Contractions Breastfeeding

contractions breastfeeding
Pumping while pregnant causing contractions? Bad idea?

I bought a breast pump today and am 32 weeks pregnant. I’m already producing milk. This is my 2nd child-the first one was almost 9lbs when she was born and I had to give up breastfeeding early because my body was not producing enough milk, even with stimulating my production through pumping. I had to switch to formula (and milk combination) much earlier than I would have liked to (at 3 months).

Because I’m already making milk, I decided to bottle it and freeze it for later but I’m also concerned because I know nipple stimulation can cause contractions and I’m already having Braxton Hicks contractions every day. I have a feeling that this baby is going to come early, even though everyone in my family is usually born late.

Has anyone else pumped milk while pregnant, and if so, did it cause early labor? I don’t want to put the baby in danger so I haven’t done it yet. The doctor says it should be OK. I just want to know that I have a surplus so I can breastfeed longer.

Why are you producing milk during pregnancy if you weren’t nursing? Don’t pump for 3 reasons:

1. Nipple stimulation does cause contractions. Why risk early delivery if you don’t have to. You don’t want a preemie. My OB told me to stop nursing my daughter as soon as I could when I got pregnant. You can have Braxton-Hicks for a long time, it doesn’t mean anything.

2. I believe your newborn won’t get the colostrum that is produced when your milk first comes in. This is essential for a newborn. You should check with a Lactation Consultant on this, and also to help you build your milk supply when baby comes.

When you do start nursing, drink a large glass of water while you are nursing, every time you nurse. Check with Lactation consultant on how many glasses of liquid a day you need while nursing (I forgot). The more your baby nurses, and the more you pump while nursing, the more milk you will have as long as you are drinking and eating properly. The Lac. Consultant will teach you how to check the diaper to see if baby is getting enough milk.
Also, relax while nursing.

3. Use the time now to enjoy your first child and show as much love and care to that child because it is challenging when the second comes along and may get jealous. Read up on what you can do to include the older child after baby comes.

Stomach Upset Breastfeeding

How to wean my one year of breastfeeding?

My son will be 1 to 21 of this month. And I want to stop treatment. Not waking up at night food, and slept in her room because she was 2 months. During the day the nurses 2-3 times. And they eat almost everything I eat. He juices and water in a cup training without any problems, but when I put milk in it, you know! Take a sip, making a disgusted face, and throw the cup. One of my friends said that her daughter was in the milk soy, vanilla, because of the softness of the soy milk is similar to breast milk. But the only bad thing is that she is getting an upset stomach when milk baby cows. Therefore, the only drawback I want my child in soybeans. My son seems to still want to nurse. And I know some people say I should let the same weaning. I do not know what to do or the right way to do it. How I can stop breastfeeding? Just hit?

You NEVER wean at once. It is difficult for you (who are at high risk of mastitis), drive your child (no reason to take any given night, an important aspect of his life) and rare time is needed. If you are convinced of weaning, so do it carefully and slowly. Provide a variety of other foods and beverages. (Cow's milk is very good, but not really necessary, as long as gets calcium from other sources.) Sometimes, when you breastfeed often, to anticipate desired, by diverting him with a snack a game, a hug from time to parent, or another good choice. If nurses bedtime routine, try changing your routine of going to bed to include other things (history, Songs, bathroom, snack, teethbrushing, etc) and when ready to leave that feed (probably the last to leave), have Dad take leave routine to bed for a while. If your child is resistant to weaning, or gets very angry has to decide whether weaning * now * is large enough to be ready to make miserable. Certainly no harm (and very beneficial) in the infirmary, and honestly, 2-3 meals a day does not look like much. Freeing weaning, or wait until it is both its development when it is less attachment is a very valid option.

Selling Craft Online – International Whore’s Day

This is part of a series of lessons on Selling Craft Online available by email subscription from me, Christine Abela of Gecko Gully.

If you would like to subscribe to the series, and get them daily in your inbox, please visit http://www.sellingcraftonline.com . It’s free!

I am writing this on 5 June 2010, and I have just heard on the

radio that it is International Whores Day. So, to all the whores -

have a nice day! (grin)

But it is also the start of the winter sales here in Australia, and

the two events have got me thinking. It’s the old idea of “any

excuse for a sale”.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a sale on your web site to “celebrate”

International Whores Day? Or any other slightly tongue-in-cheek

commemoration?

It certainly would draw attention to your emails. I purposely put

“International Whores Day” in the topic of this email, instead of

something like “Having A Sale”, so I can see whether this affects

the open rate of this email. So far, it has worked – you opened

the email! So maybe this sort of approach would attract attention

to your publicity emails if you used it to tell people about a sale

on your site.

You can take it as far as you want (well, maybe not that far in the

current case – stay within the bounds of good taste – lol). For

example, you could redecorate your web site, or just your home page

(if you can) with relevant images. Or have specials on products

that are somehow related to the event.

Put up pictures of ground hogs for Groundhog Day (Feb 2), reduce

the price of your embroidered towels on Towel Day (May 25), have

special offers on baby items for World Breastfeeding Week (Aug 1 -

7), promote Chinese-themed products for Lantern Day (15th day of

first lunar month).

Of course, the more wacky and way-out the commemoration is, the

more attention it will draw. Don’t bother with Halloween, Easter,

Mothers Day, Christmas, etc, sales. Relax and celebrate these

events with your family as they were intended. Instead, let’s

celebrate National Chocolate Ice Cream Day (June 7), or Opposite

Day (Jan 25).

You will find a list of the reasonably “serious” days here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_commemorative_days

And a list of the more fun ones here:

http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/index.htm

Enjoy!

Breastfeeding Engorgement Pain

Using cabbage leaves to dry up the milk?

I heard that you can use cabbage leaves to stop breastfeeding … Does this really work? What feel … Used for congestion, pain, powdered milk, or simply to appease cool ay? And how is it done? Only one leaf on each breast? When did replace? Any information or personal experiences are greatly appreciated!

Yes … say cabbage leaves can accelerate the drying process of milk. Once the cabbage is soft and warm it is time to replace it. It helps reduce inflammation and congestion. Use two separate sheets in each breast. I've also heard Sudafed or something that can be something to dry the milk. Google's only way to dry milk … The best way is to drop a meal at a time, so it will not be so painful. Believe me … I read about this. I stopped nursing about 3 months and he did for a year.

Do you think when it is time for our babies to have babies the breast/bottle situation will be different?

Do you think breastfeeding will be more the norm? Do you think it will be common knowledge that breastfeeding is the ‘normal’ way for babies to be fed?

Do you think there will be new regulations reguarding formula? For example doctor’s won’t be able to give out free formula samples and hospitals as well?

No, I do not think either way will be considered “the norm”… there will still be people who choose one, the other or both.. and people who judge others for their choice. I am almost positive that it will never change.

Breastfeeding While Smoking

Smoking weed while breastfeeding….?

My friend had her baby about 1 month ago and she was completely sober throughout all of her pregnancy despite alittle wine here and there. She did before she was pregnant smoke on occasions, as would I with her HENSE BEFORE. Now she has her little 1 month old and she has a breast pump where she saves milk and what not and the other day she smoked with a couple friends and I. I was sorta uneasy with the feeling when she was like “I wanna smoke, its okay I have enough milk saved for 5 days” I’ve tried to look around and see what the side effects are and how long its in your system but I haven’t been able to find any clear answer… Does anyone know???
i didnt not ask so that snotty people could put their two sence in about someone making THEIR own personal decisions. all i wanted to know was if it would really be out of her system in 5 days when her breast milk shes saved runs out. thank you.

There are going to be people who say that she is irresponsible and stupid for smoking pot while breastfeeding, but the truth is it’s really not that harmful.

YES, THC does pass through the breastmilk but it is such a small ammount that the baby would never feel any affects of it or be adversely affected by it in any way shape or form, so as far as safety of her newborn goes, she’s all good in that department.

I’m a young, breastfeeding mother myself and I also smoke pot occasionally. I’ve always been pro-marijuana and even though I did NOT smoke during my pregnancy, I did my research on smoking it while breastfeeding and I feel comfortable doing it.

Like someone else said, smoking pot occasionally and breastfeeding is better than not breastfeeding at all!

Weight Loss While Breastfeeding

Don’t think that you will be unable to lose weight while breastfeeding. In fact, breastfeeding makes it easier to lose the excess weight because your body uses the stored energy in fat to make milk.

The amazing thing about breastfeeding is it contains so many nutrients your baby needs and you will burn over 600 calories a day to just to make the milk! So keep going.

A really important thing to remember is to have a balanced diet! It is really important to not eat or drink things that will upset your milk supply, but you also don’t want to overload on foods high in saturated fat – like cheese. If you are eating the right portions from all food groups and exercising while breastfeeding you will certainly lose weight.

You can breastfeed and lose weight at the same time if you do it slowly. Don’t expect any miracle cures; plan on it taking at least 10 months to a year to get back to your pre-pregnancy weight.

Losing weight gradually through healthy, low-fat eating and moderate exercise is important. Losing weight too quickly releases toxins (PCBs and pesticides) that are stored in your body fat into the bloodstream, which, in turn, increases the amount in the milk supply.

Doctors, health visitors, and midwives will probably all remind you to eat well and keep up your breast milk production in your first few weeks after giving birth, but no one checks up on you when you’re several months on post delivery, and perhaps even back at work. Yet, these are the moments when, you’re most likely to slacken your vigilance and will need a good quality diet.

Try to be patient, the changes will happen.

The best way to lose weight in the long term and most importantly to keep the weight off is to enjoy the diet itself. Now I know that sounds odd. How can you enjoy dieting? Well how about a revolutionary diet system and eating program that will make you lose weight without restricting your diet to low fat or low carb’ foods. When my wife gave birth to our first child I was already on this diet, and recovering from major surgery. It was because of the success she saw that I was having that she decided to join me after the arrival of our baby. The “Diet Generator” that comes with this system will allow you to enter your own choice of your favorite foods from which it can create 40,000 different diet plans. You will never be bored with your diet again. You choose the foods that you want to eat, just plug in the system and the diet will be created for you. You can create as many completely unique diets as you want.
You will never have a day of boring dull diet food again.
You will be able to stay with your diet eating the foods that you like and so you will be successful at losing weight and more importantly keeping that weight off in the long term!
This is how I beat being unable to Lose Weight
This is the secret to long term weight loss

Breastfeeding Clogged Duct

Why are breasts sensitive now while breastfeeding?

I have been feeding my baby for 8 months and now my breasts are sensitive when I have a let down, in the breast and at the nipple. I’ve had clogged milk ducts and mastitis before so I know it’s not that. Is this just par for the course?
I have not had a period yet and he’s been on solids for 4 months now.

Strong let-down can give that type of feeling. Nursing more often can help decrease that feeling.

Also, pain or burning or throbbing pain (at any time of the nursing session) can be a sign of thrush. For ideas of treatment, see the link below.

Also, a sudden increase of pain could be the very first sign of pregnancy.

Breastfeeding Lying Down

Breastfeeding positions with a big baby?

I am breastfeeding my five month old. She is pretty big for her age (about 24 Ibs) and it is a little awkward positioning her in my lap to nurse. It looks like it’s uncomfortable for her to lie that way! She sometimes will refuse to nurse unless we are lying down on our sides.
Does anyone have any tips for positioning her better so she can be comfortable nursing without having to go lie down?

You could try “Australian hold” which is baby on top while you lie down, this makes it easier to watch TV and nurse (look I never said I was perfect)

If she’s good at sitting you can sit her beside you on the couch (not on your lap unless you are very tall) and she can lean over.

Engorgement Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding and burning sensation?

My daughter is 17 days old. Ive been breastfeeding only. I had engorgement for a few days the first week. Then everything seemed fine after that went away. Now a few days back, whenever I am nursing and every once in a while when I’m not, I get almost like a burning sensation in the top part of my breasts. Its not around the nipple or anything just the upper part of my breast. It doesnt last long, but it can really be very uncomfortable and painful. Has anyone else had this? Is this normal? What is it? Thanks for your advice.

congratulations on the birth of your daughter – considering it’s natural, breastfeeding has a lot of things to learn about, huh?!

Sounds like let-down to me too, although I feel it as pins and needles.

I’ve now been BFing my second daughter for 4 months and it all really settles down after 6 weeks, and even more so after another 6.

keep with it, it’ll all sort itself out and you’ll know what you’re doing and what’s happening.

Breastfeeding During Pregnancy Colostrum

breastfeeding during pregnancy colostrum
Is it possible to become engorged while pregnant?

I’m 34 weeks and leak a ridiculous amount of colostrum all the time, it seems like I leak as much and go through as many nursing pads as I did when I actually had milk and nursed with my last. This morning I woke up extremely sore & swollen, & they’re very hard & red like when I got engorged while breastfeeding. Can you get engorged during pregnancy, just from colostrum? Or is it just because I’m getting closer to my due date? I don’t remember hurting this bad last time! Is there anything I can do about it? My mom keeps telling me to use cabbage leaves.

you can become engorged with colostrum.. but be careful if you try to express some out.. you can cause contractions with the nipple stimulation.. defiantly tell your doctor..

Giving Up Breastfeeding

giving up breastfeeding
Will my breasts ever soften up? *breastfeeding question*?

i had my son feb 12th and i decided to give breastfeeding a shot (gave up w/my first child). I was directly feeding him the breast but once i left the hospital i realized i needed more help so i’ve been pumping the last few days. I now only pump, and dont offer him the breast. I will be going back to work in a week so the pumping will continue.
My breasts leak a TON and i have lots of milk. i pump before i feed him, which is about every 3 hrs, and in the middle of the night we just use formula. they are so hard and tender still and im wondering if im doing anything wrong? am i pumping too much? will m breasts ever get soft again or do they stay hard? i need some advice!!

It’s because you re using formula in the middle of the night. Breast feed him then too so your breasts do not get full of milk. When you formula feed him at night, your breasts have been used to the pumping in the day, they get full and hard because they are still producing milk. You said you pump every three hours, then your breasts are producing milk every three hours and when you neglect them at night they get full. You’re breasts will get ‘softer’ if you continue a constant pumping routine (If you want , you can even store this milk in the freezer for later).

The reason why the mothers love to use this device is its multiple features and the many benefits.

This device is called Freestyle because it is used without involving the hands and this enables the mother to get other jobs at hand done while the breast pump acts as a milk suction tool. The fact is, it is one of the first hands-free, electric breast pumps with dual system that has arrived the market and it has been labeled as one of the best. For this feature, the new moms simply fall in love with this.

The other features that give it an advantage over other products are the modern digital LCD display, memory, rechargeable battery that activates the pumps, and the tote bag. The miniscule system just comes into the grip of the palm, thereby allowing the mom to give attention to the baby. She can also pump milk where there is no illumination – the handy LCD screen serves as a nightlight as well as the memory panel.

The Medela pumps are generally used by working mothers who have to leave behind her baby in someone else’s care where timely breastfeeding poses a big problem. However, in those instances, the milk is collected first and then stored and cooled in sterilized containers, the baby eventually being fed at regular intervals. Another good aspect is that anyone from the family (perhaps the dad) can become the caregiver can do the job of feeding, thereby, availing the chance to bond with the baby. Mothers of twins can now easily feed both the babies together with this breast pump as breastfeeding them at the same time can be a hard job.

We can now take a look at the range of accessories that come in the package of the Freestyle Medela. There is the Soft fit Breast shields, support Belt and extension, Replacement Bra Adapters (Universal), Replacement Bra Adapters (Hook & Eye type), four 150 ml containers, tubing in various sizes, cooling equipment, Power cord/Charger and rechargeable batteries for the convenience of the busy nursing mother. In fact, it has almost got everything she needs for quick, lightweight and efficient breast pump on-the-go – all neatly arranged and easy to grab whenever and wherever required.

Breastfeeding Questions

breastfeeding questions
What are the major questions on breastfeeding that mothers and possibly spouses need information on?

I have been asked to present problems that bother breastfeeding mothers and perhaps their spouses too but do not know where to start.I need help.

Is the latch correct, is baby getting enough milk, what can mom eat, what medications are safe, is milk drying up and what can be taken to increase supply, baby is refusing to eat how to get them back on, how to express milk, how to store milk…the list of breastfeeding questions/perceived problems are endless. There’s lots of site that give the answers, here’s one that addresses many of them broken down into sections – you can basically take each section and turn it into a question form (one section talks about myths – from that you can create all kinds of questions)

and one more (actually contains real questions from members)

and one that I don’t think is mentioned on either page : vaginal dryness and decrease in vaginal elasticity due to hormones sometimes making sex uncomfortable, and some women experience decreased sex drive – you can see how that one would affect the spouse

Plug Duct Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding and I noticed a lump last night?

I finished feeding my daughter and about 30 min later I thought I was engorged so I felt and there was a large lump on my left breast (toward the top, close to my armpit) I decided to try and feed my daughter some more on that side hoping it would go away, but nope it didnt. So I massaged it and just went to bed (it wasnt painful, just annoying) I woke up this morning and I was going to call the Dr. but it was gone. So im just curious to know what it was ? A plugged milk duct maybe and I just massaged it out ?!

thanks for any answers:)

Sounds like a clogged duct to me. Good think you were able to massage it out or else it could have turned into Mastitis. SO not fun!!! Next time you find one, hop in a nice warm shower and massage that sucker. Good Luck
