Breastfeeding Help Video

Breastfeeding question?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxv6R9fUO74&feature=player_embedded

Yes, we’ve all seen this video, or at least most of us have, but I never actually asked, what do you think of it? Do you think she’s doing her girls a favor, and helping them, or do you think it’s just sick at this point?

I, personally, do not think it’s benefiting them at all, I think it’s setting them up for some serious ridicule from their peers, though. And, I think it’s weird, and gross.

Opinions?
Also, I understand when people say, “well, you don’t put a time limit on putting bottle nipples in your baby’s mouth and see nothing wrong with that” .. well, yes, there is a time frame, usually around 1 year of age babies should be off the bottle, but every baby is different .. however, if there were moms bottle-feeding their children at 8 years old, it would be a MUCH bigger deal than this!

disturbing beyond doubt!

Breastfeeding Twins Can be Made Into an Enjoyable Task!

Having twins is double celebration! However, breastfeeding twins is double hard work! Twins means double tantrums. But, if you know how to handle two tiny tots simultaneously, they give you some of the most wonderful moments of life!

One of the challenges of having two babies is overcoming breastfeeding problems. Will they get hungry together? Will you have to feed them one by one? There are lots of breastfeeding questions lingering in the minds of new moms. Here are some ways to help you handle the task of breastfeeding twin babies.

Making A Breastfeeding Chart

Prepare a visual chart of breastfeeding. This will help you know the time to feed your baby, by just looking at her. In case of twins, you need to prepare two charts. You should talk to your doctor regarding chart preparation. In addition to this, you need to discuss about baby food and baby formula that is right for your baby. It is best to give your milk, instead of giving baby formula for the initial months.

Your chart consists of columns like feeing time, meals fed, amount fed, and other such important details. This way, you will get an idea of the frequency of meals and the time your babies are hungry.

Remember; as your baby reaches 7-12 months of age, she will develop her own taste in food. You have twins does not mean, both of them will develop the same taste. There are common cases where twin have contrasting tastes and behavior. One of them may suck more milk than the other, or have different meal timings. The chart will help you keep a track on your twins’ feeding.

Handling Twins’ Call Of Hunger

A smart mom will always prepare her baby food in advance. This way, your babies get food instantly when they call for hunger and need not wait and wail loudly. It’s a good idea to prepare baby food at home. It’s fresh and hygienic, plus loaded with nutrients. Besides this, the food is free of preservatives and is of good quality. If you don’t want to create a hubbub in the house by two screaming babies, prepare baby food in advance!

Take the help of your doctor or midwife regarding positions for breastfeeding. You can buy breastfeeding tops as well as breastfeeding cover to ease in this task. Read articles and books on breastfeeding twins and enjoy the task!

Breastfeeding Low Blood Sugar

breastfeeding low blood sugar
How I can feel full longer?

I am constantly hungry or have blood sugar too low. I tried to eat high in carbohydrates such as pasta, bread, etc, and foods that are rich in protein such as eggs, fish, chicken, beans, etc., but I always end up hungry much earlier than I expected. I am breastfeeding, so I know the demand is coming from, only I have to know how to fix it. What kind of food I eat? I drink lots of water.

In my experience, I realized by eating a breakfast of lean protein such as eggs and lean meats like turkey bacon this may slow down the call to hunger for some time. Carbohydrates will send your blood sugar crashes and you will feel tired and hungry a few hours after eating. Also, be sure to eat small meals and not go four hours without eating. I have joined a site that offers free meals plans and programs example. It is an excellent guide to begin work in the right direction. In my opinion, is better than the E-diets. I hope this has helped www.TheDietBug.info.

A Third of 9-Month-Olds Already Obese or Overweight

The path toward obesity starts at a young age — even before babies transition to a solid diet, according to a new study.

Almost one-third of 9-month-olds are obese or overweight, as are 34 percent of 2-year-olds, according to the research, which looked at a nationally representative sample of children born in 2001. The study is one of the first to measure weight in the same group of very young children over time, said lead researcher Brian Moss, a sociologist at Wayne State University in Detroit. The results showed that starting out heavy puts kids on a trajectory  to stay that way.

If you were overweight at nine months old, it really kind of sets the stage for you to remain overweight at two years,” Moss told LiveScience.

Tracking obesity

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), childhood obesity  has tripled over the last three decades. In 2008, 19.6 percent of kids between the ages of 6 and 11 were obese.

But less is known about obesity rates in very young children. In fact, researchers hesitate to label children that young as “obese.”

Recent studies have raised the alarm about particularly large babies, however. One 2009 paper published in the journal Pediatrics found that babies who gain weight rapidly in the first six months of life are at increased risk of being obese by age 3. Another study, published in April 2010 in the Journal of Pediatrics, found that heavy 6-month-olds are more likely to be obese as 2-year-olds.

What can be done?

Studies have shown that exclusive breastfeeding — breastfeeding alone, not breastfeeding combined with bottle-feeding —prevents obesity,” said Dr. David McCormick, senior author of the April study at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. “Getting enough fiber — eating apples instead of drinking apple juice, for example — also helps keep babies on track to a healthy weight. By contrast, improper early introduction of cereal by adding it to an infant’s bottle promotes obesity.”

Overweight infants

Moss and his co-author, William Yeaton of the University of Michigan, used data from a survey called the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort, which contains data on 8,900 babies at nine months and 7,500 of those same babies at 2 years. (Some families moved out of the country or didn’t respond to the second round of surveys.) The researchers classified the babies’ weights based on CDC growth charts, which compare a baby’s growth to a standardized growth curve. Kids in the 95th percentile of weight were categorized as “obese,” while kids in the 85th to 95th percentile were counted as “at-risk,” similar to the adult category of “overweight,” Moss said.

Even in the first year of life, many babies fall into these two categories, Moss and his colleagues report in the January/February issue of the American Journal of Health Promotion. In the 9-month age group, 15.2 percent of babies were at-risk and 16.7 percent were obese. Among 2-year-olds, just under 14 percent were at-risk and almost 21 percent were obese.

So you’re seeing, combined, more kids being at-risk and obese [in the 2-year-old age group],” Moss said. “Of that combined total, more kids are obese than at-risk at two years.”

The find hints at an unfortunate pattern: Kids who start out heavier end up heavier. Of kids who were normal weight at 9 months old, 75 percent were still normal weight at 2 years. But kids who were at-risk at nine months had only a 50 percent chance of being normal weight at age 2. More than 28 percent of at-risk kids ended up obese by their second birthday.

Obese 9-month-olds showed an even starker pattern. Only 37.6 percent were normal weight at age 2. Just over 18 percent did improve to the at-risk category, but 43.9 percent remained obese.

It’s not likely that doctors are going to be recommending infants go on a diet anytime soon, Moss said. However, the results could help target health education and other interventions to the populations that need them, he said. The study found that Hispanic babies were at the highest risk of becoming overweight or obese. Babies in families of low socioeconomic status were also more likely to be heavy.

It would be pretty important if we could, instead of reacting to kids who are already obese, maybe try to get them on a healthy track at the very early ages of their lives,” Moss said.

Breastfeeding Commercial

What kinds of over the counter remedies can I safely take while taking high blood pressure medication?

I have high blood pressure, and I am currently taking a mild hypertension medication called Methyldopa 250 mg three times per day. This medication is appropriate for me because I’m breastfeeding. My question is: what over-the-counter remedy or remedies can I safely take for the following symptoms: sneezing; runny nose; nasal congestion; coughing. I saw on a commercial that Coricidin is safe for patients with high blood pressure, but when I purchased it, the box indicated that it would only treat chest congestion and cough; it won’t help sneezing, runny nose or nasal congestion. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

none -so talk to your doctor.

Breastfeeding Clogged Breast

My breastfeeding wife’s left breast is much firmer than her right breast. She thinks it may be clogged. Help!?

My wife has been breastfeeding for about four months. She pumps exclusively and bottle feeds. Today she noticed her left breast is firmer than her right breast and she says it kind of stings. Could it possibly be clogged in some way? What can she do? Thank you for any advice!

sounds like its clogged. Take a warm washcloth and rest it on the firm side for a few minutes. Keep massaging the breast and feeding from the breast until the firmness goes away.

It can get painful and threaten milk supply if she doesn’t take care of it right away.

Gain Weight Breastfeeding

Weight GAIN whilst breastfeeding!!!?

I have been breastfeeding my son for almost 10 months and am half a stone heavier now than just after i gave birth! Breastfeeding does make me really hungry (as does my medication-dosulepin-a tricyclic antidepressant). Everyone else seems to lose weight breastfeeding! Anyone else experienced this?

Everyone is different. But breastfeeding can burn anywhere up to 600 calories a day, which can help you lose weight. That being said, if you eat 1000 extra calories a day, you’ll be gaining not losing.

If you are hungry a lot, try munching on fruits, vegetables, and whole grain snacks! You feel and look better :]

Breastfeeding Pictures On Facebook

Do you mind women breastfeeding in public?

This is your personal opinion, not if you think it should be legal or not. I have no problem with it, if fat women are allowed to parade around in short shorts and mini skirts with their flappy cleavage hanging out, then a woman can feed her baby. I just feel bad for kids whose moms take pictures of them breastfeeding and put it on Facebook or Myspace – that kid will be so embarrassed when he is older! But some people love attention…

I don’t see the problem with it.

How to Register for just about any Baby

Registering for just about any newborn may possibly be confusing and overwhelming. However, in the event you retain it very simple and therefore can be found armed with an planned report of objects you contact for and want, the method can go an ideal offer faster.

Babies contact for loads of things, but not all at the moment in time and never once they are original born.

I usually suggest examining out other people’s registries to acquire ideas before for you go. in the event you see repeat objects on registries, it’s protected to presume they are selected for just about any reason.

Bring the hubby along. He’ll have enjoyment using the registering gun.

BRINGING newborn HOME

The pursuing are objects you contact for and/or I found out beneficial to possess when bringing newborn home.

Burp Cloths and Bibs – And loads of them. allow good friends purchase the cute fancy ones, but ensure to stock options up concerning the cloth diaper choice of burp cloths.

Receiving Blankets – they are usually a should have and completely needed if your newborn is born even although in the colder months.

Bodysuits/Undershirts – You’ll meet these beneath all of baby’s outfits so obtain a bunch. obtain the two lengthy and short sleeve. Also, ensure to snag some inside the button-up shirts your newborn will meet on in the hospital. They are exceptional for when baby’s cord hasn’t fallen away however as well as you need to retain clothing objects loose.

Bottles – I breastfed for 6 weeks, but I formula fed at precisely the exact same time, so we required bottles best suited away. We started out away with three inside the 5 ounce bottles and now use 4 inside the nine ounce bottles. you may want a few the great offer over that, but I don’t like clutter and don’t views washing them every solitary day. in the event you have dogs, purchase a bunch of nipples for the reason which they will get them, chew them and ruin them. exact same for pacifiers.

Breast Pumps – in the event you are going to breastfeed, you’ll want a pump. I rented mine away from your hospital, which saved me bucks for the reason that busts pumps are not cheap. using the rental I obtained a package deal of producer new sterilized accessories. in the event you are in it for the lengthy term, obtain a pump that consists of a hands-free bra. You’ll appreciate getting your arms readily available to accomplish other objects even although pumping.

Infant vehicle Seat – You definitely contact for just about any vehicle seat. The hospital won’t allow you leave unless you have one. Don’t bother bringing it at any time you confirm in. It will just hold up space within your room. Your husband can provide it in 5 mins before for you are arranged to leave. Just ensure he leaves the bottom even although in the car.

Swaddles and Sleepsacks – obtain a bunch of these. Your newborn will sleep for just about any few weeks swaddled, so you’ll need to possess a few unique fabrics depending concerning the season.

Monitor – There are pretty a few options concerning the industry which consists of movement photo monitors.

First support package deal – ensure it has it all brush, comb, scissors, toe nail clipper, fingertip toothbrush, emery boards, nasal aspirator, thermometer, meds dropper, etc. Also have some tiny Noses, newborn Tylenol, newborn Aquaphor and Desitin on hand.

Diaper Pail – Your newborn will possibly be pooping best suited apart so you’ll contact for just about any area to meet individuals stinky diapers.

Wash Cloths and Towels – Even although your newborn won’t obtain a genuine bath until their cord falls out, you’ll nevertheless need to sponge them along every solitary few of days. You can sustain away concerning the tub until the cord falls out.

Boppy – This pillow is exceptional for breastfeeding and for baby’s tummy time.

You don’t should go stocking up on these objects before to newborn is born. You can obtain an enormous amount of the stuff away from your hospital. Be optimistic to provide an additional unfilled bag for the hospital and hold as an ideal offer of those objects when you can.

Once you already know the kind of diapers your newborn will possibly be using, Amazon.com may possibly be considered a exceptional area to acquire diapers in bulk for much less money. Costco may possibly be considered a exceptional area to purchase wipes and formula.

ITEMS YOU CAN SKIP

These are objects I found out unnecessary or was informed no to acquire by specialists collectively with other moms.

Bottle Warmer – waste materials of counter space. You can usually run chilly busts milk below a warm faucet to cozy it up, or use warmer tap consuming water for mixing formula.

Wipes Warmer – you already know you adore your baby’s tushy, but a cozy wipe isn’t necessary.

Car sunshine Shade – this really is really a producing hazard. You shouldn’t have something even although in the backseat except the newborn even although in the infant carrier.

Car Mirror – producing risk again. You’ll be seeing your newborn the whole time as opposed to seeing the road. sooner or afterwards your newborn will understand you can see them and start whining for you. an ideal offer better to leave them to their non-public products and find out some independence.

Sleep Positioner – The packaging tells you that it facilitates prevents SIDS, but there isn’t any science to back again this up. as well as you’re not designed to possess something even although in the crib – this consists of a sleep positioner.

NICE TO HAVES

These are objects you can meet in your registry, but don’t contact for best suited away.

Stroller Blanket – I listed for just about any few personalized objects which consists of a stroller blanket.

Bath Time products and options – The hospital will provide you with some samples, but it’s wonderful to meet a reward basket in your registry.

Baby Carrier – My Aunt obtained me a really awesome sling that arrives in handy. They may possibly be expensive, so allow somebody else purchase just one for you.

Pack N hold out – We really required this product best suited away, as my daughter’s crib hadn’t arrived in the time she had.

Mobile – I waited a little bit as well lengthy to acquire just one for the reason that my daughter really enjoys seeing the cellular go round. obtain just one that is battery operated. Ours cranks also it stops actively playing pursuing a minute.

You’ll obtain an enormous amount of clothes, publications and toys as presents too. Most people will go away registry for individuals items. If there is something particular you want, be optimistic to meet it in your registry.

THINGS YOU’LL contact for LATER

These are objects that you’ll contact for the moment in time newborn gets bigger. It certainly not hurts to possess them in your registry. as well as most large newborn stores provide a completion plan in which you obtain a low cost on any objects left in your registry.

Toddler vehicle Seat – Convertible vehicle seats are wonderful for the reason which they are the two rear and top facing. This implies that the newborn which has outgrown the infant carrier can nevertheless go within of a bigger vehicle seat that is rear facing.

Bumbo – Your newborn won’t possess the ability to sit on this nifty chair until they are able to sustain their heads up and straight. But the moment in time they can, this tiny seat is exceptional and may possibly be employed like a feeding chair once the time comes.

Some questions about welfare and basic medical

This is what we have been asked recently!
Maybe a doctor-owned health only a single simple group can be much better?
Many groups may have many doctors who need help before and why these people make many physicians. We are willing to bet that you look at the ages that many doctors will not be exceeded to stop working and small blood vessels are required to work in cases too lazy to respond in particular, many patients begin a medical center a lot. Doctors prefer the background of people before, but I can not go to medical support and management of the hospital staff with a very sick person affected.

What type of business health should see a year 10?
Almost all pediatricians caring for children under 16 by the intermediary. One member of a family doctor train is an efficient alternative if it is an emotion too old for a pediatrician. Similarly, consider professional health workers. Usually have more than counseling and education traditional development and growth is now very important in the life of a child.

One can start a physician with someone who is not a professional health?
Trust. Some doctors may open a path of good practice to have a reception staff, a health worker or personal assistant breastfeeding may be exercised within the scope of practice as defined by State guiidelines, and even a doctor who goes to the people or a professional. No hon problem

What kind of doctor should see my mom for leg pain?
Anthony, start with the family doctor and I also hope that give you as much as a working diagnosis. This is so you better have a sense of if you want any health intervention specialist.

It may occur between a family doctor, medical practice and internal medicine specialist?
Once you escape the medical school to specialize can in many ways. A couple of them are d'Among the interior and medicine also liked the small practice. Not all physicians have a "degree" in the internal process.

All advice / experience with the IUD / IUC please?

Ok, I sent this before the health of women, but received no answers. Please, ladies? I am looking for experiences, please. Ok, so a long story behind what I want, so if you want more details, please send me a message and I'll be more than happy to fill you in essence, was nursing until I got my Mirena put in and I lost my milk. Now I'm ready to go to Planned Parenthood or health department to get a copper IUD. Has anyone had a copper IUD before? How was your experience with it? Mine was horrible with the Mirena. I do not think I have a very good tolerance to hormonal methods of birth control. I was in a bad mood than usual, and I gained weight. I have not stopped since I had bleeding in early December '08. Thanks!

I know this does not answer your question, but I want to share my story in case you decide keep the Mirena or if other players are considering. I have a Mirena IUC in December 2006, shortly after having my son. I bled for three consecutive months, and then light periods are irregular. In May 2008, I had just finished my period, or so I thought, when a few days later I started bleeding a lot, the heaviest I bled in my life. I called my doctor and she said it appears that the IUC was out of place and get a pregnancy test as it was possible he could have become pregnant after Dallas fell. I went to buy the test, took it home and had to immediately. The test was positive immediately. I ended up going to the hospital later that night, because blood scares me and knew I was pregnant I was scared. I arrived at the hospital and the first thing you check the placement of the IUC. Go figure, I was in the correct position. An ultrasound confirmed my pregnancy, I was about 5 weeks. The ultrasound also revealed that the pregnancy was in my fallopian tube, it was an ectopic pregnancy. As the doctor told me all this, he noted that IUDs prevent pregnancy and IUCS For example, only prevent it from implanting in the uterus. That is my story … Best wishes to you!

I will be breastfeeding the new baby when she comes in November. Then when I return to work February, I will be pumping full time. I breastfed my son until he was 13 months via pump. He has not been breastfed in 5 months, and he will be about 26 months when I start pumping again.

Would a 22 month old benefit from breast milk in a sippy cup at all or would it be a waste for me to pump extra?

It would be a great benefit. Some mothers don’t know how much your breast milk improves a child’s immunity against diseases. The WHO recommend breastfeeding each child for 5 years with 24 months being the absolute minimmum for best health. Even adults have been proven to benefit from it. It is wonderful stuff, like liquid gold! Don’t waste this opportunity!

Calories Burned Breastfeeding

How Breastfeeding Helps New Moms Lose Weight

There are many reasons breastfeeding is good for both you and your baby.  But did you know that breastfeeding can help you lose weight? This is good news, considering most new moms who’ve put on extra weight during pregnancy are eager to lose it.

It takes a lot of calories to produce milk for baby, almost 200-500 extra calories is what a mom needs to maintain her weight. The higher caloric requirement for breastfeeding is the reason why the extra body fat is stored during pregnancy, because it’s the source of extra fuel to produce milk. Breastfeeding does help new moms lose weight quickly by burning up that stored fat.

Even though breastfeeding can help a new moms lose weight, it can take some time to lose the extra pounds and shrink the uterus to its normal size. If you’re a breastfeeding mom and you’ve chose to start a weight loss program, here are some tips that breastfeeding experts recommends:

It’s best to lose weight slowly and steadily. Lose no more than 1 pound per week. This will ensure that you have enough energy of needing to be a mom and it prevents you from becoming cranking, hungry and tired all from not eating well. Also gradual weight loss won’t affect the milk supply, but fast weight loss can compromise the breastfeeding mom and her baby.

Have a well-balanced weight loss diet, one that includes plenty of fruit and veggies, whole grains, lean source of protein and some ‘good’ fats

Combining exercise with your weight loss diet is the best way to lose fat and retain lean body mass. Also, this will make you a better calorie burner when you’ve reached you weight loss goal.

Mommy Without Pounds is an excellent online resource guide that explains many other great tips to postpartum weight loss. This guide will give you post pregnancy weight loss information and diet and exercise tips to help you get back to you pre-pregnancy weight.

Breastfeeding Alcohol How Long

How long does it take for alcohol to leave breastmilk?

OK, so my wife and I haven’t had sex in forever (once since November 2007. Twice if you count non-intercourse. Yes. I am a saint–as long as porn doesn’t count). I want to take her out, get her drunk and then do all the things I used to do to her before we got married. She won’t drink because she’s breastfeeding. I say use formula for a day or two until the alcohol leaves my wife’s system? (She can pump and throw the bad milk out, right?) Alcohol doesn’t stay in the system THAT long does it?

Here is a GREAT article about it.

It says 2-3 drinks are fine to have. She should avoid breastfeeding for 2-3 hours after drinking and there is no need to pump and dump as alcohol leaves the milk as it leaves the blood. Obviously if she is drinking more than that (which actually she may not have to since after that long of not drinking it doesn’t take much to get drunk!!) you should wait an average of 1 hr per drink. General consensus is if you’re sober enough to drive you are sober enough to breastfeed.

http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle…

Here is a chart of how much expressed breastmilk she will probably need for your baby while you are gone. I wouldn’t give her formula as your wife will be leaking everywhere from not pumping and it will be very painful for her. It also might upset the baby’s stomach. This calculator will tell you how much she should pump.

http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/milkc…

If you have never given the baby a bottle before you should try it a few times before that night to make sure he/she will take it. Have someone else give it to her though because if she smells your wife she may refuse the bottle and want the breast.
Have fun on your night out!

Breastfeeding Burning Breast

breastfeeding burning breast
Breast infection from breastfeeding?

i have been breastfeeding my son for almost 3 months but the last couple of days my left breast has had a painful burning sensation
cant seem to find anything on the internet

http://www.llli.org/FAQ/thrush.html
Is thrush causing my sore nipples?

Persistent nipple pain in the early weeks of breastfeeding, or nipple pain that appears after several weeks or months of pain-free nursing, may be caused by thrush which is a yeast infection of the nipples. Additional symptoms can include

* Itchy or burning nipples that appear pink or red, shiny, flaky, and/or have a rash with tiny blisters.
* Cracked nipples.
* Shooting pains in the breast during or after feedings.
* Intense nipple or breast pain that is not improved with better latch-on and positioning.
* Deep breast pain.

You may be at higher risk for developing thrush if you or your baby has had a recent course of antibiotics, your nipples are cracked or damaged or you are taking oral contraceptives or steroids (such as for asthma).

Be sure to examine other causes of nipple and breast pain. (There is a thorough list at the end of this article.) Positioning and latch-on problems are the most common causes of pain. Breastfeeding isn’t supposed to hurt! Check out the LLLI Sore Nipples FAQ for additional information.

Signs and Symptoms

In mother:

* intense nipple or breast pain that occurs from birth, lasts throughout the feeding, or is not improved with better latch-on and positioning
* sudden onset of nipple pain after a period of pain-free nursing
* cracked nipples
* nipples that are itchy and/or burning and that may appear pink or red, shiny, or flaky and/or have a rash and tiny blisters; nipples may also appear normal
* shooting pains in the breast during or after a feeding if the yeast has invaded the milk ducts
* nipple or breast pain with correct use of an automatic electric breastpump
* a vaginal yeast infection

http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/mastitis.html

How do I know if I have a plugged duct or mastitis?
PLUGGED DUCT A plugged (or blocked) duct is an area of the breast where milk flow is obstructed. The nipple pore may be blocked (see Milk Blister), or the obstruction may be further back in the ductal system. A plugged duct usually comes on gradually and affects only one breast.
Local symptoms Mom will usually notice a hard lump or wedge-shaped area of engorgement in the vicinity of the plug that may feel tender, hot, swollen or look reddened. Occasionally mom will only notice localized tenderness or pain, without an obvious lump or area of engorgement. The location of the plug may shift.

A plugged duct will typically feel more painful before a feeding and less tender afterward, and the plugged area will usually feel less lumpy or smaller after nursing. Nursing on the affected side may be painful, particularly at letdown.
Systemic symptoms There are usually no systemic symptoms for a plugged duct, but a low fever (less than 101.3°F / 38.5°C) may be present.

MASTITIS Per Maureen Minchin (Breastfeeding Matters, Chapter 6), mastitis is an inflammation of the breast that can be caused by obstruction, infection and/or allergy. The incidence of postpartum mastitis in Western women is 20%; mastitis is not nearly so common in countries where breastfeeding is the norm and frequent breastfeeding is typical. Mastitis is most common in the first 2-3 weeks, but can occur at any stage of lactation. Mastitis may come on abruptly, and usually affects only one breast.
Local symptoms Local symptoms are the same as for a plugged duct, but the pain/heat/swelling is usually more intense. There may be red streaks extending outward from the affected area.
Systemic symptoms Typical mastitis symptoms include a fever of 101.3°F (38.5°C) or greater, chills, flu-like aching, malaise and systemic illness.

Common (and not-so-common) side effects of plugged ducts or mastitis
Plugged duct

* Milk supply and pumping output from the affected breast may decrease temporarily. This is normal and extra nursing/pumping generally get things back to normal within a short time.
* Occasionally a mom may express “strings” or grains of thickened milk or fatty-looking milk.
* After a plugged duct or mastitis has resolved, it is common for the area to remain reddened or have a bruised feeling for a week or so afterwards.

Mastitis

Side effects may be the same as for a plugged duct, plus:

* Expressed milk may look lumpy, clumpy, “gelatin-like” or stringy. This milk is fine for baby, but some moms prefer to strain the “lumps” out.
* Milk may take on a saltier taste due to increased sodium and chloride content – some babies may resist/refuse the breast due to this temporary change.
* Milk may occasionally contain mucus, pus or blood.

Issues Breastfeeding

issues breastfeeding
2 weeks old having breastfeeding issues?

I have a 2 week, 2 day old baby girl and I am having issues with breastfeeding. She is not latching on correctly but I really want to feed her this way. I have been supplementing her with formula since I am not making enough milk due to her not latching on. Is it to late to get her to breastfeed correctly or is there something I can still do? I do attempt to breastfeed even though it hurts really bad because she doesn’t have enough of the nipple and areola area in her mouth because I feel breast milk is better than formula and I don’t want to completely dry up. Also how can I make more milk so she can get enough from me without supplementation.

It isn’t too late to fully breast feed your baby – what you should do is find a Lactation Consultant (the hospital where you gave birth can probably help you with that – just call the Maternity dept), or you can contact the La Leche League in your area – there is almost no problem they haven’t come across and they will be able to help you.

Meanwhile, try picking your baby up when she is asleep and putting her to the breast, she may latch on better then, rather than when she is impatient and hungry.

Also, try getting your breast milk flowing before you put her on the breast, she will get milk right from the start and won’t get frustrated.

Good Luck – keep going – you already know how good breast milk is for your daughter!

Breastfeeding Diet Colic Baby

Has anyone found a solution to colic or did you have to wait for you baby to outgrow it?

I found my daughters reason for Colic that my Dr insisted was something she just had to outgrow – it turned out to be dairy in my diet (breastfeeding) and in formula. How about you? (it was all day colic for 6 weeks until I found out what was wrong – not the couple of hours of screaming 3 times a week)

the first 9 weeks of my babies life all she did was SCREAM constantly when she was awake and she hardly slept – it was so hard going…the doctors tried many different things – reflux meds, changing formula to a diff brand, then reflux one, gas drops etc etc etc

then we finally at 9 wks found out shes lactose intollerant – now shes on lactose free formula she is a completely different baby. its HEAVEN! i mean all babies cry sometimes – but shes actually like a normal baby now! if you know what i mean :)
