Foods To Avoid Breastfeeding Colic

Eating For Breastfeeding Your Baby

Typically if you are nursing your baby you should produce anywhere from 23 to 27 ounces of milk a day. In order to do this, you need to increase your calorie intake by about 500 more a day.

You also have to increase your water consumption to at least 2 1/2 to 3 quarts of water a day. You may notice that you are thirstier during nursing session. This is because the water you drink goes right to milk production. Try not to drink more than 3 quarts of water a day. Anything more than 3 quarts can reduce the amount of milk your body produces.

As stated earlier, you need to up your calorie intake. Plan to take in about 2500 calories a day or more if you are planning to nurse for longer than three months. These extra calories should not come from junk food. Junk food and sweets are just empty calories and offer no nutritional value to you or your baby. Eat more protein. A good rule of thumb is to eat 1 gram of protein each day for every pound you weigh. If you weigh 150, aim to eat 150grams of protein a day.

If you were not doing so during pregnancy, adopt the six meals a day program. Eat breakfast, a midday snack, lunch, a mid afternoon snack, dinner and a night time snack. Your body is going to be making milk continually so it is a good idea to keep it charged with calories through out the day.

There are some foods you might want to avoid during pregnancy. Pretty much everything passes through breast milk and to the baby. This is why the first thing pediatricians advise nursing moms to do when their baby has colic is to look at what they are eating. Chocolate has been blamed in many cases of colic and can cause an upset tummy for most babies. f you have a baby with a tummy ache think back to see if you had a candy bar or even a cookie in the hours before you nursed. The best advice is to stay away from chocolate while you are nursing.

Stay away from greasy and spicy foods while you are breastfeeding. Greasy foods sometimes upset adults stomachs, imagine what it would do to your baby’s immature stomach? Wait until your baby is older and no longer nursing before you start making trips back to McDonalds.

You may also want to stay away from garlic and onions while you are breast feeding. Both of these can flavor the breast milk and you may find that your little one will not nurse if you have eaten these. Your little one may be just a tad too young to appreciate the taste of garlic and onions anyway. Remember it takes a few hours for the food you eat to make its way into your breast milk. You may have eaten one of these foods right before you nurse and see your baby is fine but by either the following nursing session or the one after you might find your baby having a reaction then.

Your breast milk does not only taste like what you eat, but also what you drink. Just as with pregnancy, you should stay away from a lot of caffeine while breastfeeding. You might need some coffee or caffeine filled soda to keep you functioning and a cup or two will not hurt you or your baby, but too much could have disastrous effects. Just as we experience the jitters and shakes from too much caffeine, your baby does also. Keep your caffeine down to a minimum.

You have made an excellent choice breastfeeding your baby. Keep it up by making good choices as to what you eat. I am going to show you how to get pregnant right now. Pregnancy Miracle has helped thousands of women who need help Eating For Breastfeeding Your Baby.

Parents Get Ready for Unexpected Events

Parents want to protect their children when surprising circumstances arise.  Whether utility service has been interrupted or you’ve been unexpectedly stranded, there are ways to be prepared.   PREPARED, NOT PANICKED  Panic is a great danger in an emergency – as mentioned in the article: RULE OF 3′S TO SURVIVE.  Children will pick up on your emotion.  Your preparation will make you confident so that your children will draw strength from you.   THE NEED FOR A ROUTINE  Look for creative ways to implement a daily routine for the sake of your children.   A parent instituted routine is comforting to the child.  PASTIMES   Amusements help pass the time when you are unable to travel.   It is unlikely that you will have access to a source of power to operate electronic games.   Craft supplies are wonderful to have on hand; this includes play dough, scissors, paper, tape, markers, glue and other assorted items.   Take the time to introduce your children to board games, dolls, toy cars, blocks, puzzles and reading in order that they will be welcomed ‘old friends’ should they need entertainment.   It is also wise to keep educational materials stocked (items such as work books, flash cards, pencils, reference books, etc.) in the event you find organized schooling is no longer an option.   MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH  Your dental health and other health conditions should be tended while you have access to remedies and treatments.  Rather than neglect those annoying aches and pains, take steps to remedy them so they aren’t a factor in an emergency.  Remember to keep any necessary medicines in stock.  Get into the habit of observing the sleeping, eating and toilet patterns of your family members so that you will detect illness early and be able to deal with it proactively.  Train yourself to take note of the impact of circumstances on those around you. It is easy to become consumed with your own difficulties and overlook warning signals that others may need help.   CULTIVATE AN APPRECIATION FOR REAL FOODS  The foods you consume today will affect your health tomorrow.   Children that are trained to be picky eaters could do themselves harm by refusing to consume needed nutrients. A pallet can be taught to appreciate the taste and texture of REAL foods, but the exercise is complicated by taste buds dulled on sugars and processed foods.   Take time to introduce new foods gradually in the diet.   Learn about nutrition and basic food preparation  – and teach your children about these things also.   INFANT AND BABY CARE  Proper care of a baby doesn’t require a lot of equipment. Contrary to advertisements, babies can thrive without cribs, bouncy chairs, carriers, disposable diapers, pacifiers, music boxes, and other assorted gadgets.   An infant’s needs are simply to be fed, warm, dry and clean.  Nursing an infant is a skill that can be learned.  Even if you should choose to give your infant bottled formula, it is in mother and baby’s best interest to invest the time to breastfeed during those crucial first months.   This can help insure that the smallest family member has a ready supply of nourishment.   For bottle-fed babies, you will need to keep formula in stock.   Infants require protection from extremes of cold and heat as their bodies aren’t yet able to regulate temperature.   Babies need to be shielded from the summer sun.   Umbrellas are useful for this application.  In the winter, dressing little ones in layers protects them from the cold.  Zippered fleece sleepers can be placed over long thermal underwear for nighttime warmth.  Sharing a bed with 2 or 3 others helps everyone stay warm at night.   Wool socks, hats and zippered fleece jackets can keep babies warm during the day.   SANITATION   Daily baths won’t be possible if water is in short supply or if temperatures are very cool. Find the warmest spot in your living quarters and teach your children that they should wash their faces, hands, feet and privates every day.  Before meals, have them wash their hands.   As conditions may not be ideal, this precaution is well worth the trouble to maintain everyone’s health.  Take the time to teach older children about latrine construction, placement and proper disposal of waste.   USEFUL ABILITIES  Children become more confident as they gain life skills. Give your children the gift of learning how to do such things as shop wisely, stock a pantry, pitch a tent, build a camp fire, cook, sew, garden, repair small engines, perform first aid, CPR, and swim.   Understanding what to do during a fire drill, how to fend off an attack and having practiced other scenarios are real confidence builders.   Prepared children aren’t as likely to fall apart emotionally.   When preparedness is made part of your daily living, your children will be better equipped to deal with emergencies.  Rather than face the unknown with desperation, you will have a plan and your little ones will know what to expect.   Strengthen your family today with these measures.  Unexpected circumstances present parents with challenges in caring for their children. No matter whether you’ve been stranded or if your electric service has been interrupted, planning ahead helps you deal with the unexpected.

PREPARED, NOT PANICKED
According to the RULE OF 3’s TO SURVIVE, it is dangerous to panic in an emergency. Young ones will mirror your feelings. Your preparation will make you confident so that your children will draw strength from you.

THE NEED FOR A ROUTINE
Find opportunities to institute some semblance of a routine in your children’s day. This is comforting and offers a sense of stability from the parent to the child.

ENTERTAINMENT
When you find yourself isolated, the ability to amuse oneself is a necessity. It is unlikely that you will have access to a source of power to operate electronic games. Keep craft supplies on hand: crayons, markers, paper, play dough, scissors, tape, etc. Spend time with your children working puzzles, board games, dolls, blocks, toy cars, and reading books so that they have an appreciation for ‘low-tech’ entertainment. Have educational materials (workbooks, etc.) on hand in case organized schooling is not an option.

PREPARE FOR GOOD HEALTH
Your dental health and other health conditions should be tended while you have access to remedies and treatments. It is far better to meet unexpected events with well-maintained health rather than ailments worsened by neglect. Stock any medicines required by your family members. Make note of the eliminations, sleep patterns and appetite of each family member so that you will detect quickly if any are becoming ill and treat them at the first sign of sickness. Rather than focusing on your own challenges, take some time to become a student of others so you will be the first to recognize when someone in your party is being adversely affected by circumstances.

AVOID FAKE FOODS
The foods you consume today will affect your health tomorrow. Picky eaters can become ill if they refuse nutritious foods. A pallet can be taught to appreciate the taste and texture of REAL foods, but the exercise is complicated by taste buds dulled on sugars and processed foods. Take time to introduce new foods gradually in the diet. Basic real food preparation and nutrition should become hot topics for learning and teaching in your home.

INFANTS & BABIES
Proper care of a baby doesn’t require a lot of equipment. Contrary to advertisements, babies can thrive without cribs, bouncy chairs, carriers, disposable diapers, pacifiers, music boxes, and other assorted gadgets. Babies need to be kept fed, clean, dry and warm.

Breastfeeding is a learned skill. Learning to breastfeed is a wise investment in the health of both the baby and the mother. This can help insure that the smallest family member has a ready supply of nourishment. Don’t forget to keep formula on hand for babies fed from a bottle.

Infants aren’t able to regulate body temperature and must be protected from extremes of heat or cold. In summer, protect babies from direct sun. Employ an umbrella for protection. In the winter, dressing little ones in layers protects them from the cold. Zippered fleece sleepers can be placed over long thermal underwear for nighttime warmth. Sharing a bed with several persons will also help keep everyone warm at night. During the day, wool socks and a hat help little ones keep warm along with a zippered fleece jacket.

SANITATION
Daily baths won’t be possible if water is in short supply or if temperatures are very cool. Find the warmest spot in your living quarters and teach your children that they should wash their faces, hands, feet and privates every day. Insure that hands are washed before eating and before meal preparation. This is important for healthy hygiene in rustic conditions. Take the time to teach older children about latrine construction, placement and proper disposal of waste.

EXPERTISE
Children become more confident as they gain life skills. Children will benefit immensely from learning lessons about how to perform CPR, first aid, gardening, swimming, building a camp fire, how to stock a pantry, pitch a tent, shop for supplies, sew and repair small engines. Knowing self defense, what to do in a fire drill and practicing other scenarios builds confidence. These children have a plan and aren’t as likely to panic.

Emergencies will be handled better by children that have been trained in an atmosphere of preparedness. Rather than be fearful, your young ones will understand what is necessary to manage a crisis. Strengthen your family today with these measures.

We’ve all heard the little joke about the impossibility of a woman being only a “little pregnant,” but this is actually a good way to view the term pregnancy in general. Why? Pregnancy is not just a single stage or step of the reproduction process, and the healthiest experiences come from handling your pregnancy as if it were a series of stages beginning in the weeks before ovulation and only endi…

Choosing Breastfeeding Clothing – Nursing Openings

I am often asked what exactly IS a Nursing top, and how does it differ from a Maternity top? The simple answer is nursing tops offer you quick and easy access to the breast for nursing your little one, whilst keeping your chest, tummy, back and sides covered.  Many designs work well both during pregnancy and afterwards for nursing, giving you even better value for money.  These dual purpose tops are known as “transition clothing” and ensure that you look fabulous from your first trimester to your fourth!

Many new mamas feel a little self-conscious nursing in public, and this is where well designed  nursing tops can really help. With a little practice you will be able to simply and easily pull aside the nursing opening and latch your little one on, without anyone being any the wiser.

There are different styles of nursing access  available, and everyone has their own favourite style.  All of the tops have a concealed nursing underlayer which has slits or cut-out openings for easy access to the breast.  Some styles are brilliant for nursing in a sling, others provide maximum coverage whilst you are feeding.  All are skilfully designed and the nursing openings wonderfully disguised so you really cannot tell they are nursing tops at all!

Pull Aside

This type of breastfeeding opening is accessed simply by pulling aside fabric at the top of the garment.  These styles are simple to use and the nursing access can be gained single-handedly. These necklines of these styles vary and include crossover, deep vee necks or cowl neck styles and are available from a wide range of designers.

Empire Line

This style of top has nursing openings which are accessed by pulling up the top at the empire line, just under the bust. The styling of the clothing means that the empire band sits just under your bust, and is styled to look like a regular top. Milk Nursingwear’s keyhole dress is a perfect example of this style of nursing opening.

Oversized Armhole

This style of nursing access is really clever  –  the overlayer of the garment is pulled aside to access the nursing layer underneath at the front.  The very popular Dote Noir nursing dress  features this unique type of nursing access.

Pull Down

Nursing openings are in an underlayer which is accessed by pulling down the uppermost layer on the clothing – the Dote Slate breastfeeding top is a fabulous example where the funky styling of the top ensures that the breastfeeding function is disguised brilliantly.

Crossover

Two overlapping bands conceal the breastfeeding openings beneath. This style is fabulous for breastfeeding twins, as both sides can be accessed easily simultaneously.  An example of this style is Annee Matthew’s Criss Cross breastfeeding top.

Double layer

This style of top has two layers which sit on top of one another. Pulling the uppermost layer upwards will give access to the nursing openings, whilst keeping your back, tummy and sides covered by the bottom nursing underlayer. Bella Mama Maia breastfeeding top has two layers all the way around the top, whilst the Annee Matthew Kelly top has the double layer only at the front of the top. The double layer helps to keep you cosy in the colder months, by giving you an extra layer of fabric!

Modesty panel

Nursing tops with a modesty layer don’t have slits for nursing access, but a panel of fabric which sits flat against the chest and can be lifted at either side to give access to the breast. This gives a very smooth line to the breastfeeding top as there is no “cut out” area underneath.  Mayreau’s best-selling and immensely popular Mia tops feature this type of breastfeeding access.

Double Layer Nursing Panel

Two layers of overlapping panels cover the chest and one layer pulls down, whilst the other layer pulls up for nursing access. Peek-a-boo tops have this innovative style of nursing opening.

Calorie Intake Breastfeeding

calorie intake breastfeeding
Help! I need to lose 50 pounds, but I’m injured and can’t exercise. Any advice on how I can lose the weight?

I need to lose the 50 pounds of weight that I packed on during my pregnancy to get to my goal weight of 120 pounds. I have 2 problems. I’m breastfeeding so I can’t restrict my calorie intake too much and I’m also injured. I have 2 herniated disks in my lower back and because of this I have a really horrible case of sciatica. To sabotage my efforts even further I have a debilitating case of endometriosis that leaves me doubled over in pain on an almost daily basis. So basically I’m in pain from my lower back down almost all of the time and I’m exhausted from being a new mom. How can I drop this weight without working out? Is there some weight training that I could do with my arms or something? I have no idea how to handle this so any advice would be wonderful.

Thank you!

You don’t need to work out to lose weight. It just helps the process along. Even a mild execrise like walking will help.

Also, the breastfeeding helps you lose weight. Milk production will require alot of calories and you have alot of extra energy stored in the left over pregnancy weight so dont worry too much about a calorie reduced diet. Just take your vitamins , drink a good amount of water and eat healthy. You will notice the weight drop.

Breastfeeding Colic Foods

Get Information on Baby Colic

If your baby has colic you’ve probably been on a search for baby colic remedies. Colic is one of those things that some parents unfortunately just have to deal with. Watching your small baby struggle with gas pain is never fun, so anything you can do to offer the baby some relief is going to be welcomed. You actually don’t have to look very far to find someone who has a colic cure they swear worked well for their child.

Natural remedies for colic include bryonia alba, colocynths, chamomile, magnesia phosphoric, pulsatilla, and many others. The different homeopathic solutions to colic are suitable for a whole range of colic symptoms. However, it is important to have a homoeopathist evaluate your baby for the best homeopathic or natural remedy for the individual colic. For some time many individuals were wary of natural medicine, however given the many positive experiences people have had in addition to few side effects like traditional medicine more and more individuals are turning to this natural medicine and even their babies as well.

Another medical theory relates infant colic to the lactating mother who may be consuming foods that contain unsafe chemicals that trigger off allergies and digestive tract problems in the baby, resulting in colicky episodes. These food elements that may be responsible for causing bloating, gas etc are typically varieties of cruciferous vegetables and other gas-producing products that are passed on to the infant through breast-milk; besides, babies often swallow air when they are being nursed or even when they cry, which further adds to the problem.

Baby colic can appear without a warning causing the baby to cry out in pain and then it will just disappear almost as soon as it appeared. The best treatment for baby colic is believed to be gripe water. Mothers can also hold the baby upright to her body to relieve the infant from the pain to an extent. It is believed that the soothing warmth from the mother’s body soothes the infant’s abdomen where the pain is concentrated.

Colic usually occurs in the evening and some infants have a specific time of the day when they will experience colic pain, typically after a meal, so parents need to be alert to these kinds of episodes and wait again to see if it will recur. Many a time it can be due to gas in the stomach that makes a baby cry for long till it is released (usually by rubbing on the tummy or holding the baby upright and burping the infant). Most babies that have this problem will find relief on passing bowels and releasing the gas towards the end of the job!

Once colic has been diagnosed you should try to identify the cause. If you are breastfeeding avoid foods that are likely to cause gas. Make a note of what you are eating; baby may be intolerant to something in your diet, including dairy products. If the baby is bottle fed your doctor may suggest a change of formula. Don’t overfeed the baby, we all know that bloated feeling when we have overeaten, so why shouldn’t baby feel the same. Try hard not to get stressed, I know this isn’t easy but many experts believe that babies are sensitive to stress around them and react.

MEN ONLY Please. Boob Jobs for women?

This may be the wrong board to post this but I wanted to target men for answers.
Please offer your true feelings on women and boob jobs. Do you love women for we are or do you all prefer Pamela Anderson?
Personally, I am small breasted and would love bigger boobs because I have a lack of selfconfidence but I don’t want anything in my body I’m afraid of. I don’t feel they are safe for breastfeeding or if I may be in a car accident or if my body just rejects them all together.

How do you guys really feel about a woman’s breast size?

I am 69 years old, and I came to realize over 40 years ago, that “men” who judge any female according to breast size, were VERY immature, insecure, and generally unreliable, not only in relationships, but in MOST other conditions of life !!!!
I, personally, prefer smaller breasts, attached to a female who has : INTELLIGENCE, HONESTY, MATURITY, INTEGRITY, and A PLEASANT PERSONALITY !!!
Just my opinion!!!

Calories Burnt Breastfeeding

How many calories do you burn a day breastfeeding?

I’ve heard 900 and 500. I am now 10 weeks postpartum and I don’t feel like I’ve lost weight any faster by breastfeeding though. I’ve always been thin and always watch my calorie intake. I usually have no problem losing weight, but it seems like I keep hitting a plateau. I’ve lost 30lbs since my baby was born, but still want to lose about 20 more.

I’m working out a little, but with it winter time, it’s hard to go for walks with baby and of course it’s difficult to get to the gym as well. But will be able to go back in about 3 weeks when I return to work.

I’m a qualified Nutritionist hun, and I have the books on this, and I can categorically tell you that for a baby this age, it’s 500 a day.

While breastfeeding does help shift some of the baby pounds, the problem is that your body KNOWS you are breastfeeding your baby. What it doesn’t know is that you live down the road from many food outlets and aren’t likely to ever starve. All the while you are breastfeeding, your body will hold onto some of your baby weight just in case you suffer a food shortage and need to use your body fat supplies to feed your baby. Your breasts are also bigger and therefore heavier.
I personally found that I was only able to lose the last chunk of weight once I had stopped breastfeeding.

Pregnant And Breastfeeding Signs

Could I be pregnant while breastfeeding? I don’t have my period yet and I have many signs of pregnancy?

I am still nursing my 11 month old son and I still don’t have my period. For over a week I have been having many signs that make me feel like something is up! I have been feeling waves of nausea, lightheaded very often throughout the day and some fatigue. I also want nothing to do with my morning coffee … I took a pregnancy test at home at night, it came out negative. A blood test also came out negative. I am not sure what to to think. What do others think? Could I still be pregnant with these signs and 2 negative tests.

If you had a negative blood test then I don’t thinkn so. That shows up pretty early – I think if it was too early to say from a blood test you wouldn’t be having symptoms.

But you can get pregnant even if you’re breast feeding, the LAM only works for 6 months. Though some women find it hard to get pregnant while breast feeding others get pregnant quickly.

My baby girl is 15 days old. I’ve been 100% breastfeeding her since she was born. Lately I’ve noticed that when she eats she gets very fussy, acts as if she’s in pain, and has trouble burping. Also she makes these faces like something tastes bad in her mouth almost like acid reflux face. I’ve done some reading online about lactose intolerance in breastfed baby’s and the symptoms she has seems to sound like lactose intolerance. Does anyone have any experience with a BREASTFED lactose intolerant baby of their own? I’m going to give it a few more days and if she keeps up this behavior i’m going to contact my doctor to see what he recommends.

Before you consider something that rare, try looking at the food you are eating.

What you eat can sometimes affect the taste of your milk. Are you eating spicy foods or strongly flavoured foods. Try eating bland foods for a while and see if that makes a difference. A few days perhaps?

Also consider how you smell. Are you using a new scented bodywash or purfume or deodorant? This could also affect the way the baby tastes your milk. Try wearing nothing scented for a while as well.

Let me know how it goes.

7 Month Breastfeeding

7 months loss of interest in breastfeeding?

It is a loss of interest. He is more interested in the environment environment. It keeps spreading and looking around the place. Does this mean that seeks to break or does it complete?

No, most babies do not wean before 12 months. My daughter is 7 months (tomorrow) and I started doing the same thing you described a month ago. It's very frustrating, I know! Try to treatment in a dark room quiet (no TV, radio, etc.) so you can relax and concentrate Nursing. You can also try a nursing cover or blanket in the head and shoulder, but probably will do the same so does my daughter – remove it and flails his arms everywhere! We also know that as they age, are more effective for milk, so what would within 20 minutes on each side and can now take 5, 7, or 10 minutes per side. Sometimes, my daughter "snack" for a few minutes several times instead of one session long treatment. On weekends when I'm home with her, I'll try to nurse her and nap at the same time, it is the best way to take a nurse any longer, We are lying in my bed and 20 to 30 nurses on each side, falling asleep on and off the field. It's a great bonding time and a good excuse for me to take a nap too! :) Keep trying to offer her the breast when hungry eat enough:) Good luck!

Breastfeeding Guidelines

breastfeeding guidelines
hello, I’m breastfeeding my son and trying to do so exclusively for the first 6months,?

have many of you managed this? I know most babies won’t wait til 6months to be weaned, and goverment guidelines suggest by 6 mnths babies should be taking lumpy foods rather than puree, which is, of course, what I shall be starting him on. It’s all very contradictory.

just a couple of things to bear in mind (that havent already been mentioned)

one of the reasons you are not supposed to wean later than 6 months is because that’s when the baby starts to need more Iron than is available from milk

weaning too late can cause speech problems, if babies arent allowed to develop chewing motions then they won’t be able to form certain sounds either

the idea that babies shouldnt be started on solids until 6 months has come about because governments are worried about childhood obesity, but for many people it’s just not practical to wait that long, many babies start to wake up again through the night and want extra feeds, if that starts to happen at about 4 or 5 months, don’t worry about starting on solids, just do it gradually and make sure you introduce only suitable foods

good luck

Foods To Avoid While Breastfeeding

what foods to avoid while breastfeeding?

I am breastfeeding my 2 week old daughter and I have been on pins and needles about what I eat. But I think I am being a little too cautious. What foods should I avoid while breastfeeding? Also, someone told me that you can’t have chocolate while breastfeeding…is this true? I sure hope not because I have been craving chocolate soooo bad for the last week.

You can eat whatever you want.
As long as your baby doesn’t have any sort of allergies there’s no reason to follow any sort of “breastfeeding diet”.

A Closer Look on Daughter’s Fertility

A new research study has found and identified a chemical pathway by which a mother’s smoking before and after pregnancy might reduce her daughter’s fertility by as much as two thirds. As we all know, cigarette smoking during pregnancy is a definite no-no, and has been shown in retrospective studies to affect the fertility of a woman’s offspring. But this would be the first study that attempted explanation of the biology behind this effect, according to the Canadian scientists behind the research. The research was performed by a team from the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto that studied and investigated on the impact of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), a byproduct of smoking, on mouse fertility.

The study included injections of a low dose mixture of PAH to three groups of female mice. One group received PAH before conception and again when they were providing milk for their pups, while one group received PAH only before conception, and the third group received PAH only during lactation. A fourth control group did not receive PAH but were mated at the same time as others. The total amount of PAH given to each mouse over the three-week injection cycle was equivalent to 25 packs of cigarettes, according to researchers. The exposed mice did not have fewer pups in their own litters, but when the researchers investigated on the number of eggs in their female offspring, they found about 70 percent fewer follicles available to produce eggs.

According to the lead researcher Dr. Andrea Jurisicova, the mother (mice in this case), exposed to PAHs—environmental pollutants found in cigarette smoke, car exhaust, smoke produced by fossil fuel combustion, as well as in smoked food—before pregnancy and/or during breastfeeding, but not during pregnancy, can cause a reduction in the number of eggs in the ovaries of their female offspring by two-thirds. This limits the window in which the daughter will be able to reproduce.

The new data provides biological support for epidemiological results, such as the previously observed reduction in fertility among daughters of smoking women. According to Dr. Norman Edelman of the American Lung Association, “if we do our job right and these results get good press thus this data could remind women of what they are doing to their unborn fetuses.” Dr. Amos Grunebaum of New York Weill Cornell Medical Center also added that this is an interesting study, but does not add much, since other studies have also shown similar outcomes. The key point here is that women should quit smoking before they even think of getting pregnant.

Although the findings do not define the length of time between quitting smoking and healthier fertility in offspring, Jurisicova noted that previous studies have shown that women who smoke have better results with “in vitro” fertilization one year after they quit smoking. The mice in the current study conceived up to two weeks after their final PAH injection, which is approximately equivalent to three menstrual cycles in women. More research is still needed for this, but mothers should be aware of the dangers that smoking can bring to their future offspring even after knowing this specific research study.
