Breastfeeding in Public – Practical Tips for New Mums

The advice on breastfeeding seems to flow thick and fast. Please forgive the pun. Some advice is often quite prescriptive; particularly to new mothers in the beginning, from well intentioned and busy midwives. Often the best advice comes from other Mums who have been there recently and learnt from their experience. Forums such as ‘mumsnet’ are often invaluable sources of frank and honest advice. If you read just some of the posts, the main thread of advice that comes through is; relax, take the prescriptive advice with a pinch of salt, let baby take the lead a bit and don’t get stress about it! After all, the alternative is far from the end of the world!

It is important to know that babies are individuals. They may have slightly different feeding patterns, or yours may have a bigger appetite than others! Newborns can cluster feed in the evenings. Feeding all night for the first few weeks doesn’t mean they’ve got night and day mixed up and is actually not to bad a situation, because night is when levels of hormones are higher and it helps get breastfeeding established. Also, wear a sleeping bra, but make sure it isn’t too tight or you could end up with mastitis.

One of the main initial problems women encounter when breastfeeding is ‘latching on’. There are many sources of advice on this, not least your midwife, and it is wise to establish that the baby is latched on properly and is getting milk before you leave the hospital. If you are unsure what you are doing is working, don’t be afraid to get a second opinion.  Another great source of advice about latching on is on the Dr Jack Newman website.

Then comes the issue of feeding in public. After all, baby does not know when you are meeting a friend for coffee or sat in the doctor’s waiting room waiting for a check up. This can be another substantial source of anxiety and another reason why mums choose to stop early on.

This need not be the case though. It is virtually impossible to organize your life around feeding times and therefore it is best to be more relaxed about it and just be prepared.  There are many products available that can assist mums (and their babies) to gain confidence in the early days of breastfeeding in public. The breastfeeding cover (or apron) is one such product. These covers can work well throughout your days of breastfeeding in public, particularly as baby gets older and is more prone to distraction. The breastfeeding cover / apron creates a nice cocooned environment for you both.  This way, if you do feel a little self conscious when breastfeeding in public, you can cover up using an apron.  Many mothers use cloths but this tends to not be as comfortable for the baby, and as a mother, you lose eye contact with the baby and can’t check as easily whether they are feeding well.

Advice comes from all directions when you are a new mum, and much of it seems contradictory.  It can be a great strain when you are worried about doing the right thing.  Probably the best advice is to listen but in the end, judge what seems to be right for your baby.

Returning To Work Breastfeeding

returning to work breastfeeding
I’m breastfeeding how do I start a supply for returning to work?

I have a pump I’m just not sure how to start a supply for work without my baby missing his feeding. When I do pump I only get 3 – 3 1/2 oz. Is that enough?
He’ll be 2 months tomorrow and I go back to work 3/11/07

Usually 1/2 a bottle should be enough per feed. just depends on how hungry he/she is.
Breast milk can be frozen, then re-heated for use.
Make up a few of these for future feeds.

Preparing For Breastfeeding During Pregnancy

It was good …. and I'm overwhelmed .. Is it true?

I have a baby of 18 weeks of age. My postpartum hemorrhage was stopped just before my 6 weeks follow-up appointment. My husband and I were using condoms during sex for protection and not have sex until he was about 2 months after delivery. I am also breastfeeding. I had not had my time and thought it was because of breastfeeding. I feel strange lately and still had a pregnancy test box used to know she was pregnant with my daughter a year ago. Well last night I tried it and be positive! I'm not so sure how feel at this time. I have a month and 4 years of full-time job ….. a child is a blessing, but I was not prepared for that. Could the test is accurate? How in the world that the doctor is able to say how far along I am what I never had a period?

They will do a transvaginal u / s measured baby. You can be overcome but everything happens for a reason and after the collision, I'm sure you'll do well with the two babies, even if they are near the age. Good luck!

Breastfeeding Implants

Breastfeeding after breast implants?

We just discovered she is pregnant. YAY! However, it is very early and we have not had the best of luck and hope it all works. I had a breast augmentation through the nipple in July 2008. I wonder if anyone else had similar or even is able to breastfeed. I breastfed my first two children and I would do this time, but I'm worried I can not. Thank you for experienced advice! :)

As the implant under the muscle can continue breatfeed. I had mine done in March 2010, she became pregnant in early August, and I expected in late April, I asked the plastic surgeon and he said he would be able, and my dr said the same. If your implands are above the muscle, I'm not sure, try googleing, and morning call and ask your dr.

Breastfeeding Engorgement Relief

Congestion relief? HELP!?

I gave birth on Friday morning and now my breasts are swollen. I'm not breastfeeding, pump is not working and my daughter can not block on my chest. We went to the formula and now I'm in extreme pain .. someone please help?! I need some advice!

You are four days after birth, so that the milk is coming is very normal to be so congested. If you are thinking about and want to give her milk to her beautiful baby, soak your breasts in a basin of hot water, use warm compresses or take a hot shower to get the blood flowing into the region and help soften your breasts. This will lock pumping or easier. If you do not want to nurse or pump, then you need to use cold compresses to the breasts, as you would in any another area of inflammation. The bags of frozen peas great job to fit your shape. You can also use pieces of cabbage in your bra ….. strange, but help. However, ibuprofen may help relieve inflammation.

Breast Problems Breastfeeding

breast problems breastfeeding
did anyone have problems breastfeeding?

im very close to my due date and im afraid that i may have trouble breastfeeding. i have a couple of friend that had trouble with it, so that is worrying me. im also not to sure about breastfeeding because, (this may sound funny but) the only way my breast have been touched or handled is in a sexual way, so im not sure if i can get in the mind set of having them be a nurturing thing. has anyone else felt this way?

i wasn’t able to breastfeed. partly because i really wasn’t 100% for sure i wanted to and then i had a very hard time figuring out how to do it properly, and i ended up scabbing up and it got too painful. i think the reason i didn’t know 100% was because i didn’t respond to the thought of them being used to nurture. but i’m on board with it now on my second pregnancy =)

Breastfeeding By Pumping Only

breastfeeding only at night?

my son is 4 months old and i have been nursing him exclusively, i returned to work about a month ago to make ends meet. if i could i would stay home with him but its not an options. anyway, he gets a bottle while i’m at work and sometimes he gets formula.
about a week ago he started refusing to nurse during the day, he will only nurse at night, so during the day he now gets a bottle of formula which he has to hold all by myself hence his independence… he wont let us hold it he gets mad. but my question is, is there a way i can train my body to only produce milk at night? i want to keep nursing him and he prefers bottle in the day and nursing at night. I just don’t want to have to pump during the day. and has anyone else heard of babies doing this? He is also starting to teeth idk if that means anything either.

That should be fine. I asked my lactation consultant the exact same question. She said as long as I breastfeed at least 3-4 times a night I shouldn’t have any problems. I have to wake my daughter up to feed or just pump at night when she sleeps through. I just use the pumped milk in a bottle the next day. Your supply will stay up during the normal times you nurse. But eventually you will lose most of it during the daytime. I did this for 3 months.

Bottle Feeding Vs Breastfeeding

The debate has raged for years. Breastfeeding vs Bottle feeding. Which is better? – Well, I guess it’s only raged for the last 50 or 60 years, since they invented baby formula. There are lots of arguments for both side, dealing with nutrition for baby, health for mom, bonding, and a ton of other things… but here’s one thing that’s not talked about as often as it should be: breastfeeding and weight loss.

No, not for the baby. Breastfed babies are generally larger than their bottle fed brethren. But that’s not the point  - this is weight loss for the mom! Every mom wonders if that extra baby weight from the pregnancy will ever go away (so they can fit into their old jeans again). So let’s compare bottle feeding with breastfeeding and weight loss.

Let’s start with bottle feeding and it’s affect on the mother. This one is pretty simple… the mom holds up the bottle for the baby for the first few months, which does burn some calories, but not much. I guess you could count the frequent waking in the middle of the night and walking down the stairs to mix up the bottle as exercise – but that’s probably affecting sleep more than anything. Then you have to take into account that in most family who bottle feed, there is at least a second person who does the job half of the time (the Dad), thus removing any calorie burning effects that might have been gained by the mother.

Now let’s talk about breastfeeding and weight loss. It has been shown that breastfeeding can burn up to 600 calories per day! That’s the equivalent of two hours of intense aerobic workouts a day. That’s pretty awesome.

There are also reports that Mothers who breastfeed more frequently lose weight faster than mothers who nurse less often, and mothers who nurse for shorter periods of time tend to lose weight more slowly than mothers who nurse longer. So it’s entirely possible that if you breastfeed you’ll be able to eat more than you ever could before and still lose weight!

Why is that? Because breastfeeding and weight loss go hand in hand! Really though, it’s because you are feeding two people and you’re body has to work pretty hard to make the milk and make enough of it to support an entirely separate human being – that’s growing like a freakin’ weed.

So if you want to lose weight and keep it off after pregnancy – stick with breastfeeding.

Safe Why For Breastfeeding (Most Important Tips)

Below are some tips I wrote out for a friend of mine when Betty was about one. You would think I might have learned from some of these experiences. However, in the last couple of months I have often donned t-shirts with at least one (if not two) wet patches on the front, have had breastpads wriggling their way up and out of my top at the most inopportune moments, and have had milk spraying out across the room in front a very bemused Betty and an embarrassed neighbour. However, that dreaded bloody breastpump is still safely packed away at the back of a cupboard somewhere, probably housing some mice.

Brestfeeding Is Not Good For Your Kids,Visit To Know http://www.healthuse.com/2009/09/safe-why-for-breastfeeding-most-important-tips/

• Always wear breast-pads in public, no matter what. The day you go commando and pop out to the shop to buy a loaf of bread, will be the day that you will happily be chatting away to the shop assistant about the marvels of parenthood when just the mere mention of your darling baby will cause two very large wet patches to appear through your t-shirt.

• When wearing your breast-pads, make sure they are inserted securely, avoiding them falling from your person at any given moment. Also ensure that if you take them out of your bra to feed, that you don’t forget to put them back in, and then realise half way down the street that you have left them on the arm of the sofa in Starbucks.

• Don’t go to the bother of putting together the millions of intricate and unfathomable pieces that make up a breast pump, then expressing the milk, dismantling the breast pump to wash and sterilise it, only to do it all over again a few hours later, if you are never actually going to use the aforementioned milk.

• If your baby bites down on your nipple with a new tooth whilst feeding and then looks up at you and smiles, make it known that this kind of behaviour is totally unacceptable, and do everything in your power to make sure that this never ever happens again.

• If a fellow mother at your baby yoga class offers to breastfeed your crying baby for you, allowing you five minutes to do your saluting the sun sequence, politely grab your baby and get the hell out of there. Don’t ever return.

• When your well-meaning midwife tells you that within weeks you will be so confident that you will be able to feed your baby at the same time as answering the door to the postman without him noticing, don’t believe her.

• If your baby is a noisy or erratic feeder try to avoid getting your boobs out in a public place such as a café or bus stop.

• Likewise, if your boobs tend to resemble over-inflated footballs just before a feed, avoid feeding in public, as you may end up showering anyone within a one-metre radius.

• One day you will shove your boobs in your baby’s face and she may sigh, roll her eyes and push you away while depositing some pureed carrot on your nipple. This is when you should probably start to think about weaning.

Breastfeeding Vs Bottle Feeding

hello want to find out mums opinions on breastfeeding vs. bottle feeding?

im doing an year 12 assignment for child studies and i want to know what the mums out there think about breastfeeding vs. bottle feeding etc… the pros and cons

now this is just my opinion.. but breastfeeding of course is best for baby..

now, I LOVE the bond that i have with my daughter that I believe that I got from breastfeeding. of course i would have bonded with breastfeeding.. but I feel we are stronger for breastfeeding..

my daughter is never sick, however all her cousins which all three were forumla feed are ALWAYS sick.. like ever week it is something new, infections left and right.

i noticed also with bottle feeding my brother in law just props up the bottle and leaves his son to go at it… which come on, is that bonding NO!, also bad for the baby, he may over eat that way, choke ect.

breastmilk tastes better than formula.. formula tastes like just that.. some formula some people came up with and there a whole bunch of nasty stuff together.. and called it milk.. well breastmilk is a sweet and natural milk made just for human babies.. that IS why we have breast right?

I wouldn’t ever think about putting formula in my babies belly.. but for others they wouldn’t have it any other way but to use formula..

okay.. enough of my rant…

Difference in nutrition of breast-feeding versus formula?

Breastfeeding Returning To Work

breastfeeding returning to work
can anyone give my any advise? returning to work and still breastfeeding?

im breastfeeding my 6month old son and im due back to work in 6weeks , and i dont wont to stop breastfeeding. my boss is fine with me to express, and for me to not work night on a tempory basis due to me still breastfeeding.the thing i need advise with is that my boss said ill have to return to working nights ,6 months after returning to work regardless to me still breastfeeding at that time. when my son is 1 year old i may not be still breastfeeding , but if i am can my boss make me work nights ? she is making me feel presured in to giving up sooner than i’d like help

you can pump the milk and freeze it for up to 3 month.
at 6 month you should start your child on baby foods and slowly reduce breastfeeding. Maybe you can reduce it slowly to one breast meal a day and maybe nurse him in the morning and snuggle while still in bed. That worked well for my daughter and me.

I was diagnosed with PND today, my son is 4 weeks old, i have been told that it is best if i stop breastfeeding Ethan- i am heartbroken as bfing was the one thing i really wanted to do :(
my question is which is the best formula (uk), i have heard cow and gate is quite good but also heard good things about SMA, how do i go about switching him to formula, do i go cold turkey or pump and dump the breastmilk.
it is one of the reasons that is causing me stress, i am also on citalopram and not allowed to bf and take it

Whoa, Whoa, whoa… you are receiving some VERY outdated advice. I am assuming that PND is post-natal depression?

There are VERY few medications that make you HAVE to stop breastfeeding. I am attaching some links for you. Essentially it comes down to cancer drugs as most other medications have a breastfeeding friendly alternative.

I have had PND TWICE and breastfed both a children until they were over two years old. You don’t HAVE to stop. As a matter of fact stopping will make it worst as it causes your hormones to crash and you will spin out of control.

Get your physician to contact Dr. Hales who studies medications and breastfeeding. http://neonatal.ttuhsc.edu/lact/medicationforumspage.html

Contact Dr. Newman in Canada – http://www.drjacknewman.com/ , he answers e-mails VERY quickly.

Please don’t wean him if you don’t want to, this is something that happens to a lot of woman and outdated “advice” like you have received is very harmful to you and your baby. Perhaps you can change that for the woman after you by educating your doctor. You owe it to yourself.

EDIT: I took citalopram for well over a year while breastfeeding, it is safe. You are okay.

Bottle Vs Breastfeeding

Vs. breastfeeding. Formula VS natural birth. Medicated?

I am a brestfeeding mother but I have curious as to why many breastfeeding mothers to call those who formula feed ugly kids their mothers or lazy or irresponsible. I agree that breastfeeding is best. but not for everyone. Some women try to find it very difficult for the child or the habit of blocking or not. Why can not we just accept the settings, even if we disagree. On the other Why hand the formula to give nursing mothers fuck mothers nursing in public. You feed your baby in public why we should not. There is nothing wrong with our choice of our lock Shild our chest during dinner or watching a movie in the theater. I am not criticizing you shake a bottle of formula. Why it is great for making Natural vs. medicated birth. I had two epidurals and give birth at home this time. But why does a sound of pity for my deliveries to mothers who have natural medicinal and why I have harsh words from people who think I should be in the hospital.

I do I can not stand it anymore. No I'm going to mention names, but some of you are idiots. I am one of those fans that breastfeeding is best. That said, there's a reason I know with certainty that breastfeeding is not right. Glactosimia (pardon my spelling). As rare as this condition is I have two friends who gave birth to a child with this condition. Apart that I am a bit irritated by women who swear they just make enough milk, or say that her baby was not in place. There are very few pediatricians out there who know what they are talking about when it comes to breastfeeding and even fewer hospitals are really promote breastfeeding in force. I think that's the saddest thing for many women listen to these doctors as if God himself. Good for you for your baby home! I wish you all the best! The biggest idiot who answered this said it is not only an advantage breastfeeding, which is superior to formula. You are not even capable of breastfeeding as you are a man down so you can not answer these questions with something stupid. How many women who are on the fence have read your post? As regards the epidural I have them as I have caesarean sections for all my births. You want to criticize my cesarean go ahead, but no doctor is going to try a vaginal birth and why I was the first because the baby was dying (yes is dead anyway), then 38 hours. I wish people did not consider the epidural as a kind of safe. They are not. As Diceman2 emphasized that there are real concerns there. Finally, I have no idea where anyone filling a baby bottle in his mouth without a serious attempt to nurse down to express the opinion of a nursing mother in public. Why get all these kinds of responses of mothers who breastfeed because we are passionate to the cause. There is nothing even close to the gain breastfeeding.

Increase Breastfeeding Milk Supply

When breastfeeding, many mothers often wonder how to increase their milk supply because it is so hard to measure how much our baby is eating at any given time. If you feel like you might have a low milk supply, there are a couple of things you can do to help this problem.

Feed Your Baby More Often

Speaking from experience, the more you feed your baby, the more milk you will produce. When my daughter was born, I had a very weak milk supply. My milk didn’t come in for a full 9 days, and when it did come, it was only about a half ounce every couple hours. My daughter wasn’t gaining any weight and I wound up supplementing with formula for about 3 weeks. But I still fed her. I fed her every hour on the dot. I know this sounds extreme, but I did it. Many lactation consultants and doctors recommend that you feed your baby at least every 2 hours, but if you have problems with milk supply, you have to do it every hour, at least until your supply builds up.

Pump

In conjunction with increasing your feedings, you should be pumping as well. This is what made my milk come in, in the first place. Every time you feed you child, you should pump for 15 minutes after your child is done eating. The stimulation that you get from pumping will tell your breasts that there is a bigger demand for milk and they will create more. You should also start doing a power pumping session, at least once a day. A power pumping session is basically pumping your breasts for 15 minutes, and then waiting 15 minutes, pumping for 15 minutes, and then waiting 15 minutes. This puts a lot of demand for milk on your breasts, and doing this every day will definitely create more milk.

Put Everything Else on the Backburner

What I mean by this is, make everything less important than feeding your child and building your milk supply. If you are feeding every hour, pumping for 15 minutes after every feed and doing a power pump session every day, you really don’t have any time for anything else. Get some help from family members or friends to get the daily cleaning and laundry done. Building your milk supply is a full time job and you shouldn’t be able to do anything else for a while.

If you do this every day for at least a couple of weeks, you should start seeing results rapidly. I am proof of this. I went from pumping a half ounce from both breasts to filling a 5 oz bottle with both breasts in a matter of months.

Stop Milk Supply Breastfeeding

Best way to get my milk supply back?

I stopped breastfeeding for a few weeks due to a breast infection. I miss it and want to get milk supply back? Any suggestions?

You can try taking Fenugreek capsules 2-4 3x a day. That worked for me. Also make sure you are drinking alot of water and eating right. Some mothers find eating oatmeal helps their milk production.

You can also try cluster pumping. Pump for 10 min, 10 min off, 10 min on, 10 min off, etc. for one hour.

It also matters what kind of pump you are using. I had an Evenflo pump and it sucked. I then rented a hospital grade Medela pump and it made a world of difference. You can’t judge your milk supply on how much you pump for many reasons. For one, like l said, all pumps are different in their efficiency to get the milk out and also, babies can usually get 1-2 ounces out more than you can pump.

Here is a great website:

http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/low-su…

I have never personally tried the tea, just Fenugreek. I have read in various places if you take Blessed Thistle in conjunction with the Fenugreek it works better than just taking one or the other.

The best thing for you to do is nurse whenever possible, as much as you can.

Scroll down a bit and there is a list of things written by mothers:

Increase Breastfeeding Supply

increase breastfeeding supply
How do I increase my milk supply?

I’ve been breastfeeding for four months now without any problems until recently. I had a cold so I took Sudafed and ever since then, my milk supply has decreased. I’m lucky if I can pump an ounce and it’s getting really frustrating. What can I do to increase my supply?

Pump more frequently and longer, even if you don’t get anything!
Also there is a herbal supplement called Fenugreek that works (worked great for me!)
Beware, though, it makes you smell like maple syrup.

Make sure you are drinking lots of water and eating well and plenty. Lots of fruits, veggies, protein. Also, make sure you’re getting lots of rest, this helps with supply. If your stressed, relax, stress can decrease milk supply. :)

If none of those things work you could try talking with a lactation consultant. They’re wonderful.

Breastfeeding At Night Only

breastfeeding at night only
Does anyone breast only at night?

I'm going back to work next week. My baby is 10 weeks old and being in the center. I was breastfeeding, but unfortunately I have to supplement with formula during the day while she is in daycare because they do not have time to pump at work. I want to continue breastfeeding and hope that I will be able to feed her the morning before working hours, and 16 for the rest of the night. Someone else does and work for you? I really hope it does not dry out if I can continue to give my baby the benefits of breast milk.

Yes! It can work. I had to return to work when my baby was 3 weeks. I worked a few hours, but when she was 10 weeks, I was about 12 hours. I pump 1 or 2 times a day at first but over time it has aged. Thus, it became increasingly child during the day so far is 6 months, always gets the formula while I work. I can breastfeed her first thing in the morning and evening. On days off sometimes nurse in the afternoon, but she seems confused lol … feeds primarily on only bed because it seems too distracted and impatient with the flow when awake. Sometimes it seems almost useless to only nurse at night, but when we are close and is brought to me, while getting the best milk for her, I change my mind. It is increasingly fine and perfect health that way. Hope it works for you.
