Breastfeeding reduces the size of their breasts?

I've always had big size breasts, but it seems that little bit more. Even lost 2 stone and am now 9 stone, but the boob size has not changed. I wondered if I breastfeed if I have a baby reduce breast size? Hate me again crazy

after you finish breastfeeding or even if you do not breastfeed at all, when your milk powder, your breasts go back to the same size, but will a little loose. what happened to me and I breastfed and have small breasts before and after.

Blister Breastfeeding

I need feedback from breastfeeding mothers!?

Hi, I am, i lactating mother delivered a beautiful new baby by Caesarean section Oct. 1 Currently I'm late and I have a painful blister on my left breast (due to blockage of the poor), so it was that nursing my daughter to my right and I was pumping my left side (food and milk in a bottle at night) … my question is … How long it takes for the congestion disappears (which is the second day? And it hurts like crazy and !!!)… my breasts are still producing enough milk for my child as it grows because the bomb left chest 2 oz 4 times a day and only put in my right breast during the day (because it is much easier to give a bottle of expressed breast milk my night … I'll call the lactation consultant on Monday, but I need to know if what I'm doing right now is because I read that when the body is engorgment already set the amount of milk every day makes … I do something different ???…

Your body is constantly regulating the amount of milk your child needs, and milk will continue to meet the needs of your child – you need more milk as it grows, and therefore there are more too. Pump all you can on this side, and of course talk to the lactation consultant as soon as possible. But do not worry. In fact, breastfed my daughter until she was 15 months on one side (the opposite breast was not good enough for her and she would not be a nurse on this.) i Yes, but it was a lopsided box can do the job if necessary. I'm sure not going to pass this – Milk blisters heal.

HELP my 5 month old baby refuses a bottle, just spoon feeding! I only breast milk.?

Recently, my baby Do not take a bottle of 4.2 ounces per day at most …. she is almost 20 pounds in 5 months and 12 months on clothes because she is so tall, but she went from one type of bottle (Could only take a pacifier orthopidic the first day) for 5 months and have tried everything … switching formula … try differnt bottles and even a peak of some cups …… Always try to give a visceral and / or oatmeal so you can mix with the formula ….. I do not know what to do?! You need liquid / formula nutriets and I'm at a loss. She is not dehydrated ….. wet diapers are contstant ….. is just reject the bottle …. I've never available to them from the beginning. So she knows no differnt …… Does anyone have any advice? The only thing I found when looking for breastfeeding mothers with none of this and / or person in my situation. Any advice would be helpful, I am a single mother who works and its really stressful. THANKS TO ALL IN ADVANCE

When she takes the bottle is a feeling Panic? Or, finally, when she wants and not just interested in the past? She has enough liquid or wet diapers she ~ and suffering from constipation. She has to eat his cereal, or would be in a bad mood and hunger. All infant cereals are fortified with iron and vitamin also, like the formula. Babies have an incredible ability to take only what you need and then turn the rest And at 6 months, slows growth, compared with the first months of life. Therefore we do not need as many calories on a daily basis. It lets you know when you go to a growth spurt "request" for more, when the cup is empty or suck the formula down and sulk – it all happens too quickly to respond. her that I would not choose this time he was offered Karo in his bottle all the sugar and empty calories. It can even cause diarrhea. (It's great for occasional constipation iron in the formula). Keep ~ cup liquid water when it is in the dining room has its cereal. We also recommend you call the doc to do things for him too ~ this is what it is here! And if he is good with the claim that no harm -. Just remember that a baby is in pain or ill will rather than content. If she is hungry baby happy and all systems are operating correctly, it does well!

Hepatitis C positive and breastfeeding?

I have recently been informed that I am positive for hepatitis C (yes, I used to be a user drug users in my past life). In fact, I felt quite old and have been pain in the general area of the liver in my abdomen (I have gallstones, but too i) Anyhoo I am also breastfeeding my daughter and do not want to wean her for a while. I know that hepatitis C is running, but I can not take the herbs that can help my liver? How about a liver detoxification, it is possible while still breastfeeding? What about food and diet?

I recommend buy the book Herbs for Hepatitis C and liver, by Stephen Harrod http://www.amazon.com/Herbs-Hepatitis-Liver-Storey-Medicinal/dp/1580172555 which I bought Bühner Years ago, when a friend of mine was diagnosed with hepatitis C, and was very impressed by the research, information and suggestions. This book lists herbs that … 1) reverse or prevent damage to liver cells 2) have an antiviral activity against hepatitis 3) reverse hepatitis symptoms and optimize performance the dose of the liver, preparation, contra-indications and are presented in a very clearly that in depth. Some herbs are best suited to specific conditions associated with hepatitis C, so do not be final "Hepatitis C is a good pasture. You can sort the information that you in particular. It also gives dietary recommendations. I do not recommend a liver detoxification. This creates too much stress on the liver and the body to be of no use to you or your baby. Your liver needs be supported and nurtured at this time, no surprise in rehabilitation.

Cares To Be Taken While Breastfeeding Your Baby

You are parents of a child. And being parent is one of the greatest challenges in life. It gives a lot of responsibility to parents after being parents. Parents have to look after their child and treat him until he is developed very well. The development period of the child is around two or three years. During this period parents take a great care of the child. Mom feed the child, give him bath, look after his health and do many more things for the child.

The child’s health is important aspect that can not be ignored by any parents. Parents have to look after the health of the child. Parents should consider the health of the child and try to make their child healthy. In this article we are about to talk about the care to be taken while feeding your little one. Feeding your baby may be the most satisfying experience for you if you have became parent for the first time.  It’s your decision to choose the way you feed your baby- breastfeed or bottle feed. The method should be appropriate for you, your partner and the baby. In this article we have chosen the first way- breastfeeding. Breast milk contains all the natural nutrients that are needed to your baby for the development and growth. Breast feeding is perfectly matched for any child. Breast feeded babies may also have less risks of development of many dieses such as infections, asthama, leukemia, etc. Some breastfeeding benefits for mother include faster postpartum recovery; cost-efficient; convenient; reduces risk of breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer; quicker weight loss after birth. Sometimes you can not guess weather your baby is hungry or not. In such conditions, use clues that can be understood from the baby’s activities. Opening mouth wide like a yawn with tongue down and forward over the bottom gum, smacking lips and thrusting the tongue, bringing hands up to the mouth, fluttering eyes and rapid eye movement, crying, are the signs that your baby is hungry. If your baby is crying, it is important to calm the baby before trying to feed him or her.

You should take appropriate position while feeding your child. The position should be comfortable to both, you and your child. You should Support your baby’s head and body at the level of the breast.   Turn your baby completely on his or her side with nose, chin, chest, abdomen and knees touching you. Make sure your baby’s head is in a neutral position and your baby is ready to catch milk fro your breasts. Keep your baby’s body close to you by placing your hand and arm along your baby’s back for support. Support your breast with cupped hand (“C” hold) with thumb and fingers kept well back from the areola. Check out following points when our baby sucks milk. Your baby’s jaw should be moving in rhythmic motion. Baby sucks slowly and deeply with short pauses. You may feel any of the following normal occurrences in your body: uterine cramping, increased bleeding, thirst, breast ache or tingling, relaxation, sleepiness.

Breastfeeding Bleeding Nipples

breastfeeding bleeding nipples
breastfeeding-cracked, burning, bleeding…?

My left nipple is cracked, white, bleeding and burning. I called my doctor and she said that i needed to do the following:
1. take ibprofen
2. put some of my milk on it because of the natural antibiotics that it has
3. stop breastfeeding up to 3 days
4. but continue to pump and drain so that i dont loose my milk supply

I told her that I think I should put an antifungal cream in case I have thrush. But she disagreed.

So. My problem is that the pain is too much for me to pump. The pump even on a low speed feels awful. How can I drain my milk? If I dont will I loose my supply?
She says that I will form an absess if I dont drain and I will loose my supply.
Does anyone have any personal experience with this? I live in El Salvador and its hard to believe everything a doctor says or be sure that they are 100 percent right.
Thanks!

Everyone has good advice. I really dont know the extent of ur pain, but have you tried a nipple shield? You can buy/order it online at target and many other places. You should only use it until your nipples recover. It’s a flexible material that molds to ur nipple while you breast feed. It will protect ur nipples to an extent. I would also talk to a professional to help u and ur baby get a proper latch so that you dont have this come back again!!

Breastfeeding Compression

Another topic of breastfeeding?

I know you must be sick of me all these questions but heres another. when my daughter nurses it seems to get only the milk from the first few minutes, then stops and breaks the chin just sucks and sucks. I breast compression and snack will be here and there, but mostly there is not any and when I click to see if nothing comes nothing when you step on the other side and after a few minutes of power on the other side of the face that was before starting to flee. if I go back to this side and only have a little more bite. Why this happens. just get a big mouth fulls the first minutes on each breast, then only occasionally bite and I have to keep swithcing sides. she ends up falling asleep before they actually ate. Does this mean that my milk is low? What is it?

No, that are leaking when you put it on the other side means that there are a lot of milk in the game that you just him away. However, he did not understand. There are a few reasons: 1) I really do not want more 2) The block is bad and it is difficult to get milk 3) Breast milk is too fast and loose and frustrated. If you gain weight and then she could simply be a Snacker as my first. No nurse for more than five minutes after being for one month of age (except when he was sleeping). He was 20 pounds in four months I assure you that you have enough milk. Nursing more than once per hour is actually much more common then you think. If the speed is fast, probably hear clicks, choking or gagging when the nurses. You can also "explode" when the milk that goes after eating. Your shit may be green and frothy. When it opens, you can see the stream of milk. Closure problems are a little more difficult, especially the text. But I insist that no matter how perfect a "manual" or "is a lock if there is pain or the mother or the baby fails to optimize the milk, then is wrong to lock the pair of nursing. Not all baby nipples and mouth are the same, so why does everyone a lock. I have to run, I'll try back links

Breastfeeding Milk Supply Low

breastfeeding milk supply low
Breastfeeding… Low supply in one?

So my son is 3 weeks old and I have been breastfeeding as much as I can (he eats more than I produce so we have to supplement with formula). Anyways, I pump all the time so that my supply will increase but it hasn’t done anything and it seems like supply in my right breast is getting lower while in my left is getting higher. Anyone have this happen?

Any suggestions (other than pumping and increasing amount of feedings) that can increase my milk supply?

Well Lacey to tell you the truth I guess everyone has this same problem. My son is now 1 month old and he did not latch very good so I had to pump and feed him through a bottle. This worked good for a week or so until he needed more than I could make. i felt as if I was pumping hundreds times a day and it made me feel like I wasn’t allowed to do anything else. I started supplementing formula as well which at first he hated but it is better now. I feelmy supply has gotten weaker and weaker. I still pump frequently but I can only pump about 5 ounces with both breast and he is eating about 4 ounces at a time. I did however notice that my left breast puts out more than my right. I am not sure there is anything you can do. They say the more you pump but I don’t think that is true. I asked my Dr. and she said that some woman just dry up. Look at it this way.. You have gave him 3 weeks worth of breast milk which has fattened him up I am sure. It is completely ok if you have to do formula from now on. It is whatever makes the baby grow. I hope this helps. It bothered me at first that I may lose that bonding time but I haven’t and you won’t either.

Breastfeeding Cracked Nipples

breastfeeding cracked nipples
my wife is breastfeeding and has cracked nipples that are healing……?

she put Neosporin on and forgot to wipe it off before she fed this last round- I read that this may promote yeast in the mouth it was a small ammount. does anyone have any other info of the effects?

Watch your baby for any unusual signs that the neosporin could have made the baby sick. Also call your pediatrician and let them know what happened to ease your mind and they would be able to tell you what could happen and side affects. As far as the cracked nipples maybe even try letting them dry out and getting some sun on them instead of putting neosporin on them. It has to hurt or be uncomfortable washing off the neosporin everytime you breastfeed. I had this same problem. I watched dozens of videos and read tons of info on how to breastfeed but when I actually tried it for the first time with my week old daughter I thought I knew what I was doing. 2 days after she was born my nipples hurt so bad and they were cracked and bleeding. I was crying everytime she ate. I went and saw a lactation consultant at my daughter’s pediatric office. I ended up having a bad latch. My nipples hurt so bad. They recommended that you rub your own milk around your nipple and try to let your nipples get as much air as they can. Like sleeping at night without a shirt & bra. They also said sunlight too but I’m not sure how that works because I know you would get in trouble if you just walked around town without a shirt and bra on lol. Anyways I had been using samples of that purple package for cracked and dry nipples called lasinoh (spelling?)The consultant said still air and your own milk will heal them faster. I also got a nipple shield from the consultant. It’s so great it’s like a bandaid for your nipples lol. They are clear silicone I think? And go right over your nipple and the baby continures to nurse as normal. They carry nipple shields at babies r us for $8. They really help. Tell your wife about the shields, it will make nursing more bearable while her nipples heal.

Breastfeeding Painful Nipples

Breastfeeding is too painful. Should I use formula?

Ive been breastfeeding for only a week and its soo painful that it makes me cry. I talked to a LC and she said her latch is good. My nipples are just so sore and I don’t know if I can do it much longer. I have a pump but I only get approx. 1.5 oz each time and that’s not enough for her. [shes a hungry little girl] but I feel like such a failure because breastfeeding isn’t going so well.
I am using Lanolin cream and I let milk dry on my nipples. I keep them exposed to air as much as possible as well.

It takes time for your nipples to toughen up. Unfortunately, that’s part of the very early stages of breastfeeding. Your daughter having a good latch is half the battle. The benefits of breastfeeding are so profound (both for her and you) that if you can possibly stick it out, you should. Do a little research on breastfeeding health benefits for baby and mommy, and maybe that will make this temporary pain more bearable. (For most Moms the first two weeks are the worst.)

As far as the pain goes, ibuprofen is helpful, as is Lansinoh cream. Make sure that you are not washing your nipples with soap in the shower, as this will dry them out and exacerbate the problems with pain. Another thing that will help is after you’re done nursing, express a little milk onto your nipples and let it dry. Breast milk is naturally antibacterial and has healing properties.

If one nipple is more sore than the other, start your baby on the less sore side because at the beginning of a feeding she will suck more aggressively.

Pumping makes you feel like you’re not making enough milk. But at the beginning, most babies are only drinking about 2 oz per feeding. Nursing often will release more hormones that encourage milk production. Remember that it is supply and demand! If you truly don’t feel you’re making enough milk, be sure that you are drinking lots of water (some sources say 3 Liters, some say enough to keep your urine clear. I personally drink a gallon a day; it seems like a lot, but I use an old juice container and make sure i drink 2 of them each day. It’s a habit.) and eating oatmeal will also increase your supply.

You said that you have a pump. You might try pumping and feeding for a few days while you heal up. Most pumps have the ability to adjust the level of suction, which can make pumping take longer, but might be more gentle while you’re still providing your baby with Mommy Milk.

Please don’t give up, for the sake of your baby’s health! Pregnancy was difficult and painful, but you made it through! We Moms can do what ever we set our minds to. And it really truly DOES get better! if you need any advice or want questions answered, feel FREE to email me! I’ve been through a formula baby, a breastmilk bottle baby (pumped for over 4 months), and am currently nursing my almost 5 month old.

I’ve included some of my other “lactivist” answers here on yahoo in hopes that it will give you additional information. I’ve also included links to a couple of formula websites, just so you know that while formula is an option, even the makers of formula still acknowledge that breast feeding is best.

Good luck, Mommy!

I'm always exhausted and eat all dat long because I'm bored. (I live in Canada too cold for a walk now) How I can get out of this impasse? I hate being stuck at home all the time, but I look so terrible that I want LEAE NERR and I'm depressed and blame my husband. (Who says I always look wonderful by the way) Anyone else struggling? > Advice?

for clothes that fit you, go to a store Second-hand or something, but you will feel better if you have clothes that fit, merely a closet some "commodities" like a pair of pants shirts Nice and a few attend the course. Breastfeeding is a lot, but this is not a panacea for weight. You will need to start exercising, and possibly adjust your diet. Breastfeeding your toddler – Unlimited

Previously, mothers who choose to breastfeed their babies during the first month or six months. However, Today, a growing number of women elected to continue to make more than six months or more than they expected.

Recent years have shown that mothers more and more in most countries around the world have chosen to continue to breastfeed their young children from infancy to 3 to 4 years. This is becoming customary in most societies where young children because their own mothers, enjoy breastfeeding habits. When mothers and their children children, especially young children, is considered to be even advantage of this habit, do not try to stop him.

Before, it was believed that after six months of nursing the nursing mother lost her milk and natural nutrients should begin to wean your baby from breastfeeding. This is not true at all. Even more beyond six months, the milk of a mother always has high value protein, fats and other essential nutrients for babies or young children need.

Breast milk, unlike processed milk is in business and pharmacies immune contains natural compounds or elements that can protect infants and young children infections. These elements help the immune system and other vital organs of a child to further develop and ripen perfectly.

Studies in children in nursery children have shown that breastfeeding was shown to have significantly lower rates of serious infection or disease compared with those who have already stopped feeding of breast milk. In addition, a nursing mother to lose a small amount of work time if she chooses to continue breastfeeding turn returns to his regular work schedule.

So if you are a mother with a baby, to be a very smart if you continue to breastfeed her baby, even spent his six months of lactation. Although many people believe it is not necessary, breastfeeding remains the best and most natural growth and responsible development of your baby or toddler. There is no better substitute for breastfeeding health benefits can give you and your child. Only when you and your child agree to leave can begin to wean your child. Nobody else can not or will not prevent you from nursing your child as long as you want at a time and enjoy. The right time can tell whether and when you feel you have to stop breastfeeding. For now, suffice it to do – both for your love and your baby.

Breastfeeding – a Ladder for Good Health

Breast milk contains lactoferrin which helps in absorption of iron and protects the intestine from any harmful bacteria. The other component called lipases helps in digesting your fats which helps in baby’s growth and development. It not only serves the purpose of providing nutrients to your child but also in serving the purpose to quench to your baby’s thirst and fill-in your baby’s stomach.

The IQ of the child also increases by providing breast milk. It saves lot of time and money as you don’t have to sit up late night and mix the formula for your baby. The cost baby food is also cut which gives more time for the mother to be with her baby.

It creates a bond between the mother and child which binds them together. Nursing helps the mother to loose the extra pounds which she gained during her pregnancy. It burns out lot of calories which helps in bringing back the original size. If there are any chances of bleeding after child birth it lessens due to breast feeding. The risk of breast and ovarian cancer is minimal.

** I’m not embarassed to feed in public (or around my father-in-law and other male extended family members), just prefer to be discreet.
** Thanks for the reminders about the heat, but I plan on nursing well past the summer season.

I had a Bebe au Lait. It’s a great concept but a little cumbersome. The material rubbed against my baby’s face and it was hard to see her while nursing. Give it a shot though, you may love it. Since you’ve mastered breastfeeding already it will probably work for you.

Secrets for Breastfeeding in Public

If You’re Out And Your Baby Needs To Breastfeed, Where’s The Best Place To Go To Do It?

Once you’ve decided you are going to do what is best for your baby, no matter what, you might want to start thinking about a little “game plan” for when your baby wants to nurse in public. That way, there’s no need to panic when baby is hungry.

Think about where you are going. Or, take a quick look around once you arrive.

  • If it’s a restaurant, plan to ask for a corner table.

If possible, angle your body away from the other tables. I’ve even used my menu as a screen while latching baby on, and no one’s the wiser once I lay the menu down.

  • If it’s a large department store, do you know where the dressing rooms are?

Some shopping malls and larger stores may have a small lounge (connected to the bathroom) with a chair or a couch, so it would make more sense to take advantage of that, especially if you have older children with you.

  •  If it’s the zoo, plan on using your sling and taking advantage of the benches you’re sure to find around the park.

Recently, the kids and I headed to the zoo on a gorgeous spring day. I brought a stroller. But I also brought my sling, which I think of as a “best kept secret” when it comes to breastfeeding in public.

It was so easy to nurse there! Whenever Ella was ready, all I did was take her out of the stroller and put her in the sling. Most times, she was already cuddled in the sling and all I had to do was adjust her position before opening one side of my nursing shirt and latching her on.

Sometimes, there was a park bench nearby where I sat while the older kids investigated nearby animals. Usually, though, we just kept walking around while Ella nursed away in her own little private area (my sling).

Honestly, I’m continually amazed at the number of moms who come up to me when I’m out and want to know where to get a sling. I tell them you can easily order a baby sling off the internet. Just make sure you get the right size-you want to be able to cinch it tight enough to keep your baby secure against your own body.

  • Consider your car, which is another one of my favorite “private areas.”

If it’s not too warm or cold out, my van can be a quiet, familiar place for both my baby and I to settle down for a nursing.

Note. . .I’ve found that breastfeeding just before we get out and head in somewhere does the trick to fill up baby for awhile. Plus, if you put your baby in a sling before starting to nurse, he may end up taking a nap, making your outing even easier!

  • Wherever you are, beware of the common suggestion to head to the bathroom when your baby is hungry.

Would you want to eat your own lunch there? Adults and bottle-fed babies aren’t pointed toward the toilet and the same should hold true for your breastfed baby.

Also, if you have older children along, spending time feeding a baby in a toilet facility with a bored two-year old is not going to make for very pleasant memories.

Overall, the key is to plan ahead.

There are numerous little tricks for nursing discreetly in public. One is to pay attention to your baby’s hunger cues before he gets too frantic (and loud). Once you latch him on and he’s calmed down, most people won’t give you a second glance.

One final word on this. . .Many moms just find a place that is “private enough” to breastfeed rather than searching for absolute privacy. We have a nursing mothers’ room at our state fair, but if I’m halfway across the fair grounds when Ella needs to nurse, I will make do with any area that is “private enough.”

You may think there’s no way you can do this. But if your baby is obviously in need, you may find that your priorities will change over time.

You CAN do it!

Sore Nipples Breastfeeding Remedies

About to give up breastfeeding…help!?

My nipples are so sore I can barely stand it. My 3 week old has a good latch so that’s not the problem. I’ve been using Lansinoh and those hydro gel Soothies plus I’ve been using ice packs and Advil but nothing is working, Everytime she has to feed I feel like crying! Is there a chance the pain will end sometime soon? If it doesn’t I may have to resort to exclusively pumping because this pain is horrendous. Do you know of any other remedy for the pain?

IF you’ve had sore nipples from the start and they are getting worse i doubt your latch is right weather you think it or not. You need to see a lactation consultant. I’ve seen many regular nurses tell women that their latch is perfectly fine when it wasn’t and i was there to witness it. DO not use soap on your nipples, let them air dry with some breastmilk on them.

How to use white noise mp3 to deal with colic baby crying?

New parents find it a great challenge to control the crying of their babies. Parents do everything they can to make the baby happy, yet the baby chooses to cry. It is important for the parents to check the crying pattern of the baby. The parents have to check if the bay cries for three hours a day or more at a time. It has to be noted if the baby cries three times a week or more. Finally it is important to check if the baby has been crying more since the third week of life. If all the three conditions are noted, it is proved that the baby is colic. White noise mp3 including wind and rain mp3 are used in treating colic babies.

Colic babies always follow the Rule of Threes as mentioned above. A colic baby is happy and healthy but goes through bouts of inconsolable crying for three hours a day, three days a week, starting from the third week of life. It is very tiring to calm down a colic baby. Parents may try everything but a colic baby does not stop crying. This can also be emotionally draining for the helpless parents.

A baby can be colic if it experiences pain in the colon. The name “colic” is derived from “kolikos”, a Greek word meaning suffering in the colon. It is said that the baby experiences pain in the gut and consequently keeps crying. A change in the diet of then baby often does the trick. If the baby is still breastfeeding, altering the diet of the mother also helps in curing the inconsolable cry of the baby.

There is also a modern theory behind the crying of colic babies. Colic babies are said to be of high maintenance. Their delicate nervous system often gets stressed with the sounds and sights they are constantly subjected to. By the evening, the colic babies feel they have had enough and consequently begin crying. Such babies not only find it hard to stop crying, but also find it difficult to sleep. It takes a long time for them to fall asleep, and once they sleep they wake up very soon.

An effective way of treating colic babies is the use of white noise mp3. White noise consists of sounds that we hear constantly but are not too conscious about it. White noise mp3 do not attract out attention and make us stay focused our work. The white noise mp3 can consist of sounds of waterfalls, wind, rain etc. This monotonous hum has the power of making one feel sleepy. Parents can purchase white noise mp3 CDs or download them and play it to their babies. Babies are seen to stop crying fall asleep easily after they start hearing rain mp3 or other white noise mp3.

New born babies who are just out of the womb cannot handle the stimuli throughout the day. It gets stressed and burst in tears. Parents had no idea how to calm the baby till the concept of rain mp3 and other white noise mp3 were introduced. Now parents just need to dim the lights and play the rain mp3 or any other white noise mp3 and watch the baby fall asleep peacefully.

Breastfeeding Aprons

As a breastfeeding mom, do I need to worry about radiation in the OR (i work 2-3 dy/wk) irradiating my milk?

I wear a lead apron whenever x-ray is used, but should i wear the extra heavy ones designed for pregnant women?

The following is taken from a website which has questions answered by qualified medical personel who are experts in radiation and it’s effects. Here is what I found:

“QUESTION: Are there any risks to a newborn baby if the mother, who is a radiologist and does fluoroscopic procedures, is breast-feeding? In other words, is the mother’s milk irradiated by the procedure and passed on to the newborn?
ANSWER: Radiation-induced chemical changes require rather large doses and even then are rarely harmful to living organisms. Irradiated food, for example, is exposed to doses thousands of times greater than diagnostic doses, and there is no evidence of harm.

Conclusion: There is no reason for concern for lactating females exposed to occupational radiation in doses below the occupational dose limit of 50 mSv per year. S. Julian Gibbs, DDS, PhD”

http://hps.org/publicinformation/ate/q2951.html

When you are wearing a lead shield and using distance in your favor, your dose of radiation in the OR is very small:

“Your lead apron is one of the best defenses against radiation exposure. It will stop about 95% of the x rays. Another method of protection that can significantly reduce your exposure is to move farther away from the point where the x-ray beam is interacting with the patient. This doesn’t mean you have to move away from the table (but do so if you can), you can move up or down the length of the table and still increase your distance without getting too far from the patient. There is a general rule of thumb that says if you’re about a foot away from where the beam enters the patient, you receive about 1% of the dose the patient receives; if you’re three feet away, it decreases to about 0.1%. Decreasing time is another way to reduce exposure but I’m guessing you might not have much control over that. Let’s use an example. If a standard abdominal film is being taken (patient exposure is about 250 mR; a pelvis film is similar but extremity x rays are much less), and you’re standing one foot away and wearing a lead apron (one-foot distance reduces your dose by 99% and the lead apron reduces that by another 95%), your body under the apron would receive less than one mrem. Use the apron and distance to your advantage.”

Weaning Breastfeeding Pumping

Does anyone know how to wean an infant from breastfeeding to bottled formula?

My daughter is 9 months old and I’m ready to wean her. She drinks water from a bottle but refuses to even drink pumped breast milk in a bottle. I find it weird because she is exposed to a bottle and knows how to drink from it but does not want to drink her milk from it. Anyone have any tips? Thanks

Have you tried a cup?
Have you tried having someone else give the bottle? (Why should she take it from you? She KNOWS the breast is right there.)

If nothing works, you will need to decide for yourself if weaning now (and 9 months IS early — the AAP recommends a minimum of a year) is vital enough/important enough to you to force the issue and, basically, starve baby into submission. If it isn’t vital, then I would wait until your baby is more ready and willing.
