Can a breastfeeding newborn poop too much?
She is 4 days old and my milk just came in yesterday. At first, I was worried that she wasn’t getting enough, but now her poops are changing from the dark meconium to a looser dark green, which I know is good. My only concern: she’s pooping very often. Since midnight, she’s gone 6-7 times…normal?
Sherri, the poop should be yellow by day 5 or 6. It has to change gradually from black to yellow somehow…
Nothing to worry about. Newborns usually poop often — sometimes with every feed. And you WANT her to be pooping often — bilirubin is excreted in the stool, so the more she poops, the less likely she is to get jaundiced. (And, of course, it means that you have plenty of milk, and she’s getting plenty to eat.)
