Breastfeeding and thrush…should I stop nursing?
My poor little 9 day old baby was just diagnosed with a pretty serious case of thrush. The dr. prescribed medication for both of us (although I don’t have any symptoms as of yet). Should I stop breastfeeding until her symptoms go away? I’m afraid we’ll pass it back and forth between each other. I don’t want to stop breastfeeding because I’m afraid she won’t take the breast after a day or two of bottle feeding. Any ideas of what to do?
Continue to breastfeed. Do not discard your milk. Your doctor should have given your baby medicine that is in the form of an oral suspension. if he didn’t allready tell you to, you should also gently clean your nipples after each feeding and then swab the entire nipple and area around the areola with the medicine. Also, change your bra often so as not to recontaminate. Make sure that you sanitize anything that goes into your baby’s mouth after he uses it. There no reason to discontinue breastfeeding.
Whats with the thumbs down? This is medically sound advice. Ask any lactation consultant.
