Breastfeeding When Sick

Did you get sick more often while breastfeeding?

When I was nursing my girls, I caught every cold and flu that came along. I did not get sick every month when pregnant or when I am not pregnant or nursing.
Someone is reporting all my questions; I expect this one to be reported too.

I’m currently exclusively breastfeeding my almost 4mth old son. I haven’t gotten sick yet, but I’m just waiting on cold and flu season then we will see. I did get a flu shot though but I think it was for last years strain. Do you take vitamins and eat enough healthy foods? Do you get enough rest (its kinda hard with baby but possible)? Breastfeeding can run your body down easily if you don’t be careful. With my first son I got sick like every 2 weeks when I was pregnant.

Hydrogel Pads Breastfeeding

How to feed baby with sore and cracked nipples?

My nipples are very raw and it looks like little sores on the ducts. I am using hydrogel pads to promote healing. I am not sure whether to solely express during the healing process? Both breastfeeding and expressing hurt but I would think its more safer to express so I can see whether I draw any blood?

I have 3 daughters and breast feed them all! Its no easy task at first because of the EXCRUCIATING PAIN that. Your nipples are going through! My doctor gave me some cooling gel pads called soothies and some lanolin oil which helped when the baby wasn’t feeding. As far as when they are lached on the only thing you really can do is make sure they have a proper lach from the begining it makes it less painful! After a few weeks you nipples will toughen up and they shouldn’t have any pain at all! Hope this helps… Hang in there and DON’T give up it gets loads easier I promise… Enjoy your precious bundle!

Breastfeeding Clothes Uk

Any tips of feeding clothes?

I’m struggling to find breastfeeding tops and wondered if anyone could suggest places (i live in the uk). My baby doesn’t like those tops with a double layer and a hole to feed through – she has problems attaching. What I’d really like is button down tops so I can get the whole breast out as that is the easier way to feed her but the only tops I can find like that are shirts. Any suggestions? Thanks

you could just wear a regular t shirt and use this to cover your modesty

http://www.mothercare.com/gp/product/B00195JTZM/sr=1-13/qid=1219825522/ref=sr_1_13/202-1233383-6899835?ie=UTF8&m=A2LBKNDJ2KZUGQ&n=44554031&mcb=core

i had a look, i dont think you will be able to just buy it from the shop, you’d have to order them online, just do a yahoo search on ‘breastfeeding clothes’ and limit the results to pages from the UK.

Pregnancy Signs Breastfeeding

pregnancy signs breastfeeding

Some around 70% of the women who give birth to a newborn experience the “baby blues.” Many of them learn to overcome the symptoms of postpartum depression, but for those who are not so lucky it can have a menacing impact on the family life.

If you understand how to identify it you can learn how to control the issue. If you have the blues it will only be temporary. If you have postpartum depression it could last for months at a time.

Whether you feel guilty, worthless, have anxiety about hurting the baby, do not care about yourself anymore or even experience appetite changes, they are all signs of postpartum depression. Keep in mind these are only some of the many symptoms out there.

You may not find pleasure in anything you do, have unhealthy sleeping patterns, or even think about suicide.

You will find that this begins as early as the day after you give birth to your child. Over the next several months you could see it become increasingly worse. It is a serious condition so do not take it lightly, and be prepared for it to come about unexpectedly if you did not experience it in the beginning.

One of the biggest topics today that revolves around postpartum depression is breastfeeding. If you are a mother suffering from postpartum anxiety, it could be difficult to breastfeed your baby. You could have lower supplies of milk or be taking a medication that is not appropriate while nursing your child.

When this comes about there are several mothers who skip postpartum depression treatment because of the medication. It is important to remember all the dangers that that can develop if this goes untreated. Both for you and the child.

There is a certain bonding that takes place when a mother breast feeds her baby. So it is possible for the mother to breastfeed even though she is on medication. Looking for a treatment is important and you will find various options that can help preserve the breastfeeding of your newborn.

Always remember you do not want to have a conflict between your babys’ needs and your own.

It is true that breastfeeding preserves life and at the same time nurtures your child.

We understand that some mothers find it difficult to breastfeed. However, it is also understandable that if a mother is willing to work on controlling, alleviating, and preventing postpartum depression, there are treatments that are perfect for each individuals’ needs.

This can include; medication, psychotherapy, or even support groups which have been known to be extremely successful.

Studies have found that breastfeeding might have a positive influence on postpartum depression on both an emotional and hormonal level.

It has to do with oxytocin, which is a hormone released during breastfeeding. It is said this is a huge help for women dealing with the symptoms of postpartum depression.

There are even testimonials out there from women who say that when they breastfeed their child, it has helped fight postpartum depression anxiety.

Best of all this allows you to stay connected with our child and bond to them as well. When the mother has a feeling of satisfaction that her baby needs here, it play a major role in overcoming this condition.

Emma has written about some very practical suggestions on postpartum depression, which you can learn about at http://www.PostpartumDepressionTreatment.org. Also, discover other treatment for postpartum depression options that has helped many mothers.

Exclusively breastfed for 12 years, months son is VERY chubby. Etc?

My chest 12-month-old son alone (eating solids sometimes but not always involved) is very large. It weighs almost 40 pounds. and clothing in three years. Its size is so chubby that can actually lead extensible and sweatpants … Time is a meatball! He went to all regular reviews and his latest (8 months) the doctor who was just a big kid. Very away from the charts in both the weight and length. But lately everyone has been stressing me. They think it has something to do with it my breastfeeding on demand and I believe that now must watch their diet weaned. I have two questions actually. My questions are … Is it possible to overfeed your baby breast milk? and there are benefits for care Nursing beyond the first anniversary? Thanks.

I think you should start to wean and start to promote stronger and try it because it be more active …. lead him to play dates and park and things ….. it might just be chubby or may be in their genes, but I have a toddler and her weight 30 lbs …. I think it's great to be so bad for him and in the long run it can really hurt …… Your doctor should be more concerned … I know mine is (my daughter is small for her age) is always followed ….. doctors can pass or check in at a support group for older babies, but actually start to look at his plan, as can be worse, grew up and is bad for your health and once you enter school, and joked that he did not want.

How will lose her baby weight?

I won 80 pounds with my son and lost 45 in the first 7 weeks. I even baby's tummy and fat at 10 weeks and found it hard to look decent in my clothes. I'm back at work part time, but very embarrassed by my limp body and unkempt clothing. Can not afford to go out and buy a new wardrobe. My old clothes are too small, maternity clothes are too big. Any suggestions on how to minimize stomach faster? I'm breastfeeding, so be sure to eat enough, I'm so self-conscious and uncomfortable in my body now.

[Women following post-partum diet, vigorous exercise, or skipping meals can quickly fall books, but also release higher levels of toxins in the breast milk. However, breast milk remains the healthiest food for your baby, so do not let that discourage breastfeeding. Work in a progressive loss weight, eating when hungry, and be sure to drink plenty of fluids. This is the best way to lose weight easily and safely.]

HELP my 5 month old baby refuses a bottle, just spoon feeding! I only breast milk.?

Recently, my baby Do not take a bottle of 4.2 ounces per day at most …. she is almost 20 pounds in 5 months and 12 months on clothes because she is so tall, but she went from one type of bottle (Could only take a pacifier orthopidic the first day) for 5 months and have tried everything … switching formula … try differnt bottles and even a peak of some cups …… Always try to give a visceral and / or oatmeal so you can mix with the formula ….. I do not know what to do?! You need liquid / formula nutriets and I'm at a loss. She is not dehydrated ….. wet diapers are contstant ….. is just reject the bottle …. I've never available to them from the beginning. So she knows no differnt …… Does anyone have any advice? The only thing I found when looking for breastfeeding mothers with none of this and / or person in my situation. Any advice would be helpful, I am a single mother who works and its really stressful. THANKS TO ALL IN ADVANCE

When she takes the bottle is a feeling Panic? Or, finally, when she wants and not just interested in the past? She has enough liquid or wet diapers she ~ and suffering from constipation. She has to eat his cereal, or would be in a bad mood and hunger. All infant cereals are fortified with iron and vitamin also, like the formula. Babies have an incredible ability to take only what you need and then turn the rest And at 6 months, slows growth, compared with the first months of life. Therefore we do not need as many calories on a daily basis. It lets you know when you go to a growth spurt "request" for more, when the cup is empty or suck the formula down and sulk – it all happens too quickly to respond. her that I would not choose this time he was offered Karo in his bottle all the sugar and empty calories. It can even cause diarrhea. (It's great for occasional constipation iron in the formula). Keep ~ cup liquid water when it is in the dining room has its cereal. We also recommend you call the doc to do things for him too ~ this is what it is here! And if he is good with the claim that no harm -. Just remember that a baby is in pain or ill will rather than content. If she is hungry baby happy and all systems are operating correctly, it does well!

Breastfeeding Stool

breastfeeding stool
My baby week had not stool for two days. What I can do? I am your breast.?

I breastfed and blended formula every 3 hours. She seems happy with it. And she wet the bed between meals.

How many wet diapers does your baby one day? How How often are you nursing? Do you hear the baby swallowing? The baby seems satisfied after eating? Breast milk is produced on? Anyway, I would communicate with the PED and lifelong learning. There may be problems of supply and the baby is not getting enough milk. Good luck!

Breastfeeding Supplies List

What all should I pack in my diaper bag & my ‘hospital’ bag?

I’m almost 36 weeks, and I’m still at a loss for what all I should pack to take to the hospital! I’ve read a million lists, but it always seems to be a hundred things that never really seem to apply to me? Like clothes for my husband and towels? — My hubby will go home and shower and come back while my mom and dad stay with me and I know our hospital will supply towels and such for me when I feel like showering. Everything on these dang lists seem to be the same, so can anyone possibly give me some advice on what to bring for our little girl once she arrives? If I’m planning on breastfeeding is there anything in particular that I should bring or will the hospital pretty much take care of that stuff? Sorry! Hope I don’t sound ignorant, but this is my first baby and the closer I get to my due date the more strung out and absentminded I seem to get! Thanks everyone! God Bless!!

get a comfortable nursing bra or a nursing tank (if you don’t want to spend too much just get one at target or walmart … you don’t really know what size your breasts will be – my breasts barely grew during my pregnancy so with my first i bought a bunch of c-cup nursing bras … big mistake! i was a dd-cup!)

get some nursing pads, too – i used the lansinoh disposable ones with my first so that’s what i bought for this baby, too. i would also get some pure lanolin cream for your nipples in case they get sore … i don’t remember whether or not the hospital gave that to me – but they didn’t give me anything else for nursing.

if you get wipes for baby, make sure you get some without alcohol … the hospital gave me thick paper towel-like sheets and a bottle that i could put warm water in to clean up my son instead of wipes … they provided the diapers.

you should buy and wash a preemie and a newborn outfit for the baby to wear home … something comfortable and easy, there’s plenty of time for “cute outfits” later … just make sure she’s warm and comfortable. (my son wore preemies for a long time before newborn clothes would even fit … every baby is different, though)

i’ve been writing a lot so i can’t think right now *^_^* i will come back if i remember anything else

don’t stress out – it sounds like if you forget anything you will have someone around to get you what you need *^_^*

congratulations! you’re almost there! *^_^*

Miscarriage Breastfeeding

Does anyone have experience with breastfeeding during pregnancy?

I have 7 months and I just found out I am pregnant again. "I can give chest? I'm allergic to prenatal vitamins, and I fear that if I keep my child from nursing, the baby did not get what you need. Also, I noticed bad cramps after breastfeeding, breastfeeding during pregnancy is possible that this causes strong contractions that lead to the work of a miscarriage or premature?

In is actually quite common, although many women find that their breasts are very painful after 5 months of gestation. There is absolutely no evidence that breast mother during pregnancy can cause contractions is sufficient to cause a miscarriage or premature labor. The baby is nursing frequently closes around 6 months to 7, because the flavor changes in milk but often return to nursing again when the baby is born. There is a yahoo group Breastfeeders widespread and many have experience Nursing care in pregnancy. You can call for advice (do not know how it is now active.) Finally, the regular vitamins should be very good if otherwise a good diet, but the extra folic acid. Try the Brewer Diet (calories should be good, as are breast-feeding). Mr. Brewer died last few years, but others are keeping the site updated.

Secrets for Breastfeeding in Public

If You’re Out And Your Baby Needs To Breastfeed, Where’s The Best Place To Go To Do It?

Once you’ve decided you are going to do what is best for your baby, no matter what, you might want to start thinking about a little “game plan” for when your baby wants to nurse in public. That way, there’s no need to panic when baby is hungry.

Think about where you are going. Or, take a quick look around once you arrive.

  • If it’s a restaurant, plan to ask for a corner table.

If possible, angle your body away from the other tables. I’ve even used my menu as a screen while latching baby on, and no one’s the wiser once I lay the menu down.

  • If it’s a large department store, do you know where the dressing rooms are?

Some shopping malls and larger stores may have a small lounge (connected to the bathroom) with a chair or a couch, so it would make more sense to take advantage of that, especially if you have older children with you.

  •  If it’s the zoo, plan on using your sling and taking advantage of the benches you’re sure to find around the park.

Recently, the kids and I headed to the zoo on a gorgeous spring day. I brought a stroller. But I also brought my sling, which I think of as a “best kept secret” when it comes to breastfeeding in public.

It was so easy to nurse there! Whenever Ella was ready, all I did was take her out of the stroller and put her in the sling. Most times, she was already cuddled in the sling and all I had to do was adjust her position before opening one side of my nursing shirt and latching her on.

Sometimes, there was a park bench nearby where I sat while the older kids investigated nearby animals. Usually, though, we just kept walking around while Ella nursed away in her own little private area (my sling).

Honestly, I’m continually amazed at the number of moms who come up to me when I’m out and want to know where to get a sling. I tell them you can easily order a baby sling off the internet. Just make sure you get the right size-you want to be able to cinch it tight enough to keep your baby secure against your own body.

  • Consider your car, which is another one of my favorite “private areas.”

If it’s not too warm or cold out, my van can be a quiet, familiar place for both my baby and I to settle down for a nursing.

Note. . .I’ve found that breastfeeding just before we get out and head in somewhere does the trick to fill up baby for awhile. Plus, if you put your baby in a sling before starting to nurse, he may end up taking a nap, making your outing even easier!

  • Wherever you are, beware of the common suggestion to head to the bathroom when your baby is hungry.

Would you want to eat your own lunch there? Adults and bottle-fed babies aren’t pointed toward the toilet and the same should hold true for your breastfed baby.

Also, if you have older children along, spending time feeding a baby in a toilet facility with a bored two-year old is not going to make for very pleasant memories.

Overall, the key is to plan ahead.

There are numerous little tricks for nursing discreetly in public. One is to pay attention to your baby’s hunger cues before he gets too frantic (and loud). Once you latch him on and he’s calmed down, most people won’t give you a second glance.

One final word on this. . .Many moms just find a place that is “private enough” to breastfeed rather than searching for absolute privacy. We have a nursing mothers’ room at our state fair, but if I’m halfway across the fair grounds when Ella needs to nurse, I will make do with any area that is “private enough.”

You may think there’s no way you can do this. But if your baby is obviously in need, you may find that your priorities will change over time.

You CAN do it!

Sports Bra Breastfeeding

what do you wear in labour, i dont want to wear anything the hospital gives me obviously i will keep my?

bra on (sports bra) for support (i am not breastfeeding) wot else a nighty????
I live in the uk
Ok this isnt a vainty issue i just do not like the gowns they give out in the uk and you can wear your own night shirt as my sister did with both of hers

Most hospitals now ask you to bring in your own gown when in labour, very few now give out gowns unless you were brought in without having packed your hospital bag. Wear WHATEVER is comfortable for you, if i’s an old tshirt or a nightdress then wear that, if you want to wear your sports bra no one is going to tell you you can’t. I would pack at least 2 different nighties though. I only packed one and throw up all down the front of mine, my poor mum had to go home to get me a clean one whilst i sat some what naked in a room full of strangers.

What makes public breastfeeding uncomfortable?

In response to another question about why nursing moms refuse to pump and bring bottles when going out – I’m wondering what it is about breastfeeding that makes some people so uncomfortable. I get that public nudity isn’t proper, but I’ve never seen a woman nursing with her entire top off or her breast fully exposed. I don’t understand the resistance to it. Looking for insight, please.

someone kiss Ethel for me!!

That was the perfect answer.

now, the question is… how can we implant that line of thought into the brains of all “tween” girls right now so that when it’s their turn, formula will only be used by fathers when the mother has died, or when a woman has had a double mastectomy, has to undergo chemotherapy, or is HIV positive (or any other similar grave medical condition).

I have a friend who honestly feels that “breastfeeding is not your choice, but your baby’s birth right. Formula should be available by prescription ONLY.” – that’s directly from her myspace page…. I’m not quite that militant, but I do agree with her thinking!

Silicone Breast Implants: The Safety of Silicone

A New Day in silicone, a preferred option in breast aesthetic surgery.

Silicones are a family of chemical compounds. They are made from silicon, a naturally occurring element found in sand, quartz and rock. Next to oxygen, silicon is the most common element in the earth’s crust and becomes silicone when it is combined with oxygen, carbon and hydrogen. Depending on the arrangement of the molecules, silicones can be manufactured in a variety of forms including oils, gels and solids.

Silicones have been part of the consumer industry for over 50 years. Because they can be manufactured in various ways, silicones appear in a wide variety of products that most of us use everyday. Hairsprays, suntan lotions and moisturizing creams are just some of the consumer products that contain one form of silicone called dimethicone.

Medical devices utilizing silicone include artificial joints, catheters, drainage systems, facial implants, tissue expanders and breast implants. Silicone products have been shown to be biocompatible, reliable, flexible and easy to sterilize, making them an ideal choice for both implantable and non-implantable medical devices.

What makes today’s silicone a safe option?

In 1992, the FDA called for a voluntary moratorium (delay) on the use of silicone gel-filled breast implants until new safety information could be thoroughly reviewed by the FDA’s advisory panel. That same year, the FDA lifted this moratorium and announced its decision to allow access to silicone breast implants for reconstruction patients under controlled clinical studies, called Adjunct Studies. In 1999, the FDA allowed the use of silicone gel-filled implants in Allergan’s Core Clinical Study to assess the safety and effectiveness of these devices.

While these studies are collecting information specific to INAMEDs Silicone-Filled Breast Implants, the National Institute of Health’s Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a landmark 400-page report entitled “Safety of Silicone Breast Implants.” This 1999 report on the safety ofsilicone concluded “There is insufficient evidence to support an association of silicone breast implants with defined connective tissue disease.” The IOM also stated “There is no convincing evidence for atypical connective tissue disease or rheumatic disease or a novel constellation of signs and symptoms in women with silicone breast implants.”??

The unique qualities of today’s silicone gel-filled breast implants help make it the filler of choice for patients in countries where both saline-filled and silicone gel-filled breast implants are widely available.

With the recent approval of silicone filled breast implants for breast augmentation and breast reconstruction, physicians and patients can be assured of the safety of silicone. This confirmation is based on extensive preclinical testing, four years of data on 715 women from Allergan’s Core Clinical Study and a European study that evaluated implant rupture prevalence rates beyond 10 years. In addition, countless published, peer-reviewed studies and research support the safety of silicone gel-filled breast implants.

A study by the US Government looks at silicone implants and confirms findings.
In 1997, the Department of Health and Human Services began one of the most extensive research studies in medical history by appointing the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science (IOM) to examine potential complications during or after surgery.

The IOM consisted of a 13-member volunteer committee, including six women. The committee was composed of members of the medical, scientific and educational communities with experience in radiology, women’s health, neurology, oncology, silicone chemistry, rheumatology, immunology, epidemiology, internal medicine and plastic surgery. No IOM members had on-going relationships or conflicts of interest related to any implant lawsuits.

The result: After reviewing years of evidence and research concerning these implants, the IOM found that “Evidence suggests diseases or conditions such as connective tissue diseases, cancer, neurological diseases or other systemic complaints or conditions are no more common in women with breast implants than in women without implants.”

Furthermore, a review of research and medical studies shows:
Extensive studies, including a report by the Institute of Medicine, conclude that breast cancer is no more common in women with implants than in those without implants

The American Academy of Pediatrics concluded in September 2001 “The Committee on Drugs does not feel that the evidence currently justifies classifying silicone implants as a contraindication to breastfeeding.”

Epidemiological investigations have not found any increased risk of adverse health outcomes in children born to women with breast implants
Silicone breast implants are arguably the most studied medical devices and decades of research have evaluated their safety and effectiveness.

The Allergan Core Clinical Study

Allergan’s Core Clinical Study is an ongoing 10-year study of 940 women who had breast augmentation, reconstruction or revision of a previous surgery between 1999 and 2000. Safety and effectiveness is evaluated through patient follow-up at zero to four weeks, six months, 12 months, 24 months, and annually through 10 years. Safety is assessed by complications, such as implant rupture, capsular contracture and re-operation. Benefit (effectiveness) is assessed by patient satisfaction and measures of body image/esteem and self-esteem.

The result: The FDA has evaluated Allergan’s Core Clinical Study data at four years and determined that INAMEDs Silicone-Filled Breast Implants are safe and effective for use in breast augmentation and breast reconstruction.

The Allergan Adjunct Clinical Study

The Allergan Adjunct Clinical Study enrollment was limited to reconstruction and revision surgery patients who met certain inclusion criteria. Between the years of 1998 and 2006, when enrollment in this study was terminated, over 80,000 silicone filled implants were implanted in more than 50,000 women. Safety data is collected at one, three and five years and is used as supplemental data to support the safety of INAMEDs Silicone-Filled Breast Implants.

Studies show silicone gel-filled breast implants are safe, but that doesn’t make them right for everybody. Silicone gel-filled breast implants are not lifetime devices. It is possible at some point in your lifetime that the implant(s) would need to be removed or replaced. To ensure that you achieve your optimal results safely, patients should be aware that you should not have breast implant surgery if you:

1. Have existing malignant or pre-malignant cancer of the breast and have not been successfully treated

2. Have an active infection anywhere in the body

3. Are currently pregnant or nursing

You should also know that silicone gel breast implants have not been clinically tested in women with:

1. Autoimmune diseases like lupus or scleroderma

2. Conditions that could interfere with wound healing and blood clotting

3. A weakened immune system (such as women receiving immunosuppressive therapy)

4. Reduced blood supply to the breast tissue

5. Radiation to the breast following implantation

6. Clinical diagnosis of depression or other mental health disorders, including body dysmorphic disorder and eating disorders. Please discuss any history of mental health disorders prior to surgery
