Am I measuring myself wrong?

I am, according to BMI, just on the border between overweight and normal. I gave birth 5 months ago so I’m okay with it for now. However, I wanted to attempt to make myself a skirt and bought a pattern. This pattern is putting me in the plus sizes at size 22 or 24. I’ve never needed to shop in plus sizes…I wear Medium shirts (thank you, breastfeeding) and size 8-10 pants. I’m not even on the chart. It’s not a Junior’s pattern. I’m measuring my waist at 36″ and my hips at 40″. I even looked online to make sure I was measuring myself right, and it looks like I am. Am I really in “plus” sizes? Am I doing something wrong? Or is 36″ waist really that huge?

Buy hip-fitting skirt and pants patterns by hip size, not waist — so you need a size 16 misses pattern (don’t worry, pattern sizes are always larger than ready to wear sizes). You’ll “buy” the extra 6″ needed at the waist by straightening the side seam from waist to hip and making the front darts (most likely) smaller, or possibly even eliminating them.

If your skirt pattern is for a skirt that’s designed to be loose at the hip (e.g., gored or dirndl), then you can just use the pattern sized for the waist and deal with the extra fabric in the hip.

Make sure your tape measure is over the appropriate undergarments and parallel to the floor, not tilted up or down, which folks do rather commonly when trying to measure yourself.

You may find you now have a tilted waistline — tie a string around your middle and settle it where you want your waistband to sit. If the CF to floor measurement is now shorter than CB to floor, you’ve got a tilted waistband, and your skirt will tend to swing towards the back at the sideseam. The correct alteration will be to keep the grainline straight at the hip and remove part of the top of the skirt pattern.

Plus size breastfeeding tops?

I wear a size 20-22 up top, 18-20 on bottom. I had a c section last week, and am having a heck of a time finding tops appropriate for breast feeding or pumping. I work in an office setting and need to find appropriate tops.
I’m on a pretty tight budget, and the cute tops at motherhood maternity cost more than I can afford.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I always liked Destination Maternity. They feature several different brands. A Pea in the Pod, however, does not carry large sizes. Motherhood does. Check the online sales and clearance items, they can be much more affordable.

Also, you might consider just getting a nursing camisole and wearing button-down shirts. That way you can just unbutton the shirt to feed or pump without bearing all.

Try looking for good deals on eBay, and often consignment shops will have gently used nursing wear mixed in with the maternity stuff.

What would be a beautiful, fashion forward dress to wear as a guest to a wedding?

I am going to a wedding next week for an old friend of the family. I have recently lost a bunch of weight and want to show up looking fantastic and very stylish since a lot of old friends will be there that have not seen me in a while. I am 31, 5′ 3″ and weigh about 130. I have a smaller chest (34 B) and larger hips (WHEN WILL PEAR SHAPED BE IN STYLE?!? LOL) I tend to be between a size 4 and size 6. I have great shoulders and bad thighs. I don’t mind wearing strapless but can’t do backless since I have to be able to wear a bra (after breastfeeding 3 kids the ladies are not where they used to be) I don’t mind showing the legs but must be able to bend down to my kids without showing too much I would love some links to dresses that are the current style but still appropriate for my age and I am trying to stay in the $100 or less range. You should look at the sale dresses at Banana Republic. You’ll find something flattering, kid friendly, that you can wear again and in your price range.

Pick something knee length (great for bending). Keep the dress simple in a nice color and buy some nice (cheap) bracelets and earrings.

Could I be pregnant while breastfeeding? I don’t have my period yet and I have many signs of pregnancy?

I am still nursing my 11 month old son and I still don’t have my period. For over a week I have been having many signs that make me feel like something is up! I have been feeling waves of nausea, lightheaded very often throughout the day and some fatigue. I also want nothing to do with my morning coffee … I took a pregnancy test at home at night, it came out negative. A blood test also came out negative. I am not sure what to to think. What do others think? Could I still be pregnant with these signs and 2 negative tests.

If you had a negative blood test then I don’t thinkn so. That shows up pretty early – I think if it was too early to say from a blood test you wouldn’t be having symptoms.

But you can get pregnant even if you’re breast feeding, the LAM only works for 6 months. Though some women find it hard to get pregnant while breast feeding others get pregnant quickly.

Try Kohl's or Target. No reason to buy "breast-feeding attrition." Normal clothes do same. Just look at the front or V-neck shirts tanks was that I used are those that have the pinch on them. And doll tops are very good, are free and can be removed fairly easily. Do not waste money on these clothes, especially if they are "poor."

Is it easy to get pregnant while breastfeeding?

I have a three month old daughter who I totally breastfeed and I take the mini pill also. I missed a pill, and I am scared about getting pregnant. I haven’t had a period in over a year. What are the chances of getting pregnant?

If you are breastfeeding exclusively and your child does not use a pacifier but instead breastfeeds every time they want to suck, then it’s not easy to fall pregnant at all, especially if you have not got your periods back. I’ve breastfed all my children, and apart from the child who ended up having breastmilk pumped for him at ten months old, it’s taken me two years at least for me to fall pregnant with the next child.

how long after giving birth is it possible to get postnatal depression?

I’ve had depression about five years ago, my baby is 8 months old and i’ve also just stopped breastfeeding. I’ve recently lost a lot of weight (not by trying to) my appetites not good and i feel i’ll a lot of the time. I feel stressed and down most of the time too and can’t seem to keep on top of things.
Whats the difference between just feeling down and post natal depression?

The difference is that your mood is affecting your everyday life and other people are noticing a difference in your behaviour. Being a mother is hard. I have a daughter who’s 3 and a daughter who’s one and i was diagnosed with post-natal depression when the youngest was six months. The name basically means the mother is having trouble dealing with her life now that she has children, so i don’t think there’s really a time line. If your feeling down, go and see your doctor, they’ll be able to help you figure it out.

I breastfed for about 3 months and I am a mother first and I am very grateful that he never had blocking problems. I'm still a student, so I have to pump if it dies of hunger or try to give the formula (which absolutely hates). Stretch marks are a normal part of puberty for most girls and boys. Stretch marks are generally associated with pregnancy, obesity, and fitness may develop during rapid muscle growth. It is a common condition that does not cause health problems, but may be of concern aesthetic level for some people. Stretch marks are the result of the rapid elongation of the skin associated with rapid growth (eg puberty) or increased weight (eg, pregnancy), and the use of anabolic steroids. Men and women can get stretch marks on several areas of your body including the abdomen, thighs, hips, breasts, arms or lower back.
Stretch marks can also occur from prolonged use of oral or topical corticosteroids. Stretching the skin can cause a stinging or itching sensation. 50-90 are presented in a pregnant women.

Stretch marks can appear anywhere on the body. Most common places are the abdomen (especially near the belly button), breasts, arms, underarms, thighs (inner and outer), hips and buttocks. Any other mommy need someone to talk to also?

I had a baby 6 months ago. Husbands, breast feeding, and babies are exhausting! And now is not the time to diet. Eat healthy well balanced meals, have 2 snacks a day, and drink tons of water. Every time you feed the baby, you should have a glass of water. You could be dehydrated or just plain tired! Are you still taking your prenatal vitamins. My doctor had me continue taking them the entire time that I breast fed Noah.
Cut out fast food, fried food, and junk food. Increase you intake of bananas, grapes, and strawberries. Eat one or two salads w/ your lunch and dinner. But, don’t but back on your calories. The weight will eventually come off. It took me 14-15 months to get back to “almost normal”! As for your clothes being too tight, you may need to go buy a few transitional pieces. Pick up a few pair of capri’s (black, tan, and denim) and buy a few colorful spring tops. You’ll boost your mood, you’ll look nice, and everyone will be happy. Good luck!

I totally agree with the first answer. Let the baby finish one breast completely before offering the second. This way, he’s getting the higher-fat milk at the end of the feeding.

When mine was an infant, I didn’t worry about evenly stimulating both breasts — the baby will do that on his own, according to his needs.

I loved how I lost weight while breastfeeding my little boy. I've never felt better! But for me, I make everything as soon as I stop. My eating habbits have not changed at all, that as usual the same way. For any other encountered this?

Be very careful when the baby starts to wean. Nursing uses up a lot of calories, so once you fully weaned, have to eat less or exercise more to ensure that you do not gain weight. I lost a little weight during the first year after each my children were born, but he won slower during the 2nd year (as my children breastfed less) because I was not as good my eating habits.
