Details on Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Health magazines worldwide are talking about women in menopause and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). But the same question keeps popping up. What are bioidentical hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are made in a lab from plants, and they are comprised of molecules that are the same as the endogenous hormones made in a person’s body. These are not ‘exactly’ the same, but the molecules are “identical” – ergo the name bio-bidentical hormones. Bioidentical hormones are often referred to as natural hormones.

There are still a number of women who are afraid of taking hormones, and some doctors are leary as well. This is because everyone remembers the news that came out surrounding the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI). This government sponsored study that ended up with overly emphasized negative results released in May 2002, caused women and doctors to discontinue the use of hormone replacement therapy.

Some researchers and medical experts believe this initiative was oddly monitored and incompetently analyzed. This historic report was in fact on synthetic drugs with hormone-like effects, PremPro and Premarin, substances that were donated by the pharmaceutical company that had sold them since 1942. Unfortunately, the assumption was that the drugs would be found safe and effective, but in essence, nothing could have been further from the truth.

People can take bioidentical hormones in several ways: pills, gels, drops under the tongue, or via topical creams. of course there are a number of approaches to the dosing and blood levels and these have all been clumped together as “natural,” but the reality is that none of them are truly natural if they don’t mimic a rhythm that your body can recognize as natural. There is only one bioidentical hormone therapy protocol that is biomimetic – meaning it offers a standardized rhythmic, cycling of the hormones, estrogen and progersterone, and it does mimic the body’s rhythm.

Many women have been experiencing great results from this rhythmically dosed bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and have happily given their personal accounts of the menopause experiences and testimonials on the Wiley Protocol website. In fact, some of them have also made comments or provided video testimonials on the Bioidenticals Channel on YouTube.

Gels, pills and drops do not pulse in our bodies, like endogenous hormones pulse. A healthy young woman’s endogenous hormones go way up and way down low and trigger different genes; genes that grow cells, stop cells from growing, and tell cells to die.

Women go through various hormone states in life; 1) young and cycling 2) pregnant, 3) breastfeeding or 4) declining hormones. Doesn’t it make sense that number 1 — young and cycling – seems to replicate that state of hormonal health the best? Why? Because the other two templates are too hard to recreate physically and experimentally.

What this means is that women cycle up to a peak of estrogen and then the body lets it fall and then brings it down again for a second smaller peak. Progesterone peaks on day 21. Healthy women have a period that lasts for five days with a heavier flow on day two and three. Therefore, one concludes bio-identical hormones can only be truly bio-identical if the hormones for replacement mimic not only those chemically found in the body, but also mimic the natural biological process as well.

What’s more, new research is focusing on healthy hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and suggests that women must cycle their hormones and have a menstrual bleed to be truly safe from cardiovascular events. In one study a combined cyclic regimen with monthly bleeding creates a lower cardiovascular risk for women than continuous-combined estrogen/progesterone/progestin therapy, which does not cause a menstrual bleed. The study also found that overall there was no increased risk of heart attacks in current users of HRT compared to women who had never taken hormones. The main investigator of this research, Dr. Ellen Løkkegaard, is a gynecologist at the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, Denmark. She said, “The main message is that when hormone therapy is indicated for a woman, then a cyclic combined regimen should be preferred, and that application via the skin or the vagina is associated with a decreased risk of myocardial infarction.”

The observational study, the largest to look at the effects of HRT since the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) trial in 1991, followed 698,098 healthy 51-69 year-old Danish women. There is rhythm to the way hormones work, and there is a beat like music. Pills, gels, drops and static dosing do not honor the music. But the Wiley Protocol biomimetic, rhythmic bioidentical hormone therapy does. When women have enough hormones they feel good, and some even feel better than they did during their entire lives.

Getting Pregnant Breastfeeding

Surgeon General Launches Breastfeeding Support Initiative

United States Surgeon General, Regina Benjamin issued a Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding the last week in January 2011.  Benjamin hopes the initiative will educate the public about the numerous benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and babies as well as generate support in the workplace and home for nursing moms.  The program will employ public service announcements, airing on over 1,000 U.S. television stations, to raise community awareness regarding breastfeeding benefits.

Breastfeeding Statistics

Of the 75 percent of mothers who begin breastfeeding, only 43 percent continue to do so after six months and of those, only 13 percent are doing so to the exclusion of formula and milk substitutes. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for a minimum of six months.  Benjamin hopes her initiative will increase the number of women who initially choose to breastfeed to 82 percent and the rate of those exclusively breastfeeding at six months to 25 percent.   Pregnant mothers, trying to decide whether to breastfeed, should talk to their OB/GYN doctors about any questions and concerns.

Workplace Support

Benjamin outlined several approaches meant to encourage women to breastfeed.  She hopes to pass mandates requiring employers to offer private areas where mothers can pump breast milk during the workday.  The employers should set up the spaces somewhere other than the employee restroom and must offer sufficient breaks for expressing breast milk.  Benjamin advocates that employers provide paid leave for new mothers and access to lactation experts through their benefits programs.

OB/GYN and Pediatric Clinic Support

When initially launching her Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding, the Surgeon General pushed for OB/GYN physicians and pediatricians to provide educational information and support for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.  Women often hide their decision to breastfeed from peers and employers because of the media’s persistent sexualization of the breast and employers’ disdain for the practice.  Educational information from healthcare providers, professional staff, and public service announcements will raise public awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding for mothers, babies, and the community in general.

Lactation Support

Many OB/GYN clinics have partnerships with certified lactation consultants.  Certified lactation consultants specialize in clinical breastfeeding management. Many certification organizations exist, but the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) is one of the most well known of these.  Some OB/GYN and pediatric offices may have full-time lactation consultants on staff.  Other certified consultants work in public clinics, hospitals, or own a private practice.  Lactation consultants advise mothers about the different types of breast pumps available; breastfeeding issues; breast milk nutrition; exercising while breastfeeding; and a variety of other information associated with breastfeeding.

Final Encouraging Facts

Compelling empirical evidence shows that breastfed babies have higher IQs than formula-fed babies and have a lower incidence of death from serious illness that carries on well into the later childhood years.  Breastfeeding mothers have an easier time returning to their pre-pregnancy size and weights and have a lower risk of postpartum depression.  Always sterile, always the right temperature, and always free – breast milk provides optimum nutrition for babies.  Mothers take a stand and offer your babies the very best.

Breastfeeding Allergy

breastfeeding allergy

Cow’s Milk Allergy And Babies

Allergy to cow’s milk is the most prevalent form of food allergy that primarily affects children. Most infants and babies fortunately outgrow cow’s milk allergy during their second to third year of formula milk intake.

Like most allergies, cow’s milk allergies is not curable, but rather, they are treatable. In that sense, people and children born with it should live with dairy-free diets all their lives to avoid cow’s milk allergies.

A close look at cow’s milk

Regular cow’s milk is composed of carbohydrates or sugar, vitamins, water, minerals, fat and proteins. It is the protein in cow’s milk that brings about or serves as allergens that cause cow’s milk allergy.

Parents should also learn that breastfeeding infants is not an assurance that the baby would not develop the allergy. However, studies found that breastfed kids are less likely to form food allergies of any kind.

Mothers pass along cow’s milk proteins to their kids through breastfeeding. Thus, it would be more appropriate to say that it is not the mother’s milk that incur reaction, but the proteins that are mixed through the mom’s milk, which is attributed to the mother’s diet.

In some cases, some infants develop immunity to cow’s milk allergy during their breastfeeding years, but surprisingly develop cow’s milk allergy when they stop taking in mom’s milk for formula milk.

Symptoms of cow’s milk allergy

It would be easy to tell when an infant or a kid has developed cow’s milk allergy. Parents should be very observant of their children’s conditions so they could immediately seek professional and medical help at the onset of the allergy.

Babies with cow’s milk allergy exhibit skin rashes or eczema. Most cases, the babies experience diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal cramps or abdominal pains.

Because babies could not talk or complain about how they are feeling, parents should heed to their infants’ cries and discomfort. Constant and regular visits to the kid’s pediatrician would be really helpful.

However, it should also be noted that it is not only cow’s milk allergy that causes rashes, eczema, diarrhea and abdominal pain. In that regard, consultation to the pediatrician is needed so the parents would know the real disease discomforting the baby.

Early detection of cow’s milk allergy would be very helpful because early modification and elimination of dairies in the kid’s diet would be very beneficial and necessary over time.

Treatment and prevention of cow’s milk allergy

Severe symptom of cow’s milk allergy would need special prescription medications from the doctor. Usually, to treat such cases, antihistamines and epinephrine are administered to the patient.

Parents of children with cow’s milk allergy should also keep supplies of those drugs in their medicine cabinets because they would be necessary if ever the children would accidentally take in cow’s milk.

Infants and babies will be switched to hydrolystate or soy-based milk formulas from milk-based formulas. Remember, it is the protein contained in cow’s milk that cause the allergy so switching to another formula milk brand would not be helpful.

Mothers who breast-feed infants and babies diagnosed with cow’s milk should instead cut intakes or eliminate dairy products in their diet so the cow’s milk protein would not be passed on to the infants.

As general prevention measure, all formula milk based on cow’s milk should be eliminated on the baby’s diet.

Breastfeeding From Bottle

Benefits of Breastfeeding for Both Mother and Baby

There are many benefits of breastfeeding.  This is nature’s way of naturally providing for babies.  We have taken this natural way and turned it into something that is offensive and unnatural.  Today many people think that the “normal” way to feed an infant is to use a bottle with formula.  While this may be necessary in some cases, the many women have enough milk, but choose to use formula instead.  The benefits of breastfeeding are for both mother and baby.

The milk is incredible.  It is the perfect temperature, the areola is already sterile, and it is easy to carry with you wherever you may go and these are some nice benefits of breastfeeding.  With formula, however, you have to sterilize the bottles, and then warm up the milk to the right temperature.  The milk contains the perfect balance of nutrients, including fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and antibodies.  Formula tries to imitate breast milk, but doesn’t come close.  Also the milk changes to meet the needs of the growing baby.  Formula stays the same from newborn to toddler.  The antibodies that are found in the mother are passed through the milk to the infant and are one of the many benefits of breastfeeding.  This protects the infant from many illnesses as the infant has a weak immune system.

Breastfed babies are healthier with fewer infections.  This means less visits to the doctor and less use of antibiotics.  Breastfed babies also have fewer food allergies.  By breastfeeding there is a lower risk of contamination from water sources or from bacteria getting into their digestive system.  Because of the benefits of breastfeeding, research has found that breastfed babies are at lower risk for Type 1 & 2 diabetes and obesity.  Breastfeeding can reduce the risk of tooth decay.  Some formula fed babies will go to sleep with their bottles in their mouths, causing the milk to stay on the teeth and encouraging tooth decay.

There are also many benefits of breastfeeding for the mother.  Breastfeeding burns more calories than when pregnant, reduces the uterus size and minimizes the bleeding after birth.  It delays ovulation and reduces the risk of breast cancer.  Even when a mother is sick, there is no cause to worry about passing along the illness to the infant as the infant is receiving the antibodies from the mother, so is less likely to become sick.  Practically speaking, breastfeeding also saves money.  There are no bottles to buy and no formula either, which reduces the waste that is produced for formula fed babies.  There is a wonderful bond that is developed between mother and baby when breastfeeding.  With all those benefits of breastfeeding and so many more, who would want to use formula?

Breastfeeding When Sick

Did you get sick more often while breastfeeding?

When I was nursing my girls, I caught every cold and flu that came along. I did not get sick every month when pregnant or when I am not pregnant or nursing.
Someone is reporting all my questions; I expect this one to be reported too.

I’m currently exclusively breastfeeding my almost 4mth old son. I haven’t gotten sick yet, but I’m just waiting on cold and flu season then we will see. I did get a flu shot though but I think it was for last years strain. Do you take vitamins and eat enough healthy foods? Do you get enough rest (its kinda hard with baby but possible)? Breastfeeding can run your body down easily if you don’t be careful. With my first son I got sick like every 2 weeks when I was pregnant.

Breastfeeding Sick Mom

Should breastfeeding continue if dog is sick?

And what will happen to the puppies if they continue to nurse in there mom? The mother dog vomit.

That won’t pass through the breast milk.
They would get sick if she had something contagious and ate the vomit.
If you don’t let them nurse then they will definetly get sick.

*However this is assuming your dog has had a Parvo shot. That is contagious no matter what and usually fatal*

Breastfeeding Help Video

Breastfeeding question?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxv6R9fUO74&feature=player_embedded

Yes, we’ve all seen this video, or at least most of us have, but I never actually asked, what do you think of it? Do you think she’s doing her girls a favor, and helping them, or do you think it’s just sick at this point?

I, personally, do not think it’s benefiting them at all, I think it’s setting them up for some serious ridicule from their peers, though. And, I think it’s weird, and gross.

Opinions?
Also, I understand when people say, “well, you don’t put a time limit on putting bottle nipples in your baby’s mouth and see nothing wrong with that” .. well, yes, there is a time frame, usually around 1 year of age babies should be off the bottle, but every baby is different .. however, if there were moms bottle-feeding their children at 8 years old, it would be a MUCH bigger deal than this!

disturbing beyond doubt!

Lose Your Mummy Tummy

Pregnancy naturally separates a mother’s outermost abdominal muscles to make room for her growing uterus. Called a diastasis, this separation doesn’t fully close up in 98 percent of new moms. The larger the diastasis, the weaker the muscles and the greater chance for mom to develop back problems down the road. Of perhaps greater concern for moms, new and veteran alike, the larger the diastasis, th…

Breastfeeding Twins Can be Made Into an Enjoyable Task!

Having twins is double celebration! However, breastfeeding twins is double hard work! Twins means double tantrums. But, if you know how to handle two tiny tots simultaneously, they give you some of the most wonderful moments of life!

One of the challenges of having two babies is overcoming breastfeeding problems. Will they get hungry together? Will you have to feed them one by one? There are lots of breastfeeding questions lingering in the minds of new moms. Here are some ways to help you handle the task of breastfeeding twin babies.

Making A Breastfeeding Chart

Prepare a visual chart of breastfeeding. This will help you know the time to feed your baby, by just looking at her. In case of twins, you need to prepare two charts. You should talk to your doctor regarding chart preparation. In addition to this, you need to discuss about baby food and baby formula that is right for your baby. It is best to give your milk, instead of giving baby formula for the initial months.

Your chart consists of columns like feeing time, meals fed, amount fed, and other such important details. This way, you will get an idea of the frequency of meals and the time your babies are hungry.

Remember; as your baby reaches 7-12 months of age, she will develop her own taste in food. You have twins does not mean, both of them will develop the same taste. There are common cases where twin have contrasting tastes and behavior. One of them may suck more milk than the other, or have different meal timings. The chart will help you keep a track on your twins’ feeding.

Handling Twins’ Call Of Hunger

A smart mom will always prepare her baby food in advance. This way, your babies get food instantly when they call for hunger and need not wait and wail loudly. It’s a good idea to prepare baby food at home. It’s fresh and hygienic, plus loaded with nutrients. Besides this, the food is free of preservatives and is of good quality. If you don’t want to create a hubbub in the house by two screaming babies, prepare baby food in advance!

Take the help of your doctor or midwife regarding positions for breastfeeding. You can buy breastfeeding tops as well as breastfeeding cover to ease in this task. Read articles and books on breastfeeding twins and enjoy the task!
