What if my 7-wk old newborn doesn’t poop for >36hrs after I switched formula? I’m nursing on top of formula.
I am breastfeeding my son but also supplementing him with formula because I found out he is not gaining 1oz/day with breastfeeding alone. He has a sensitive gastric system so he was placed on Nutrimigen. 5 days ago, my son decided to NOT like the taste and we tried him on Similac Advance, he tolerated it. Before, for him to tolerate formula, I had to give him Mylecon every formula feeding. But now, he has been pooping okay and passing gas and no belly ache with out any Mylecon. However, something changed. It has been 36 hours since he last pooped. He is still peeing good. He is passing gas. He is very alert. My husband thinks I’m crazy to be very concerned. Am I paranoid? More importantly, what can I do?
Surprisingly a infant can go up to a week without a bowel movement without any concern. Especially if you are breast feeding. His system seems to be working just fine if he is still passing gas and urinating often. Don’t worry it’s completely normal. Call your doctor if you are still concerned but again it’s completely normal for a infant to go up to 1 week without passing a stool.
