I'm on a diet without milk during lactation of my month-old girl in February. I tried soy milk and had problems with that too, so I spent with rice milk, which seems to be very well. I wonder if it is necessary to add more to my diet to compensate for the loss of nutrients does not drink cow's milk (no cheese, etc)? Or is breastfeeding will give all the necessary nutrients?
Talk your doctor about this. While mutlivitamin and you take a calcium supplement should be good. But, obviously, will not eat or drink anything worrying. Vegans and vegetarians do fine during breastfeeding, go to some of their websites to see what they recommend eating or drinking to make sure that your baby is healthy. While your baby continues grow and prosper, it should go. Just talk to your pediatrician and if you are concerned.

What is a good attention getter for a persuasive speech about breastfeeding in public?
I’m doing two persuasive speeches on this topic, and the one I’m working on right now argues FOR a mother’s right to breastfeed in public and the next one will argue AGAINST. So please don’t waste your time if you’re just going to be turn this into a debate about breastfeeding in public. I just need a quote, fact, story, ANYTHING to help me get started! Thanks in advance!
I just want to say thanks for all the great answers so far! You’ve all been a huge help and you really got my ideas flowing! THANKS!
A special thanks to MelG- that website you gave me was awesome and one of the articles on there turned out to be a story from my local paper here in Lawrence (ljworld.com)! Thats really helpful when establishing relevancy of this topic because it has been an issue in our own community.
This is a great attention-getting quote to open with:
“If a multinational company developed a product that was a nutritionally balanced and delicious food, a wonder drug that both prevented and treated disease, cost almost nothing to produce and could be delivered in quantities controlled by the consumers’ needs, the very announcement of their find would send their shares rocketing to the top of the stock market. The scientists who developed the product would win prizes and the wealth and influence of everyone involved would increase dramatically. Women have been producing such a miraculous substance, breastmilk, since the beginning of human existence…”

My 4 week old has had bloody stools 3 times in the last 3 weeks.?
I was just told one day ago to stop breastfeeding and give him a special formula. I have 3 older children who never had any allergy problems. I read somewhere that I should continue to breastfeed until 3 weeks have past (when the protein is totally out of my system?) I wish to continue to breastfeed but that would be going against my doctors orders. Help!
My son is allergic to cow milk protein. I breastfeed him. We also had to deal with a lot of painful colic and then bloody stools before we figured it out. I cut all dairy out of my diet.. not just milk and yogurt. I cut ALL of it.. trace amounts. I read every label before I put something in my mouth and know all the names for everything that could be listed that would be derived from milk. I don’t eat at places that use butter on the grills. I read bread labels and take calcium supplements … my son is 10 months now and I’ve been doing this since he was 2 months. I didn’t supplement with formula.. so the reaction he had was 100% from the trace amounts in my breastmilk. That means that his allergy is pretty sensitive so I wanted to be very careful. It takes about 2 weeks to get the protein out of your system. Most pediatricians I found aren’t very knowledgeable on breastfeeding with an allergy and very quick to just try to throw them on a special formula. I’ve done most of my research on my own and spoke with nutritionists and lactation consultants. You would be surprised everything that has dairy. Frozen turkey burgers, breads, potato chips, etc.. it’s a lot of checking labels and cooking from scratch.. or semi-scratch! If you would like to chat about it more please feel free to contact me!!! I’ve been doing this for 8 months and I plan on nursing and keeping dairy out of my diet until he is 15 months.. I plan on nursing past that but the one pediatrician that I found that was knowledgeable said it was a good idea to try to introduce cow milk one tablespoon at a time when they turn 15 months. They usually say 12-15 but since his was sensitive enough to just be picked up from my breastmilk 15 is best. One tablespoon the first day, 2 the second.. and so on.. & see how it goes. I’m considering doing that with goat milk at 15 months though possibly and cow milk at 2 years.
Hope this helped!!!
EDIT: Incase you decide to go the route I did I have some tips!!!
#1 – Rice Dream rice milk.. plain & vanilla. It’s watery but you get used to it. Make sure the kind you buy is vitamin fortified so it helps with calcium.
#2- Coconut Milk yogurt and ice cream.. REALLY good stuff! Better than dairy even. http://www.turtlemountain.com/products/coconut_yogurt.html
#3- Don’t try vegan cream cheese!!! It’s NASTY. & vegan cheese often has cow milk protein but no cow milk. It’s weird.. avoid it.
#4- Vegetable oil spread or specialty items like duck fat are good for cooking substitutions for butter. Not the most healthy always but they work!
Soy often is not a good substitute. Babies who are sensitive to cow milk are at a higher risk to develop a sensitivity to soy… and really soy in high quantities might not be the best thing… I avoided it altogether until he was 6 months. I only drink soy if I go to Starbucks and want a drink since then. Again, hope this helps!
Edit#2: When I first wrote this I said I have been doing it since 8 months.. but what I meant to say was that I have been doing it 8 months since he was 2 months old.

What do you think of this article mothers, the language of breastfeeding?
http://www.bobrow.net/kimberly/birth/BFLanguage.html comparisons Health use a biological, not cultural, norm, if it is harmful or helpful. Smokers have higher rates of disease, increased folic acid before birth can reduce fetal abnormalities. Because breastfeeding is the biological norm, breastfed babies are "unhealthy" babies artificially fed are sick more often and more seriously. infants fed breast milk do not "feel better" artificial feeding results in an abnormal and unpleasant odor that reflects the problems in the intestines of infants. We can not wait to create a breastfeeding culture if we do not insist on a breastfeeding model of health in our language and literature.

anyone had got pregnant taking the mini pill (breastfeeding mothers)?
Good morning ladies! I have been taking the mini pill for a two months now, but for some reason I keep taking them like 5 or 7 minutes late, I work, have a 4 month year old son, and a husband, so mother’s we know how that is, but the last three times my husband and I had sex, he had ejaculated in me, and I am worried because I saw something on the internet stating that I could have an increase of ectopic pregnancy while taking this pill. I been taking the pill like 5 minutes late, I just hope to God that this does not happen to me, I would like to have another child but not like this. Have this happened to someone or someone you know, thank you everyone!!
i was on the mini pill directly after giving birth to my 12 year old however when he was 8 months old i found out i was pregnant and i was 5 months pregnant now the only reason i went to the doctor was because of tummy pains i didnt realize i was pregnant because i was taking the mini pill and still having my cycle regular it was crazy

Is it common practice to breast feed a 14 month old? I thought breastfeeding lost it’s benefits at 1 years old?
Please don’t take offense. I’m just wondering. It’s just a little strange to see someone breastfeeding a toddler.
Hey there, No offense taken my first child stopped at 14.5 months old, and the second went on until 18 months.
Babies are on formula or Breast milk until they are one year of age, then their bodies have usually developed enough to accept cow’s milk, but most children like adults have a hard time switching over, and actually the AMA recommends moms try to breastfeed for a least the first year, most don’t make it that long it is hard and some have a hard time with the milk supply or they just have had enough it is demanding. Some preemie babies need the momma milk a little longer because of development milestones, which breast milk can help them to achieve it is proven. In America and most modern countries it is very weird or abnormal to see a toddler 2 or older walk up to mom and take a little milk, generally they do it for nurturing reasons, not nutritional. Sometimes weening a child can be difficult.
In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in breastfeeding. Yet first-time mothers often lack the support and the knowledge they need. Many of the available books fail to address the practical challenges that confront many women (especially women who work outside the home) when they choose to breastfeed. For these women, The Breastfeeding Book is a godsend — with comprehensive, reas…

Best advice for breastfeeding and formula combined?
I am a mother first, I want to breastfeeding associated with the advice formula? The reason: the job!
I begin to exclusive breastfeeding. Must provide its well-established before you start pumping or supply of bottles of formula. About 2-3 weeks before having to return to work, or 4-6 weeks (if later) to begin pumping a supply of breast milk, and bring a bottle milk once a day. The ideal would be to provide breast milk in bottles. If you can not pump enough during the workday (or unable to pump at all) to enter the formula in a bottle about a week or two before returning to work. You want to be sure the baby does not have a bad reaction, and give time to adjust taste. (But do not want to enter too soon, because the baby can have anything other than breast milk, the better.) At this point, depending on your personal situation start working toward what nursing / pumping / bottle of business for the formula to be needed when you return to work.

Congratulations! You’ve got a baby on the way! Once your baby has arrived, one of the most important parts of your new life together will be getting a good night’s sleep – you in your bed, the baby in a safe and comfortable crib. At first, you may want your newborn to sleep in a bassinet by your bed, making it a little easier for breastfeeding moms, but have a crib ready by the time your baby can roll over.
Your baby will spend more time in the crib than anywhere else, so safety is of utmost importance. What makes a crib safe?
* The bars or slats of the crib railing should be no more than 2-3/8″ apart, close enough together to prevent your baby’s head from slipping through or getting stuck. That crib in the attic may be a beautiful antique, but it probably does not meet this safety standard. Secondhand older cribs may also have splinters or lead paint as well as slats that are too far apart.
* Cribs with cutout designs along the rail may look pretty, but your baby’s arm or neck could get stuck in them.
* The crib must be sturdy. Your child will sleep in a crib until it’s time to move into a regular bed between the ages of 2 and 3. When shopping for the crib, give it a good shake to see if it wobbles or rattles.
* Construction materials should be stained or painted hardwoods like maple, ash, beech or oak. The use of inferior woods can potentially weaken or warp the slats. Some metal cribs are also very sturdy and secure. All finish materials must be lead free and non-toxic.
* For safety, the dropsides must be at least 9″ above the mattress support when lowered. When the side is raised, the top must be at least 26″ above the support at its lowest position. You should have no trouble quietly raising and lowering the side rail easily with one hand, since chances are you’ll have a sleeping baby in your arms.
* Make things a little easier on your back by choosing a crib with an adjustable height mattress. A newborn can rest higher in the crib, while a baby who can sit up needs a lower mattress so he can’t climb out. You can change the height of most mattresses by simply raising or lowering the mattress support.
* Check the hardware on the crib for sharp edges or points or anything else that could hurt your baby.
* The mattress should fit snugly into the crib. If you can fit two fingers between the side of the mattress and the crib, it is too small. Keep an eye on foam mattresses; over time, they may break down at the edges and leave gaps. Check the mattress support to make sure there are safety clips that lock the hangers into their notches.
* Use nonflammable and hypoallergenic bumper padding attached to the inside railings of the crib to cushion all four sides and prevent your baby from sticking an arm or leg through the railings. Securely fasten the bumper pads to the sides of the crib in at least six places. Be sure to remove bumper pads when your baby becomes more active.
* Follow assembly instructions carefully. Periodically tighten all nuts, bolts, and screws and check teething rails for cracks. Check the mattress support hooks regularly.
* Don’t place a crib against a window, near curtains or drapery cords, or near furniture that could help your baby climb out.
* Crib toys need to be removed from the crib when baby is sleeping. And remove mobiles when baby is able to grab at objects.
Federal safety guidelines went into effect in 1973, but only since 1991 do most cribs meet all mandatory safety standards (16CFR part 1508) as set by The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) and the voluntary standards (ASTM F966 and F1169) as set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). The Juvenile Products Manufacturers’ Association (JPMA) certifies cribs that meet the safety standards.
For more information on crib safety and other nursery equipment, contact the Consumer Products Safety Commission at 1-800-638-2772.

I think my baby has gas and its probably from my bad breastfeeding or burping skills. I try to burp him after he feeds for like a half hour and nothing comes out. I have watched all sorts of online videos about burping… I have tried mylicon AND gripe water and it works for about 20 minutes and then he cries again. How long is it supposed to take for those medicines to work and for how long are they supposed to work? And do you think my baby is what they call “colicky”. I hate when people ask me if my baby is colicky just b/c I tell them he has gas. I have no clue what that means and its annoying to label my baby with it just b/c he has gas. Please help!
He is 2 weeks old
It’s not about labelling, it’s about helping your little one.
Colic used to be thought to be just a particularly fussy baby thing, now it’s being recognized as an intestinal gastric issue, likely suffered by babies with fussy digestve tracks that require delicate attention.
Gas is very painful for babies, if you think to a time when you’ve had a really bad gas bubble that won’t pop and how much it hurt, now imagine that bubble inside of baby’s tiny new tummy, poor little thing.
You need to be very careful with what you eat while yo breastfeed this baby, avoid foods that produce gas in you, because they will produce gas in him too.
The gripe water isn’t very effective I found, the Oval worked the best of everything I tried but even that has limits and you don’t want to OD him on the stuff.
Try laying him on his back on the carpet in front of you and scrunching his knees up to his tummy repeteatedly and slowly to help work the bubbles out. Turn it into a sing-songy game, he’ll like that, or at the very least wonder if mommy needs a nap cuz she’s going a bit nutso.
If the problem seems to be getting worse then talk to your doctor.
