Most common strains of yeast are resistant to Nystatin, so that probably isn’t helping that much. I recommend gentian violet or grapefruit seed extract (GSE). You can get gentian violet at your local pharmacy behind the counter, although you might want to call ahead to make sure they have it. You can get GSE at most health food stores.

Here’s some instructions on how to gentian violet: http://www.kellymom.com/newman/06gentian_violet.html

This link tells you how to use GSE: http://www.kellymom.com/newman/c-candida_protocol.html#gse (you don’t have to use it with the APNO. It will usually work just fine by itself, although you can use both). Here’s more info on using GSE: http://www.drjaygordon.com/development/bf/thrush.asp

I found that gentian violet worked wonders for thrush. The pain was almost gone by the end of the day.

Any time you have sore nipples, it’s important to go back to the basics of latch, as well, just to ensure that you’re doing everything possible to prevent soreness: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/start/basics/latch-resources.html

It’s best to avoid using lanolin if you’re having problems with yeast, too, since it can contribute to yeast growth. It’s best to let your breasts get as much air as possible, so I would avoid wearing a bra, or even a shirt, if you can. You can put a cloth diaper or rag under your breasts if you need to catch any leakage. Nursing pads can contribute to yeast as well, so I would avoid using them and leave your breasts open and give them air.

Probiotics are also very helpful in getting rid of yeast. You can purchase probiotic capsules at your local health food store. There are baby probiotics as well. You can put a little powder on your finger and let your baby suck it off.

Try to avoid sugars and simple carbs as well, as they also contribute to yeast growth.
