breastfeeding teaching
How can put my baby to sleep without latch on my breast and sleep longer?

I’m breastfeeding my baby (almost 5 months old) but he doesn’t go to sleep without latch on me. Also, he doesn’t nap frequently and he still awaking up during the night. He naps 3 times for 45 min, and he sleeps 6 hrs interrupted. I would like to teach him to sleep on his own. A friend told me that if he sleeps on his own, he’d take longer naps and sleep better at night. Is that true? Thanks!

What you can do is try to tire him out during the day and don’t let him take any naps close to bed time. Start a sleepy ritual: bath, book, cuddles, bed. When he gets into the swing of things, the bath itself will make him tired. When he wakes up at night, let him cry for a few minutes just to see if he’s just woken up or if he really needs you. I did this with my son because I was honestly lazy and found out that he had just woken up and went back to sleep on his own. If he really does need you, give him the attention he absolutely needs and nothing more. If he’s hungry, feed him, then put him to bed. If he’s wet, then clean him and put him to bed. If he just needs comfort, well, he’s going to have to cry it out and take care of himself, otherwise you’ll be run ragged for months to come. Good luck.
