When my baby breast-feeds, I know the milk sprays and comes out too fast. We help this a little with positioning and patience, but my other breast lets down as well, and it sprays and drips everywhere making a huge mess on me, my clothes, the baby, and anything in its range. I have to place a drinking glass under the nipple just to contain it – washcloths would just get soaked and I’d go through too many. I measured it once, and it’s almost a quarter of a cup at one feeding.
Does anyone else have this problem? If so, what are some solutions, especially when nursing in public? As if public breast-feeding isn’t bad enough, having my bare breast gushing into a cup makes discretion difficult…
I have a set of Avent breast shells, unused, that you can have.
Word is these work really well (and appear relatively comfortable). I bought these before my first, but never needed them. The box is a little beat up since it’s been stashed in the back of the closet for years.
E-mail me and I’ll pop them in the mail if you want them.

Is it OK to complement breastfeeding with formula?
My son is almost 3 months old and was born 4 weeks early. He just seems hungry all the time though he is breast fed on demand. He tends to sleep through the night quite well, then wakes up at about 7.00am, takes a large breast feed from my partner then fallls asleep until about 10:30am and then is awake almost the entire time until 9:00pm (and apart from minimal cat naps) he almost constantly feeds of her for this time! By the early evening my partner is dry and for almost the first time I gave him formula as he was acting as he was still hungry. He took almost 4 ounces (100mls) before he stopped. My partner has plenty of milk during the night to the point where her bed clothes are wet though she can’t quite keep up with my son’s demands through out the day. Was I right to give him the formula under these conditions as he would not settle down?
I gave my son both and he turned out ok. He was also prem (7 1/2 weeks) He’s a strapping 24 year old now.
Let your little one say it with pride. Made from 100% certified organic cotton, this onesie/bodysuit will show the world that you want the best possible nutrition for your baby. Keeping him warm during the night and allowing his skin to breathe while keeping him cool throughout the day, youre making sure what is protecting him on the outside is as important as whats feeding him on the inside.
During your pregnancy and with a newborn baby at home, sleep is a precious commodity – you need to do everything you can to promote it. Having the right maternity nightwear will certainly make you feel as comfortable as possible when you do get to bed. While it needs to be practical, this does not mean it can’t be desirable and luxurious.
You will find you need the support offered by specially designed maternity sleepwear in the latter stages of your pregnancy. Your bust size increases and the swell of your baby bump makes more restrictive garments uncomfortable. Once your baby has arrived and you need to nurse in both the hospital and at home, the advantages of wearing nightwear specially designed to feed both discreetly and with the required amount of support, is important. I recommend you take time out to be properly fitted and advised by the professionals when making your purchases.
Points to consider when choosing your maternity pyjamas, nighties and camisoles are comfort, support, the use of double layered cotton linings, well designed pleats to enhance your shape and of course practical and easy to open clips to make feeding times as simple as possible. The garment you choose to buy should have shelf support and drop down cups which mean no bunching layers of fabric and draping of bed linen to provide discreet feeding.
There are days when getting out of your nightwear seems to take all day – make sure you have something gorgeous and even glamorous on in case you get caught! Some designer styles incorporate loungewear into their ranges which can double as daywear with all the benefits of breastfeeding lingerie. These may be in the form of comfortable PJ sets with camisoles and matching ? sleeve length tops. There are times when you want to wear something desirable and glamorous – and why not? There are wonderful options out there in maternity nightwear which are as sensual and sophisticated as any designer lingerie. Camisoles lined in silky microfibre, soft lace edgings and with mesh shells to create shape are available in pretty, muted tones. Or for something a little more risqu?, choose from stronger more sensual tones, satin bows and saucy splits on the leg.
Like your quality of sleep, the quality of what you sleep in must be considered. Your body is more prone to temperature fluctuations during your pregnancy. If this is the case for you, try to choose cotton Modal nightwear – its breathable and feels luxurious against your skin. Durability of fabrics must be considered as you will wash your maternity lingerie and garments more frequently than you otherwise would.
Choose carefully, get professionally fitted, look and feel feminine and desirable – and sleep well!

There are so many styles for breastfeeding clothes available, all offering different nursing openings you are sure to find nursing clothes which meets your need. The number of innovative ways to get access to breastfeeding are vast and here are just some of the popular ones that make it easy to feed your baby.
Vertical nursing opening: these breastfeeding tops have two vertical breastfeeding openings which can be accessed by lifting the nursing top’s front layer. The front layer is normally very light which offers its own discretion.
Central nursing opening: one vertical centre opening in the middle which is accessible from either side, through side seams. The double layers in the front are not sewn together. This means that the breastfeeding top retains its shape when the flaps are pulled aside for easy breastfeeding
Double side nursing openings: the nursing top will have a top layer which needs to be lifted to access two large vertical side openings, and these tops have an all around underlayer which means you don’t need to worry about showing any flesh
Cross over: a number of breastfeeding tops and nursing dresses have two panels which crossover on the front which can be lifted on either side to give easy access.
Pull aside neck line: these nursing tops are great as you can get access by pushing the neck line to one side and there is an underlayer which provides access which is discreet to breastfeed. There is nothing fiddly with these nursing tops
Pull down: For these breasfeeding tops you can pull down the neckline and lift the inner layer to get access to feed. The necklines are slightly deeper, but these are compensated by the inner layer
Oversized Armholes: These have worked well on some breastfeeding dresses, but the oversized armholes give chic style and can be accessed by pulling aside the oversized armholes to access nursing openings in the under layer.
Empire opening: This is another popular way to access the openings, as you life the top layer at the empire band (across bottom of breasts) and access the nursing openings
Two overlapping openings: This is a design made popular by a Swedish design and it has a double layer fabric over the bust a. The layer is lifted up and the opening is simply pushed aside with one hand.
As you can see there are so many ways that you can get access for feeding, breastfeeding clothes are available in all styles and designs and all make it easy to feed. The best thing to do it try out those openings which appeal to you and try them out at home, and before you know it you will have managed to get the hang of it. Breastfeeding clothes are designed to make it easy to feed and its important to get nursing clothes which enables you to feed comfortably wherever you are

How do I get my 1 year old daughter to stop breastfeeding?
I still nurse her, only at night to get her to fall asleep. I really want to stop because it’s not comfortable for me, honestly it hurts. And not only that but my husband is really getting on me to stop because he wants my breasts back, he keeps saying I gave them up for a whole year and you were supposed to quit after she turned one….well anyway, I know it’s my body and whatever, but I just wants some advice preferably from someone who has gone through a similar situation. She just won’t quit, she tugs at my shirt and screams uncontrolably until I nurse her at night. HELP!!!!!
Find another routine that works for her at bedtime that does not involve breast feeding. It may cause crying for a few nights, but she’ll get over it fast. Make sure she has a full tummy and plenty of fluids to drink. That’s the best I can do. Don’t forget – as long as she’s safe, fed, clean, dry, and had a drink – crying is okay as long as you check in on her from time to time to give her a sense of security that you are still there but she’s not going to get what she wants by crying. Stay strong!!! By the way – my husband would be the same way

Congratuations if you’ve just found out that you’re pregnant!
You know when you need to start purchasing maternity clothes when you start bursting out of your favourite jeans and they gradually starting falling down your hips!
This is the point where you can either experiment with the various belly fasteners that are currently on the market to try and get more mileage out of your pre-pregnancy jeans, or bite the bullet and make your first maternity investment into pure comfort! Buy a good pair of maternity jeans.
Bootleg, skinny leg, straight leg, wide leg ….. with elasticated waist pull on or non elasticated waist? Which one should I choose?
Maternity jeans have come a long way and now with so many styles around, its often hard to know which style to choose, so lets look at the fundamental basic styles around.
Staying Up
The most important factor when purchasing maternity jeans has to be the ability for them to stay up. I guess, like most maternity clothes, this depends on your shape, or your baby’s shape aka: the bump.
I’ve tried on a whole heap of different maternity jeans and, in my opinion, maternity jeans with the wide jersey fabric stitched onto the maternity jean waistband is the best style to ensure stay-up ability. If you think about it, it makes sense because the jersey fabric pulls up (and sometimes over) the bump, giving something for the maternity jeans to hold on to.
Of course, there are maternity jeans available that only have a small elasticated waistband and these would ensure comfort, ease of pulling on and will stay up pretty good but the waistband will sit just on the bump at mid point of your belly.
If you really hate the look of the ‘pouch’ style look with the jersey panel that pulls up over your belly, then opt for the ‘under belly’ style which look just like non pregnancy jeans and have an internal elasticated system which you can pull in tight for a more snug fit, or release when your belly expands to give more room. The good thing about these maternity jeans, is that they don’t look like maternity jeans at all, and you would be more inclined to wear them again after the birth of your baby, whilst slimming back down to your normal size. The waistband usually sits just under the belly as hipsters and this depends on your size and shape of your maternity bump as to whether they stay up!
Maternity wear is now stylish as well as functional and gone are the days of the wide flowing tent-like garments that try to hide the growing bump. Now days, we welcome the use of elasticated, stretchy fabrics like spandex, elastane and lycra that ensure the fabric can grow with your bump and accentuate your new curves and growing bump. Gorgeous maternity blouses, maternity dresses and maternity tops are all available in beautiful modern prints and styles that will look fantastic paired with a great fitting maternity jean.
The most flattering of all maternity jean styles has to be the bootleg cut. This style really helps to balance the silhouette of weight at the mid point of your belly, with the wider cut at the ankle and gives a really streamlined look that in turn, makes you look slimmer. These days, a whole host of colours are available, the most popular being dark indigo, washed blue and jet black.
If you are lucky enough to carry off this season’s hottest maternity jean style, then try the skinny leg maternity jean. Popular colours include dark indigo, vintage blue, jet black and washed blue.
Straight Leg maternity jeans are a good alternative to the skinny leg maternity jean as they balance out the leg from the thinnest to the widest point, creating a more streamlined, flattering look to the body. Popular colours this season include dark indigo, jet black, vintage blue, washed blue and white.
Maternity jeans, hands down are a pregnant gals godsend when it comes to good maternity wardrobe investment. There are lots of different price points out there, but of course, this depends on your own personal budget. Don’t forget, you will get a lot of mileage out of your maternity jeans for there is a good chance that you will be wearing your maternity jeans well after the birth of your baby until your body shape has returned to normal.

If you’re a new Mom who is nursing your baby you may be nervous about doing so in public.
Or perhaps you are disturbed by media reports of women who are harassed for breastfeeding in public and are considering pumping your milk to give your baby when you leave home.
Here are some tips for discreet breastfeeding that have worked for many Moms. Hopefully they will help you feel more comfortable nursing in public so you can avoid the inconvenience of pumping and preparing bottles.
1) Before you have your baby, attend a breastfeeding support group meeting.
Unfortunately in our society that gives lip service to the benefits of breastfeeding, it is still rare to see Moms nursing in public, and so most of us grow up having our own babies never having seen another woman nurse.
Going to an meeting and seeing how other Moms nurse their babies discreetly and confidently can boost your own confidence. They can also share with you tips that will make nursing in public easier for you.
2) Invest in a baby sling.
These are wonderful for making life with a baby easier all around, but one thing they’re great for is discreet breastfeeding. I can’t count the times someone approached me in a store and commented on my baby having no idea that s/he was latched on and nursing! The fabric of the sling can be adjusted to come up over the baby’s head (yet most babies don’t mind this like they do a blanket), or you can use the extra fabric on the “tail” to cover baby.
3) After your baby is born, practice nursing in front of a mirror or a friend to perfect your technique.
Once you and baby are getting to be old pros at the latch on, you can most likely do so in just a couple of seconds.
4) Nurse at the first signs of hunger.
A nursing baby generally draws less attention than a screaming one! So latch your baby on as soon as you notice that s/he is hungry… rooting, sucking on fist, grimacing face, etc. A crying baby also makes you nervous and you and baby may take longer to get latched on comfortably.
5) Try turning your body away while you latch on.
If you’re sitting at a table in a restaurant, simply turn your body away from the table briefly while you latch baby on, then resume your normal position.
6) Try nursing clothes.
These are designed to cover your belly for more discreet breastfeeding. Or simply wear a thin top under a cardigan or other shirt. You can also make your own nursing top by cutting slits in a tank and wearing it under another shirt. And always pull up your shirt from the bottom instead of unbuttoning from the top to nurse.
7) Bring a book or large purse to set in your lap to camouflage.
Your diaper bag would also work. Set it in front of baby on your knees while you latch baby on. Or hold a book so that your baby’s head and your breast are out of view.
And lastly…
Be confident!
You are doing something that is best for you and baby and that billions of women all over the world for thousands of years have done. Be proud of yourself and give passersby a warm smile. You’d be surprised how often people will smile back or even approach with a commendation or anecdote about their own children.
Enjoy nursing your baby!
