Why do so many people think it’s abnormal or odd to breastfeed for the recommended 2 years??

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for a minimum of 1 year and then after a year as long as mutually desired. And the World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding for a minimum of 2 years and then after that as long as mutually desired.

So, why is it that so many people think it’s odd or abnormal to see a woman breastfeeding a toddler? And why do so few women make the commitment to nurse the recommended length of time?

Because in the US breasts are seen as sexual, not as a food source (the best food source) for infants and children.
I am going to breastfeed as long as my baby wants to, if he/she wants to stop at a year then fine, if he/she wants to breastfeed until they are 3 then that’s fine too. Breastfeeding does not hurt a child, but stopping too soon can be emotionally devastating.
