Breastfeeding In The Workplace

breastfeeding in the workplace
what do u think about Adult (male) Breastfeeding?

The fatwa encourages women to let their male coworkers breastfeed on them to remove evil thoughts from their male brain and avoid sexual harassment at the workplace, because once the male drinks the female’s milk, they become related and it would be wrong for them to have sexual desires for each other. [snip]

So according to this article, scholars at the Al Azhar University in Cairo have issued a fatwa making adult breastfeeding?????? permissible.

So you really think this potential foreplay will stop sexual desire? It will either fire it, or cause workers to throw up, not to mention the fact it is just WRONG.

Health Tips for Breastfeeding Mums

Breastfeeding baby takes a lot of time and when you cannot hand over the baby and bottle to someone else for a turn you may find yourself getting very tired. This is especially likely while baby needs to feed at night or is colicky and fretful. It is possible to get a little doze throughout the day if you lie down to feed the baby. Even if you half-doze for 5-10 minutes you’ll find it restful and energizing.

If you begin to feel that the only time you get outside is when you hang the nappies, then leave the housework, pop baby into the pram and go for a walk around the block or through the park. Even wheeling the pram through the mall can make you feel rejuvenated. This is especially likely while baby needs to feed at night or is colicky and fretful. It is possible to get a little doze throughout the day if you lie down to feed the baby. Even if you half-doze for 5-10 minutes you’ll find it restful and energizing. While you are out you might be able to get to know the neighbours, or arrange to meet a friend somewhere for a coffee.

Arranging a baby-sitter once a week while you take some time out for yourself is also a good idea. You may only walk to the library and back. Or you might decide to take a craft class or play some sport. Doing a crossword or a jigsaw puzzle are two home activities that can help you feel like you are still using your brain.

How Long Breastfeeding

How long post-breastfeeding does it take for my milk to dry up?

I breastfed my daughter until I was five months pregnant with my son, whom I nursed for 13 months. i finally weaned him one month ago, but I still have milk. I am not engorged and it’s not uncomfortable, but when I am sexually aroused, milk leaks, or sprays out. How long does it take for this to dry up completely, and is there anything i can do to help it stop??
SOOO tired of being a milkmaid!!:)

I hear you and I only breastfeed for about 7 months. Some women dry up fast and others it takes longer. My boyfriends Mom who never breastfeed (years ago) told me she could still get milk out of her breasts years later. Only your body will make the decision when it’s going to stop. I guess you’ll still have wear the lovely nursing pads a little longer : – )

Breastfeeding Colostrum

breastfeeding colostrum
has anyone ever started off bottle feeding then changed their mind and started breastfeeding?

my baby was born on wednesday and i have been bottle feeding, but i think i want to breastfeed now, because of the health benefits for me and for her,,, i know my breasts are still producing colostrum and milk because they are engorged, i planned on asking my pediatrician tomorrow but i don’t want him to think im stupid…

Oh honey it’s going to be just fine!! :) Glad you changed your mind, since it is so much better!!
Offer the breast constantly, to get her used to it and stimulate your milk production. Use your finger and thumb to express a few drops onto your nipple, then put her to your breast. Having the milk right there for her to taste helps!!
Do NOT supplement. Her stomach is VERY VERY tiny, and doesn’t need much food yet. The sucking is a reflex! Keep offering the breast and you WILL make enough milk!
Good luck honey. :)

Breastfeeding Newborn Colostrum

Having breastfeeding trouble w/ newborn . Baby latches on, feeds well but?

after feedings she crys, roots and still acts terribly hungry no matter what I do. I still just have colostrum, it’s the 4th day, and I am wondering if maybe it’s not enough for her? It’s killing me, worrying about her, so I give in and give her a bottle here or there when it’s really bad. I don’t know what to do, I ONLY want to breastfeed, no bottles, but It’s so hard when I can see she is not full and last night for example..I fed her at 3am, switched off breasts every 15 mins, and did this till this morning at 8am! She only would be satisfied a couple times for like 10minutes and then cry. What is wrong?! :(

Have you tried giving her a pacifier? Maybe she just needs the soothing of sucking on something. Try giving her your finger when you finish feeding her to see if she will quiet down. If that doesn’t work than sorry I wasn’t very helpful. Good luck. You must be really tired.

Breastfeeding Upset Stomach

Peptobismol and Breastfeeding?

I took some pepto for an upset stomach only to find out you shouldn’t take it while you are nursing a baby. My son is 1 year 1 month and I only nurse him at 10pm, do you think we’ll be okay to nurse by then?

There is no reason to interrupt nursing because you took bismuth subsalicylate. There is a theoretical risk that if your baby were sick then salicylate could cause Reye’s syndrome, but its never been proven that any salycylate other than acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin) actually causes Reye’s Syndrome let alone in the incredibly small amount that would be in mom’s milk from a single dose (vs chronic use)

http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/f?./temp/~SJfdQD:1

Summary of Use during Lactation:
Because of the possibility of absorption of salicylate from the breastmilk by the infant, alternatives are preferred.[1]

Drug Levels:
Maternal Levels. No published information was found on the use of bismuth subsalicylate during breastfeeding. Infant salicylate intake is estimated to be less than 1% of the maternal dose when both drug and metabolite are considered.[2]

Infant Levels. Relevant published information was not found as of the revision date.

Effects in Breastfed Infants:
One case report of metabolic acidosis was caused by salicylate in a 16-day old breastfed infant whose mother was taking aspirin 650 mg every 4 hours for arthritis.[3] However, there was no measurement of salicylate in maternal serum or milk and it is unclear whether the infant had received any salicylate directly.

Possible Effects on Lactation:
Relevant published information was not found as of the revision date.

AAP Category:
Salicylates are rated as associated with significant effects on some nursing infants and should be given to nursing mothers with caution.[4]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bismuth_subsalicylate

Children should not take medication with bismuth subsalicylate while recovering from influenza or chicken pox, as epidemiologic evidence points to an association between the use of salicylate-containing medications during certain viral infections and the onset of Reye’s syndrome.[5] For the same reason, it is typically recommended that nursing mothers not use medication containing bismuth subsalicylate (such as Pepto-Bismol) because small amounts of the medication are excreted in breast milk and pose a theoretical risk of Reye’s syndrome to nursing children.[6]

http://www.drugs.com/mmx/bismuth-subsalicylate.html

Although no cases have been documented with the use of bismuth subsalicylate, {18} {40} recent studies indicate that use of aspirin, a salicylate, may be associated with the development of Reye’s syndrome in children with acute febrile illnesses, especially influenza and varicella. There is insufficient data to establish an association between the use of nonaspirin salicylates, such as bismuth subsalicylate, and the occurrence of Reye’s syndrome. However, it is recommended that children and adolescents who have or are recovering from influenza or varicella not be given bismuth subsalicylate to treat nausea or vomiting. Since nausea or vomiting could be an early sign of Reye’s syndrome, these patients should be referred to a physician. {01} {04} {21} {24} {32}

http://www.keepkidshealthy.com/medicine_cabinet/aspirin_salicylates.html

There are so many alternatives to aspirin, like ibuprofen and acetaminophen, so most people would say no and they never give their children and teens aspirin. Other people simply avoid aspirin and advise avoiding products with non-aspirin salicylates when their child has or is recovering from a viral infection with a fever, like the flu or chickenpox, but would use something like Pepto-Bismol or Kaopectate if their older child had an upset stomach or diarrhea, but didn’t have a fever and especially didn’t have chickenpox or the flu.

Also remember that the AAP, in the practice parameter: The management of acute gastroenteritis in young children, makes the recommendation that ‘as a general rule, pharmacologic agents should not be used to treat acute diarrhea’ and that ‘the routine use of bismuth subsalicylate is not recommended in the treatment of children with acute diarrhea’.

Interestingly, one researcher, in the article ‘Whatever happened to Reye’s syndrome? Did it ever really exist?’, believes that we are seeing so much less Reye’s syndrome because we have gotten better at diagnosing inborn errors of metabolism, and that many people who were thought to have Reye’s syndrome may have had other conditions. This is controversial though.

Blisters Breastfeeding

I have a lump in my nipple, what could it be?

I have a red bump on the tip of my nipple that kind of looks like the beginning of a button. I searched and found that women who are breastfeeding may develop blisters milk. I'm not breastfeeding, I'm not pregnant, and I've never had a child. It is sad and painful when I touch. What could be? What should I do?

It could be an ingrown hair, a hair follicle, or as you said, a button. I and also sometimes after a while they left, I would keep an eye on its own it for the next two weeks and if it changes from being extremely painful, color or size different, go see a doctor because if a mole or something had done the same.

How long does the pain/engorgement last after completely stopping breastfeeding?

I stopped breastfeeding my now 5 day old son. I wasn’t completely breastfeeding him to begin with…he maybe had 2-3 feedings a day by breast (the rest of the feeding was w/ formula).

So, the hardening started on Sat. and they became completely engorged by Sun. and way worse today.

When will the pain and engorgement go away?

Thank you. Please no judging. Only answers to the actual question please.

Mine were back to normal by the end of the 4th day, it might be a few days longer. It all depends on the woman.

Cradle Hold Breastfeeding

cradle hold breastfeeding
breastfeeding in public?….help?

Hi, my son is almost 2 months old and I have a lot of anxiety about nursing him in public. I don’t know how to nurse him without using the Boppy. I lay him on the boppy and use the cross cradle hold to feed him. I feel very nervous about having to feed him while we are out and about without the boppy. I see other mothers nursing their babies in public without boppies but I can’t seem to figure out how to do it. Can someone give me so advice about how to wean myself from using the boppy?

Thanks

Honestly, it’s all about your comfort. If you need a boppy pillow, you could try crossing your legs, (ankle on knee) and placing a receiving blanket in your lap. This would provide enough support for baby and you could then nurse.

But before you take this to the mall, you should really do it at home in every chair in your house.
Also, if you have a really great sling, you can place baby in that, put blanket over the shoulder and nurse in complete privacy, without sitting down at all.

You should focus on the health of your child and your own health and nutrition. After Now all you have to think about how to recover lost strength and provide good nutrition to your baby.

An outline ideal food for a new mom would consist of:

* 2000 calories per day
* A small amount of fiber
* About 50 percent of the carbohydrate contribution
* The contribution of 30 percent protein
* The contribution of 10 percent fat

And you can start taking your favorite foods once again that it is possible to be interrupted during pregnancy. But remember, do not let too are looking to drop the pounds gained during pregnancy. And before trying any quick fix diets or diet pills ensure that plans and pills absolutely sure, because what you eat is also food for the baby.

Combined with a healthy diet, exercise is the most effective methods for weight loss after pregnancy. No doubt you'll be busy as a new mom, but exercise is still important especially early, as there will be resistance and regain lost muscle tone during pregnancy.

Exercise is also a good way to improve mood if not overdone and will help ensure that does not begin to see it as a task. The idea is to reduce total body fat while improving muscle tone, at the same time, although this should be a gradual process.

It must be reiterated that the loss should not be regarded as something that should be done as quickly as possible because truth out of the same kind of rhythm, was released.

With a good nutrition program and moderate exercise, you can expect to lose the weight gained during pregnancy within a reasonable time lag.

Stopping Breastfeeding Questions

stopping breastfeeding questions
Is is normal to get moody when you stop breastfeeding?

Last question! I stopped breastfeeding and I am so moody the last few days, worse than PMS. Is this normal and what if anything can be done to alleviate it? I am going to try breastfeeding again but if that doesn’t work then what?

You may want to talk with your doctor. You mentioned in your previous posts that your baby was about 5 weeks old, you may be experienced postpartum depression or just a regular hormone change. You just gave birth and your body has to adjust to your hormones trying to regulate themselves to a pre-pregnancy state. I know it seems practically impossible, but try taking a few minutes for yourself per day to center yourself. You can either spend it exercising, meditating, soaking in a hot bath, or whatever relaxes you and allows you to contemplate the changes the have come into your life.

Baby Safety – List Of Tips To Keep Your Baby Safe

1. Keep your baby clean and neat, always.

2. Cut his nails regularly, properly and carefully.

3. Remove wet diapers at once.

4. Hygiene and cleanliness of genital the area should be maintained. Always keep genital parts dry. These body parts are prone to infection, especially when wet.

5. Clean the scalp regularly and properly to prevent dermatitis and fungal infections.

6. Baby clothing should be loose enough not to restrict body movements, ease aeration and prevent skin irritation.

7. Keep your baby’ room properly ventilated and lighted. Free it from insects and dusts.

8. Your Baby’ bed should be separate but close to mothers’. A water proof bed is preferable.

9. Musical toys are good for your baby. Turn them on and let him hear it.

10. Support your baby’s head when carrying him. His neck muscles are not yet strong enough to support sudden and snappy head movements.

11. For your baby’s nutrition needs, stick to mother’s milk. Mother’s breast milk is best. No known substitute can match its nutritional qualities. When breastfeeding, make yourself and your baby comfortable. Ensure too that your nipples are always clean. Take care of your health and diet from the time you lactate.

12. In case of difficulties with breastfeeding, feed your baby with cows’ milk. Sterilize feeding bottles with boiling water and keep them dry until their next use.

13. When nursing your baby with cows’ milk, you will need to further pasteurize or boil and cool it. There are viruses like brucellosis and bovine tuberculosis that easily spread through raw milk.

14. There are babies who are allergic to some substances or materials like milk, food, dress and cosmetics. Do not use any of them for your child when you are certain they are causing allergy.

15. Use mosquito nets regularly. Mosquito bites give rise to spread of deadly viral diseases like dengue, malaria, yellow fever and filariasis. They also cause skin eruptions when triggered by allergic reactions. Mosquitos are also irksome, their buzz and bites prevent people from sleeping soundly.

16. The surroundings must be kept calm when your baby sleeps. Infants need more sleep than adults. Growth hormones work hardest during sleep.

17. Keep track of the overall physical, motor, language, emotional, social and personal development of your child. Mark the normal development milestones at any given age. Measure weight and height regularly.

18. Bowel movement is frequent among infants. Potty train your baby as early as his 10th month.

19. Clean toilet seats using antiseptic liquid before and after their use. Do not let other children share one’s potty.

20. Seek doctor’s help everytime your baby shows symptoms of ailment. The signs include convulsions, excessive crying, fever, frequent vomiting, stiffneck, bluish body discoloration, diarrhea, breathing difficulty with grunting, etc.

21. Keep a separate first aid kit and medicine box for your child. Make sure first aid kits always contain dressing materials, sterile cotton, antiseptic ointment and lotion and forceps. Maintain a separate notebook containing contact information of doctors, police, ambulance services, and the like. Information on dosage and application procedures should be written on paper and posted close to the medicine box.

22. When driving with your baby on board, fix him with a separate seat belt.

23. When the baby goes out with you, put inside his small pocket his identity card and your contact information.

24. When your baby begins to walk, maintain your close distance to him and prevent possible injuries from accidental fall or slip.

25. Apply first aid in times of emergency. Lose no time in taking your baby to the hospital. Here are cases of emergency situations and the steps you can take:

a) Your baby may choke when he swallows solid objects that block his airpipes. Have your baby lie on his abdomen with his head in a lower position. Press the back towards his chest. You may also stroke his upper back. When all of this fails, call somebody who knows, has training or experience, and have hime help your take the object out using forceps.

b) In case of accidental poisoning, try to induce the baby to vomit. This aims to take the poisonous substance out of the body. But you may not do it if the cause of poisoning is either kerosene or acid. Wash the baby’s body with water so that further contamination through the skin may be prevented. Check to ensure what caused the poisoning and rush your baby to the hospital.

c) In case of burns, quickly take the baby away from heat’s source. Dampen it with cold and clean water. Do not remove burned clothes from the body at once. Cover wounds with sanitized cotton and rush the baby to the hospital.

d) In case of wounds, use clean water to sanitize the wound. Compress the wound and raise it above the baby’s heart level to control the bleeding. Make use of a tourniquet when applicable and when the bleeding continues. Apply dressing to the wound with sterile cotton or bandage. Then seek the help of a doctor.

e) In case of drowning in a bath tub, take your baby out quickly and keep his head in a low position. Press the chest gently or apply mouth to mouth rescusitation until the baby’s airpipes are clear and the baby is able to breath freely. Take him to a nearby hospital at once.

f) In case of electric shock, cut off the source of electricity. Apply mouth to mouth breathing and cardiac massage if the baby cannot breath on his own. Rush him to the hospital.

26. Finally, keeping babies safe requires total care, love and support. It is the way to keep them happly and healthy.

One the other hand, here is a list of what should not be done to keep your baby safe.

1. Do not shake your baby. The rough movement may cause damage to his brain.

2. Keep small items away from your baby.

3. Never give sharp and pointed objects like pencil or pen to kids.

4. Be careful not to let water enter into your baby’s ear when giving him bath.

5. Do not force your baby to take food when he is coughing or crying continuously.

6. Do not overfeed your baby.

7. Keep items or substances like mosquito repellents, ink, gum, moth balls, medicines, and the like away from your baby.

8. Do not use tight clothing for your baby.

9. Do not leave your baby perched on the edge of a bed.

10. Do not give your baby to strangers. Avoid having him in close contact with other persons.

11. Keep all electrical tools or devices away from your baby. Fix his bed away from electrical wires or sockets.

12. Do not leave your baby alone in your kitchen. This place is dangerous for kids.

13. Maintain water level in your bath tub to minimum and do not attend to other things like answering a phone call when your baby is taking a bath in your bath tub.

14. Do not allow smoking or smokers inside and within the premises of the house.

15. Do not allow pets to come in close contact with your baby. Make sure pets are injected with anti-rabies compounds and their nails are trimmed properly.

16. When your baby begins to walk, do not let him climb the steps or leave him unaccompanied upstairs.

17. Avoid very strong lighting inside your house.

18. When you and your baby travel, do not give your baby any food given by co-passengers.

19. Do not let your baby crawl on the ground or soil.

20. Avoid getting close to your baby when you are sick. Prevent your baby from getting near anyone who is sick.

21. Avoid taking your baby to crowded hospital wards, market places and dusty or polluted places.

22. Keep your baby away from table lamps. Lighting attracts insects and can cause problems.

23. Medicine should not be given to children when in doubt. Expired medicines should be discarded and never to be used.

Will breastfeeding cause your breasts to sag?

Well, I’m 7 months pregnant, and originally I had planned to breastfeed, at least for the first 2 months. The only thing is my fiancee is concerned that it’ll cause my breasts to sag. I figured that since this is my first child, and most like the only child I’ll be giving birth to and the fact that I’m only 20 years old, my body will revert back better than most women. Also note that I started with a B/C cup pre-pregnancy and now I’m almost a DD. So, with all those factors, will my breasts still sag?

Hi im 20 years old also and i thought that my breast would return back as well lol how wrong was i. I have two little boys a 1 year old and a 3 year old even if u dont breastfeed at all ur milk is still going to come in and dry up and that will thus cause them to “sag” but hey when u have that baby in ur arms im sure the both of u wont be worried

Is Breastfeeding the Best Option for Your Child?

Breastfeeding is a hot topic today with mom’s across the country. Is mother’s milk really the best for baby, or will formula do just fine? There are supporters on both sides of the fence, and the decision can be a difficult one.

There are many women who have an easy choice; they get to stay home with their kids either as a housewife or with a work at home job. They can choose to breastfeed easily, or opt for formula if they have a need. Others face going back to a job when the baby is still small, and have to decide if they can make feeding their child breast milk work or not.

Some of these mothers try to breastfeed as long as possible, switching to formula only when it becomes impossible to continue nursing and pumping isn’t an option. Others choose to go with formula from the beginning, so they don’t have to struggle through a transition.

Many women have difficulties producing breast milk and end up with no other option but to give their baby formula. They may agonize over which one is best. Lots of babies turn out to be sensitive to certain types or brands of formula, and end up with colic or bad gas that makes the scream for hours.

Formula is convenient; you can use it anywhere without worrying about someone being offended by you feeding your child, and it stores and travels easily. However, the current recommendation of most pediatricians is that mother’s milk is indeed best – particularly for the first few weeks.

Breast milk is thought to help pass the mom’s immunities on to the baby, and can strengthen them against possible infection. Children who are breastfed on the whole have less ear infections and instances of croup or colic than formula babies, and are reported to be less prone to tooth decay.

This is not always an option however, and formula is far better for a baby than cows milk. Some trial and error may be needed to find a brand that doesn’t cause stomach upset, but in the end bottle-fed babies are just as happy as breastfed babies, though they may battle a few more colds and sniffles.

There are many mom support groups that are in favor of breast feeding, and try to make it easier for moms who want to nurse their babies but are encountering problems. Many organizations also exist that can provide counseling, training for new moms on how to get he baby to latch on and suck properly, and even tips on how to increase milk production. Many women have benefited from such societies, as well as state run programs that also provide education, support, and breast pumps or formula depending on the need of the mother.

You aren’t a bad person if you don’t breastfeed, and you aren’t old fashioned if you do! Only you can make the decision that is right for you and your baby.
