Can I supplement my baby’s breastfeeding with formula?
Yes, but it will expose the baby to risks of various diseases, including asthma, allergies, and many others. If you really want to nurse, you should wait until baby is at least 2 months old *and* has been nursing with no problems for at least 1 month. Then the risk of the baby choosing to wean to a bottle is reduced.
There is no such thing as a bottle or artificial nipple that is “closest to mother”; in fact, such advertising is against international agreements. Just try until you find the one that your baby likes (different babies have different favorites).
Your baby may need fewer feedings if you give a bottle (regardless of whether there is formula or pumped milk in the bottle). Formula may make the feedings even farther apart, but this is because your baby can’t digest the formula, so it sits in her/his stomach for long periods of time making baby *think* she/he is full and asking for fewer feedings than is good for her/him. If weight gain becomes a problem, eliminating formula may help.
