

Breastfeeding Bib

What to do with 17 week old baby?(feeding/sleeping)?

Since our daughter was 15 weeks old, she’s now 17 weeks. Her days have turned differently can barely get 1 30min nap in the morning and same in the arvo. Night time she was sleeping through 8.30-7 now its 8-3/4/5am. I am aware that she’s more alert and wants to be awake to see everything. I am breastfeeding and have in the last few days introduced some rice cereal. To see if we can settle her more efficiently. Or do I need a strict routine e.g up at 7am, nap at 9am etc etc then bed around 7pm with the dreamfeed. SHe just seems all over the shop and its confusing me! Also its tiring. ANy suggestions? also she puts everything in her mouth, bibs are saturated with dribble? so maybe teeth on the move?

Strict scheduling is associated with ‘failure to thrive.’ Clock-watching offers no benefits to babies and only serves to turn their mothers into drudges…

Just follow her cues and nurse, nap and cuddle on demand for some time yet.

It is too early for rice cereal and the idea that it will “settle” a baby is a wives’ tale. See http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/solids-sleep.html & http://drjen4kids.com/myths/mythrice.htm

Newborn Breastfeeding Patterns

I have a 1 week old baby and trying to establish a feeding pattern.?

i am breastfeeding and under advice doing it on demand but my baby can suckle for more then an hour. a friend recommended i establish a cycle of feeding baby every 3 hours to cut down the amount of time she suckles in one period, but my baby as all newborns, can have sleeping periods of longer then 3 hours, should i wake my baby up to feed her or is this wrong?

I’d wake the baby to feed every 3 hours because if you don’t, she’ll be ravenous when she wakes and could get more frustrated if she has ends up encountering problems latching and might throw a fit when you stop feeding to burp her. I’d do the every 3 hours–I don’t agree with feeding on demand because your baby will be stuck in that mindset for life. If I were you, I’d wake the baby every 3 hours, and then lengthen that time at night in a couple of months–every 3 hours during the day, but every 5 or 6 at night. Good luck!

Breastfeeding Schedule Chart

Helping Your Child Be Healthy and Fit

Today, feeding children is based on concerns about heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and high blood pressure. There is reason to be concerned. More than 20 percent of Western children are overweight with a good chance that 50 to 70 percent of them will remain overweight as adults. It is important for parents to set good examples of healthful eating.

Research shows that children develop eating habits similar to those of their parents. While it is a parent’s job to provide balanced selections from the five food groups, children can be allowed a certain amount of freedom to choose what and how much they eat. Poor eating habits and craving for sugar snacks and fatty foods may develop if parents fail to direct the decision making process. Remember that the issue isn’t “good foods” versus “bad foods”.

If children balk at food put before them, don’t worry. Studies show children will, over time, eat the amount of food that is right for them if they are offered healthful choices. You can’t expect a child to want to eat broccoli if chips are offered, or drink milk or orange juice when parents are drinking sodas. Of course, an occasional high fat food, gooey dessert, sugary snack, or soda is permissible, provided they are not substitutes for nutritious foods. Parents can make eating a pleasure for the entire family by helping create positive attitudes about food that will lead to a lifetime of good health.

What are the five food groups, and how can we help the entire family eat a balanced diet? The food guide pyramid on this page shows how to select a balanced diet and how to teach your child to make wise choices. How many servings do you need each day?

Calorie level 1,600(Many women and older adults)
2,200(Children, teen girls, active women and most men)
2,800(Teen boys and active men)

Bread Group Servings 6(Many women and older adults)
9(Children, teen girls, active women and most men)
11(Teen boys and active men)

Vegetable Group Serving 3(Many women and older adults)
4(Children, teen girls, active women and most men)
5(Teen boys and active men)
Fruit Group Servings 2(Many women and older adults)
3(Children, teen girls, active women and most men)
4(Teen boys and active men)

Milk Group serving 2-3(Many women and older adults)
2-3(Children, teen girls, active women and most men)
2-3(Teen boys and active men)

Meat Group Servings 2, for a total of 5 ounces (Many women and older adults)
2, for a total of 6 ounces (Children, teen girls, active women and most men)
3 for a total of 7 ounces(Teen boys and active men)

Total Fat (grams) 53(Many women and older adults)
73(Children, teen girls, active women and most men)
93((Teen boys and active men)

These are the calorie levels if you choose low fat.lean foods from the 5 major food groups and use foods from the fats, oils, and sweets group sparingly. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, teenagers, and young adults to age 24 need 3 servings. A balanced diet includes food from each of the following food groups:
1. Grains (bread, cereal, rice, and pasta);
2. Fruit (fresh, dried, or unsweetened canned);
3. Vegetables (raw or lightly cooked);
4. Meat (meat, poultry, fish, dried beans, eggs, and nuts); and
5. Dairy (milk, yogurt, and cheese).
Offer your children nutritious choices for meals and snacks. This way you can help them control their own diet. For example, you might offer a choice of an apple, an orange, or a banana. With older children (aged 7 and up) you can start by planning a menu together, letting the children check to make sure it includes all five food groups.

Remember that each of the food groups provides some, but not all, of the nutrients a child needs. Foods in one group can’t replace those in another. No one of these major food groups is more important than another. For good health, all are necessary. What’s for breakfast? Many of us do not eat in the morning. Estimates suggest that up to 25 percent of all school-aged children leave the house without breakfast.

You may think that breakfast is just another meal. For a child, breakfast provides much needed energy (calories) to start the day off right. Adults may be able to make up for skipped breakfast by grabbing something on the way to work or while doing morning errands. Your child, however, does not have that opportunity. A nursery school child usually has a mid-morning snack 3 to 5 hours after waking up. After nursery school, few children are offered a morning snack. Getting your child to eat breakfast isn’t always easy. Try to tune into your child’s morning personality. A sleepyhead may need a quick breakfast. An early riser may like to eat breakfast before getting dressed. If this conflicts with your morning schedule, let your children get their own breakfast. Even a 6 year-old can open a container of yogurt.

A good breakfast consists of complex carbohydrates and simple sugars (breads, whole grains, fibre, fruits, and vegetables); proteins (dairy, chicken, beef, fish, eggs, nuts, and dried beans), and some fat. Carbohydrates and simple sugars offer quick energy but leave the stomach quickly. A breakfast of only carbohydrates can give a child mid-morning discomfort. When milk, cheese, yogurt, lean meat, or an egg is added, the food stays in the stomach longer and provides sustained energy.

Play Time:
Physical fitness is a vital part of being healthy. For children, being and staying physically fit can happen with activities they refer to as PLAY! Play that makes them breathe deeply is aerobic exercise. Aerobic activities such as bicycling, jumping rope, roller skating, running, dancing, and swimming can be beneficial if they are done for 12 to 15 minutes without stopping. The young child develops an active lifestyle as he or she begins to creep, crawl, and then walk.

Young children learn how to move in their environment by playing alone in their own personal space. As children grow, they hop, march, run, roll, toss, bounce, and kick. Their bodies are changing in terms of height and weight, and they are beginning to form a self-concept through comparison with others as they move. When play is organized into specific movements, it becomes exercise. For exercise to become part of each day, these movements or activities should meet the interests and needs of your child. Play is the beginning. Children can follow their own paths to lifetime fitness by exercising for fun and at their own pace. Watching too much TV can deprive your child of opportunities to play and exercise. Set a good example. Limit TV watching. Walk to your destination as often as possible. Play active games with your child. Help form neighbourhood sports teams and participate in the recreation.

Everyone can exercise. Certain exercises keep your heart and lungs healthy. Strong, flexible muscles can be developed with exercise. As your child achieves fitness through exercise, a growing self-confidence will be another benefit of a fitness routine.

Staying Well:
Reducing the risk of disease is a major goal in helping your child grow up healthy. Bacteria and viruses cause disease and sickness, and cleanliness can help prevent the spread of these germs. Sharing such items as a comb, toothbrush, hairbrush, or cup, even among family members, can also spread disease. Having clean clothes and daily baths shows children that being clean not only feels good, but also helps them stay well.

You can teach your children to wash their hands at an early age. Tell your children that skin can stop germs from entering the body, and washing can reduce the risk of infection if your child has a cut or scrape. Explain, too, that harmful germs and viruses can be spread by a sneeze or a cough. Teach your child to stay away from people who are sneezing and coughing. Children can help prevent the spread of disease if they cover their sneezes or coughs with a tissue. Everybody has an internal disease fighting system (immune system) made of antibodies and white blood cells. Your child can help that immune system function well by getting enough sleep, by eating nutritious meals, and by exercising.

Vaccinations also prevent disease and play an important part in helping your child grow up healthy. The idea of having a shot may be frightening to a child. Help your child understand that this vaccination is a medicine that prevents disease. It’s a lot more fun to be playing with friends than to be sick. A vaccination chart for keeping track of immunizations can be found on the inside front cover. The importance of vaccinating children at the appropriate ages cannot be overemphasized.
