Breast is best – says UNICEF!
AN initiative to encourage more mums to breastfeed has earned Yeovil District Hospital recognition from UNICEF. UNICEF Indonesia: post-quake breastfeeding
People have asked this question, but the answers are always different than what my wife and I want to know.
My wife and I know that breastfeeding is best for our baby…and we know that longer is better for our baby’s health. We know what la Leche League, the WHO, UNICEF, the AAP, etc. recommend about breastfeeding (for 6 ms, 1 yr, 2 yrs, etc).
What we want to know is how long is it safe to keep breastfeeding *exclusively*? When does a baby start to *need* solid food? And, why?
Like, does the baby need food just to get used to eating food, or does the baby need food for iron, vitamins, etc? Is it safe to *exclusively* breastfeed to 9ms, 1 yr, etc?
Thanks for any good links and advice.
I think it depends mostly on your baby and his/her appetite. Some people bf exclusively for up to a year. I introduced solids to my son at 4 months bc he had an unrelenting appetite. I breastfed for 13 months along with solids and had to stop when I was barely hanging on to 100 pounds (at 5’6).
To answer your question, I think that solids should be introduced by 9 months. Your baby needs to learn to chew and eat and there is nothing wrong with introducing solids as long as you are maintaining the same amount of breastfeeding.
After two days, I’ve decided to give up breastfeeding. If there is this much pain in 2 days and I’m told it doesn’t let up until 6 weeks, there is just no way in hell I can continue. I even tried to pump a little bit and after two little quick “pumps” I am in agony. There isn’t even a chance of me getting milk out. Which brings me to my question. When I finally do produce milk, I am going to try to pump again. When do women produce the milk? I know it takes longer and the supply is less when you aren’t already pumping/feeding but it will still come regardless right? And was it natures sick joke to intend for you to breastfeed but then only supply you with a few drops of some sticky yellow stuff that barely comes out? Why can’t they just give us milk in there in the beginning?
IT DOESN’T LAST 6 WEEKS. It lasts about 2 if you are having your baby latch on correctly. The baby will nurse often for 6 weeks however.
your milk isn’t in yet completely. Your supply isn’t well-established until week 4.
That sticky yellow stuff is colostrum- and is very, very important to baby’s development- by tomorrow, your milk would have come in- it happens in the first few days after giving birth.
With our first- I had a lot of issue- but all of those came from me- I didn’t know what to expect. The soreness lasted a week and then leveled off. The milk came in and most of my issues disappeared- except being tired which all new mommies experience.
Keep nursing- no bottles, no formula- your milk will come in faster.

According to the World Health Organization, mothers should breastfeed their children until they are 2 years. Obviously this is not possible for all couples (chest pain, adoption etc), but the North American partner to stop breastfeeding bad soon, practical reasons (to return to work, because it is difficult to work around the schedule, etc)? I'm not asking for personal reasons, curiosity a little more, because until recently, I thought it was supposed to wean their children from 9 months – 12 months. (See links: http://www.kathydettwyler.org/detwean.html, http://www.lalecheleague.org/)
There are some among us here who are not weaned at 9-12 months. I am a nurse and a 3 years 8 months, at the same time. Cosleep also with my children, diapers fabric, and my youngest son in my body much. Oh, and we're vegetarians! I know I'm not the norm, but because most of the mothers I meet that I am a wakko species – but in reality I'm just a normal girl. I formula fed and in bed / park, and all that are used to seeing. It happens that I think many Americans are "convenience" parenting, and that many mothers give up or even trying to breastfeed simply because they consider it "very difficult." Am agree that it can be difficult, I had questions at first, but has sought help from a lactation consultant before giving up. I think people try to "train" their children, and transform them into "self" long before people are ready. From my experience, a child who has actually met a real confidence and independence is completely different from a restriction.

Malnutrition: When people do not get the food they need, they lose the ability to grow to normal adult height and ofen suffer from many preventable illnesses. Not eating healthily can affect brain function and internal bodily function, inculding that of the heart, lungs, kidneys and bowels.
Access to safe water: In many countries, clean water is in low supply. Take India, for example. The river Ganges is one of their main sources of water, yet it is so polluted just getting in it can cause so much harm to a human, they can contract fatal diseases. If people cannot access cleaner water and if we as a global community don’t do something about it, there won’t be any clean water to drink, causing us all to suffer.
Access to health services: Simply put, many minor things get much worse if not treated. Take a toothache for example. Often, a toothache is caused by an infection which could be treated with a simple antibiotic. However, without access to doctors and dentists, this disease could spread throughout the entire body, causing severe pain and eventually death. Also, with education, many people can leasrn what is causing illnesses, such as AIDS and work to prevent themselves or their children from contracting them.
Population growth rate: Scientists estimate that the earth can safely support 5 billion people. We currently have close to 7 billion people. Also, if everyone else in the world started to consume the way Americans do, it would take three earths to support these habits. With an alarmingly high consumption rate and a population that is increasing ever more quickly, the earth could face severe problems.
Just type in those words in a search engine and you can find many more sources. I listed a few.

carl…..so true
it was just the reason for the complaint….breaking the ‘no food or drink’ rule
tell me about it…..did you read the link?
why do you think it is there if not to open and read….?
hypocrit…..but is it breaking the ‘no food or drink rule’ that is the question?
I can understand some guys being uncomfortable with it, but really it doesn’t bother me. I haven’t seen that for a long time. I remember being wee and a neighbour fed her kid in front of me and I was quite shocked, but interested (not like that). I guess exposure to nature is all that people need.
It’s like the ‘gays kissing in public’ argument. If people got used to it and stopped thinking about other things, then it wouldn’t be an issue.
Men can walk about sweating with no shirt and it’s ok, but women somehow have to cover up even when feeding a baby. It’s all a bit daft really.
edit. well if someone was a jobsworth, then technically it was breaking the rule on both counts of food and drink. But that would have to be a total jerk.

Need to know the facts of breastfeeding please!!!?
my birthday is about to come and i wanted to know if its ok to drink one dark beer on my birthday but i dont want to have any problems with doing that i need to know what are the pro’s and con’s please help!
Very little alcohol comes out in the milk. Nursing mothers can drink some alcohol and continue breastfeeding as she normally does. Prohibiting alcohol is another way we make life unnecessarily restrictive for nursing mothers.
Alcohol (ethanol) passes quickly into breast milk and may reach levels equivalent to or higher than the mother’s alcohol blood level (which is not very much). However, alcohol is not “trapped” in breast milk and will return into the mother’s bloodstream as the mother’s alcohol blood level decreases.
Beer contains a polysaccharide from barley which can stimulate prolactin secretion and may enhance the production of milk. The polysaccharide is also found in non-alcoholic beer, and the effect on prolactin can also be induced by non-alcoholic beer.
So go on and have your one beer and don’t worry about it. If it really concerns you then nurse your baby right before and weight 2-3 hours to nurse again and your baby won’t get a lick of that beer!

How much ounces of milk does a newborn& baby drink throughout the whole day?
im almost due andn i want to breastfeed however breastfeeding will be like 1 once a day.. i want to try and punmp into a bottle. how many ounces does a baby drink & am i better off just formula feeding if i dont want the brest to mouth. I have an evenflo single pump electric..will this help me along
Doctors will tell you it is on a demand scedual.
My daughter drinks anywhere from 3-6oz every 4 or 5 hours.
It will depend on how much your child wants too eat and how often.
After you get used to how much he eats is when you will most likely be able to predict how much to pump.
but pumping really hurts.
i was better off formula feeding.
it is easier, less pain, just as healthy, and you actually know how much the baby is consumeing.

It’s been realised that the previous charts made women overfeed their children when formula feeding, and caused health professionals to advise supplementing or stopping breastfeeding due to below average weight gain.
If you stopped breastfeeding because your baby dropped centiles on the old charts, how do you think you would feel now that the charts have been revised?
An interesting topic.
Thankyou for your viewpoints.
I looked at the chart and if you notice the range is much larger than it used to be as well. My son was 20lbs (about 9kg) at 4 months and that was way, way off the old charts -though it is still off the new charts if you look at the percentiles. Just as many doctors sabotaged breastfeeding by saying the baby was overweight and recommending strict schedules or weaning as well.
The old charts were clearly inaccurate as they were based on formula-fed babies that were fed formula that has long since been banned and babies were started on cereal and other foods as early as 4 weeks. This doesn’t reflect normal healthy babies.

Have any other breastfeeding mothers who have also been on the mini pill had any problems?
I started taking the mini pill around a month ago. I have been exclusively breastfeeding for 6 months, but found around 2/3 weeks ago, that my daughter was not getting enough milk anymore, and that my let down was taking AGES to happen, whereas before it took literally seconds. Also, one breast just will NOT let down, no matter how much she nurses, until she has had the other breast.
I’ve upped the amount of solids I’ve been giving her, whilst not decreasing any breast feeds, but still find I have this problem.
Now I’m thinking that it has something to do with taking the pill, and wondered if anyone else had experienced this problem? My daughter is dipping on her weight growth chart and I’m worrying now…
here’s what I found on about.com
Birth control pills that use only progestin are often called “mini-pills.” They can be very effective as long as you take the pills at the same time each day or night. These pills are considered safe to take while nursing. Some of the progestin does cross over into breast milk, but no harmful effects have been seen. Some mothers see an increase in their milk supply while using this method, while most see no difference, and a few will see a decrease. Other methods using only progestin include Depo-Provera and Norplant.
My son is 20 months old and still addicted to breastfeeding. We’re ttc #2 and having no luck and I’m convinced the BF is affecting this (even though my period has returned).
I had thought he’d wean himself off but he’s showing no signs of doing so, in fact he’s breastfeeding more and more at the moment – he’s had about 6 feeds today! He tugs on my top and screams and cries if I deny him a feed and usually after about 10 mins of screaming I have to give in as my nerves are raw.
I’ve tried offering him formula or cows milk (sometimes with milkshake powder) but he doesn’t want it.
He co-sleeps with us and does sometimes night-feed when he wakes up. He doesn’t eat his solids very well either, which often leaves him hungry for breastmilk.
Any advice on what I should do? Oh and I don’t want opinions like “Breastfeeding at 20 mos is disgusting” or “He shouldn’t co-sleep with you”, these are our lifestyle choices, thanks.
I would keep offering him other things to drink. Have you tried Nuby cups. they are really good for breastfed babies…the top is all silicone and feels good on their face (almost like mommy I think). Can he drink from a straw yet? once my son was able to drink from a Nuby cup and a straw it was easier to tell him “no..how about a juice box instead” or “how about some strawberry milk”. I also keep water bottles with a sport top on them around the house…he drinks from those too. try telling him that he has to eat a certain amount before he can nurse( finish you sandwich, then you can nurse) and stick to it.
The heck with all those who say extended feeding is gross or wrong. My son is 33 months old and climbing on me to nurse just this afternoon. I am going to get down and dirty about weaning him after the big kids go back to school. I actually had him almost weaned in June, but he regressed after his speech got better. He has only stopped nursing at night for a few months…he still climbs into bed to snuggle though. Sometimes he will literally LOOK down my shirt and take a deep breath ( like we would when we walked into a bakery or something) then run off to play. He had a rough couple of winters. About 2-3 times each winter he has gotten a nasty tummy bug and stopped eating for like 10 days. the last time he got sick he could not hold down water or gingerale, but he did not throw up breastmilk. The doctor said that it was great…not only did he get fluids, but he got protein and all the nutrients that gatorade and IV hydration do not have (and comfort)
Why do you think so few women nurse thier babies for the minimum of 1 year that is recommended by the AAP?
I’ve noticed that many people are asking about formula and their babies are fairly young. If the current recommendation by the AAP is 1 year MINIMUM (the World Health Organization recommends 2 years minimum) and studies show that less then 1% of women in the world are actually incapable of breastfeeding…. Why are the percentages of mothers who formula feed so high??
I think it’s lack of education about resolving and avoiding breastfeeding problems. Plus, we’ve created a society of bottle feeders. We give little girls dolls with bottles and many breastfeeding women don’t even feel comfortable breastfeeding in public because our societies are so ignorant sometimes.
I think some people actually think it’s more normal to formula feed. They say that the more educated a woman the longer she’ll breastfeed. So I think it has to do with intelligence level also. But I also know some very intelligent women who had very busy schedules and did a combo of breastfeeding and formula feeding after exclusively breastfeeding for 6 months. This is better then not doing it at all or giving up after a couple of weeks.
MaximsNewsNetwork: HAITI: WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION DELIVERS AID (WHO)
The longstanding debate over the optimal duration of exclusive breastfeeding has centered on the so-called “weanling’s dilemma” in developing countries: the choice between the known protective effect of exclusive breastfeeding against infectious morbidity and the (theoretical) insufficiency of breast milk alone to satisfy the infant’s energy and micronutrient requirements beyond 4 months of age. …
I am currently fully breastfeeding but have to stop due to meds I need to be put on (I just was diagnosed with RA). I am so heartbroken. I am on WIC but recieve no formula because I am breastfeeding. I have 2 months worth of checks left, does WIC allow you to change like that and turn in unused checks in this kind of event. I cannot afford the formula, and I did have to put him on Soy formula for a week when he was a newborn because my milk didn’t come in yet. He was getting sick off regular formula. How do you get similac soy formula, if possible? I am in Florida.
Thank you!
To get the Soy formula, you will probably have to have a note from the doctor so that WIC knows it is a medical necessity. I don’t know if they will exchange the checks or not. Your best bet is to contact your WIC office as soon as possible.

Who says that nursing on demand day and night is unhealthy?
I am so proud of myself!!!
My son is 6 months old and I just got home from his 6 month checkup and I am just so proud! He is off the charts for height 28.5 inches and he’s around the 80th for weight.
I have held back on feeding him solids… just very minimally and tried to stick with baby-led weaning where he feeds himself. My kid’s pediatrician loved to hear that I haven’t been giving him baby cereal. He loved to hear that I am nursing him on demand day and night. I mean, how can ANYONE say that it’s unhealthy? My kid is thriving!
Ok, this isn’t so much of a question as it is a big fat brag but I think I deserve to brag. Breastfeeding has been hard work but man, I am just so glad I can hold up my son and say “LOOK AT WHAT I GREW!” I know he isn’t a prize cabbage… it’s better than that. lol
Thanks so much guys!!!!!
And to the haters… whatevs! You just don’t get it!
I breastfed on demand as well and my son is off the charts too. When I’m hungry I eat, what’s the difference I say.
Congrats on your health, happy, adorable baby boy!
do you think that pictures of a woman breastfeeding is obscene?
how about a woman breastfeeding in a restaurant? I ask these because facebook has banned pictures of women breastfeeding calling them obscene. and a woman was just told to stop breastfeeding in a local restaurant because people were “losing their appetites”. your thoughts?
There is nothing wrong with it. A child has to eat for heaven’s sake. If people lose their appetites over that, then they have issues. Would they prefer if a cow came up to the table and the baby latched on? People are stupid.
Hi, my son is almost 2 months old and I have a lot of anxiety about nursing him in public. I don’t know how to nurse him without using the Boppy. I lay him on the boppy and use the cross cradle hold to feed him. I feel very nervous about having to feed him while we are out and about without the boppy. I see other mothers nursing their babies in public without boppies but I can’t seem to figure out how to do it. Can someone give me so advice about how to wean myself from using the boppy?
Thanks
Honestly, it’s all about your comfort. If you need a boppy pillow, you could try crossing your legs, (ankle on knee) and placing a receiving blanket in your lap. This would provide enough support for baby and you could then nurse.
But before you take this to the mall, you should really do it at home in every chair in your house.
Also, if you have a really great sling, you can place baby in that, put blanket over the shoulder and nurse in complete privacy, without sitting down at all.
Most parents agree that breastfeeding is the best way to feed a baby. And even if your partner will do the same outlet, there are a number of ways you can participate to make it a pleasant experience all.
Initiate breastfeeding
We are big believers in breastfeeding and encourage you to do everything we can to support mom. The first meal in particular, can be a challenge that milk can not come immediately. The baby may not know what to do and the mother, if she has not breastfed before, may be just as lost.
These are beginners guide to breastfeeding:
* The mother is usually the chest with the thumb on top and below of the fingers chest. The areola, the dark circle of skin surrounding the nipple should be free to enter the baby's mouth. * Keep on the mother encourages the baby to suck the nipple touching the baby's lips. Once the baby's jaw is around the nipple, you need to hold the baby close to her. This push the breast and allows the child to begin nursing. * The areola should be completely in the baby's mouth. The baby's lips should pout in the chest instead of being shot in. If the baby is well blocked and drinking, swallowing sounds will be heard. * In case of concerns about baby's breath, the mother can press chest, near the baby's nose to facilitate breathing. * Whichever position the mother chooses, must ensure that there is no restriction the baby's head or neck.
Why, if my husband's chest?
As the United States Department of Health and Human Services, here are some of the many reasons your baby breast milk should be:
* Breast milk is the most complete nutrition for children. Breast milk contains the right amount of fat, sugar, water and protein is necessary for a baby's growth and development. Most babies is easier to digest breast milk that are formed. * There are risks to the health of your baby if her husband does not breastfeed. Breast milk containing agents (called antibodies) to help protect babies against bacteria and viruses. Babies who are exclusively breastfed for 6 months are more likely to develop a wide range of infections and diseases such as ear infections, diarrhea and respiratory diseases. They are sick more often and more doctors visit. Babies who are breastfed have a position of 21% higher rate of neonatal mortality in the U.S. * Breastfeeding reduces the risk food breast cancer and ovarian and, possibly, the risk of hip fractures and osteoporosis after menopause * Breastfed babies score higher on IQ tests in children, especially babies born prematurely * Nursing consume more calories, making it easier for your spouse to lose kilos of pregnancy. It also helps the uterus return to its original size and reduce the bleeding, she might have postpartum. * Breastfeeding can help your spouse with respect to your baby. Physical contact is important for newborns and can help them feel more secure, warm and comforted.
Is it safe for the mother to take medication for breastfeeding?
Always consult your doctor before your spouse begins to take drugs. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, most of medicines pass into breast milk in small amounts. If you take medication for a chronic condition like hypertension, diabetes or asthma, medications may have been studied in nursing women, should be able to find information to help them make an informed decision with your doctor.
New drugs and medicines for rare diseases may have less information available.
How long should my spouse breastfeed?
The United States Department of Health and Human Services, babies should be breastfed – there is no formula – for the first six months of life. The longer a mother and baby breastfeeds, the greater will the benefits are for both the mother and baby. Ideally, babies should receive breast milk during the first year of life, or as much as you want for your baby. Solid foods can be added to baby food for the duration of breastfeeding, when your baby is six months old.
At least during the first six months, breastfed babies do not need supplemental water, juice or other liquids (such as the United States Department of Health and Human Services). They may interfere milk production with your spouse if they are introduced during this period. One of the best things that only mothers can do is to breastfeed your baby for as long as possible.

Why do so many parents feel the need to judge other parents?
I see it all the time here. Parents judging others for breastfeeding, or not breastfeeding, circumcising or not circumcising, homeschooling or public schooling, this discipline or that discipline, the list goes on and on.
Don’t most parents make these choices with the best interest of the child at heart? So, isn’t that what is more important? Why come off so judgmental toward other who have a different view point, when you could kindly suggest your ideas, and then leave it at that?
Because some people will always think they are the perfect parents and that everyone else should bow down to their authority.

I do! I am all for breastfeeding and have breastfed my own child. But I wasn’t all about flaunting it for show and can’t even imagine posting pictures of my exposed boob on the internet. A boob is a boob and if you show it in public, its public nudity.
Fifi K, I never breastfed in public. I was very discreet about it. I did it in the privacy of my own home and would pump and bring bottles for when I was out in public. Thats just me, but it would just feel wrong whipping out my boob in public for the world to see. I think its fine if a woman does it in public as long as she covers up with a blanket.
I belong to that facebook group in protest of the ban.
I posted a photo.
It did not show any nipple.
It was however, flagged and removed.

By reading this article, you will find out how to lose your pregnancy weight while you are breastfeeding. The key to weight loss for anyone is building lean muscle and burning fat. Many mothers don’t realize that cutting calories doesn’t always result in losing weight. Some women get bad hunger pains and start eating all the wrong foods which spirals them down the wrong path, and in the worst case quitting. You can still eat and lose weight. You don’t have to worry about compromising your breast milk quality or supply in the process.
Has breastfeeding helped you lose your pregnancy weight like you had expected? Your body burns about 500 calories a day when it takes the nutrients you eat from your food and putting it into breast milk. What I mean by that is that when you are pregnant, your body builds up extra fat stores to help in this process. This is what I like to call “baby fat”. Breastfeeding moms only have to eat about 300-500 additional calories above their pre-pregnancy baseline needs every day because of these fat stores. When you eat this recommended amount of additional calories and are exclusively breastfeeding, your body will get the additional calories it needs from the fat stores. Therefore, you should experience a slow and steady weight loss toward your pre-pregnancy weight just by breastfeeding.
Losing fat is more important than losing pounds. Many of my patient’s moms are obsessed with losing a specific number of pounds. I tell them it’s not the number of pounds that count, more importantly it’s the amount of fat loss. Fat is lost when the body uses up more calories than it takes in. Everyone has what we call a basal metabolic rate, or commonly referred to as a “metabolism”. This is basically the amount of calories your body burns at rest. The main controller of this rate is the amount of lean muscle your body has. So one of the key ingredients to weight loss, is building up lean muscle tissue. You can do this through strength training. Strength training can be lifting weights, using your body weight, or using stretch bands…anything to make the muscles work.
Another thing you can do to burn more calories is cardio. Don’t start frowning yet. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go running outside or on a treadmill, but you can if you want. All you have to do is be more active than usual for 30-60 minutes a day, 3-5 days a week. It doesn’t have to be done all at once either. You can break it up into chunks of 10-15 minutes if you have to. Get creative with it. Park your car at the far end of the lot instead of in front of the door. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Take the baby in a stroll at the park or around the block. Walking is an excellent and simple way to burn calories. Remember that slow and steady is the key to success. So start by doing a little bit of cardio each day and then the next week do a little more. Next thing you know, your doing 1 hour of cardio straight for 5 days a week. Imagine how many calories that burns!!
Losing weight while breastfeeding is not as simple as just eating less. Many breastfeeding mothers who don’t lose weight are not eating enough calories. They have the intentions of losing weight, but they are not meeting their breastfeeding needs. This ultimately leads to frustration. The problem with cutting calories is that if you cut too much, your body goes into “starvation mode” and it holds onto fat because it doesn’t think it’s going to get enough calories. Many times, just simply eating mere 300-500 calories more can get you over the hump and into the fat-burning path back to your pre-pregnancy weight. A friend of mine recently had a baby and unfortunately ran into this same problem of not eating enough. She wanted to lose weight and though if she ate less then the weight should come off because she’s breastfeeding, but it didn’t. She asked for some advice and come to find out she was eating twice a day and about 800 calories a day. I told her she wasn’t eating enough. She said I was crazy. Then I told her to eat at least 1500 calories a day and adjust the calories from there. She told me I didn’t know what I was talking about. I eventually convinced her to take my advice. Low and behold the weight started coming off in no time!!
Eating 1 or 2 meals a day can cause starvation as well. When you’re in starvation mode, your body slows down its metabolic rate, and that’s why many times people are feeling like they have no energy and are tired all the time. When you are tired you eat more as well because you have more cravings.
Eating throughout the day will stop food cravings which cause so many people to quit. This is another one of the biggest reasons post-pregnancy mothers don’t lose weight and get discouraged. When you go for long periods of time in between meals, your blood sugar levels drop. When they are low, your body starts to get cravings for quick supplies of sugar. Of course, these are all the bad things for anyone trying to lose weight…cookies, chips, fried food, etc. A simple solution is to eat every 3-4 hours, just like your baby. A great rule of thumb is to eat roughly 300 calories (doesn’t have to be exact) and drink 8 ounces of fluids after every feeding. Eat a balance of carbohydrates (fruits/veggies/whole grains) and proteins (beans/nuts/seeds/lean meats/low fat dairy) at each meal or snack.
The quality and supply of your breast milk does not suffer if you do the right things. As long as you are eating and drinking fluids throughout the day your body will signal to continue making breast milk. The supply goes dry when you start cutting back too much on the amount of food and fluids you take in.
Apply what you learned here and you won’t compromise the amount or quality of your breast milk. You don’t have to diet to lose weight and you can still prevent hunger pains. The key to maintained weight loss doesn’t come from eating fewer calories, but from burning fat and by building lean muscle. If you follow these simple tips, you can start losing your pregnancy weight and be back in those pre-pregnancy clothes in no time.
