Breastfeeding help.?
I’m a first time mom, and i decided to breastfeed my baby girl. The first couple of days my nipples hurt so much they even started to bleed, so i took a break and gave my baby formula instead. After the soreness of my nipple was gone the week after, my doctor told me to get back on breastfeeding her and pumping. I have tried pumping but i only get a few drops out of them. i even try putting them in her mouth and she got some but it’s never enough, and i have to continue with a bottle to satisfy her hunger. I really want to try again, so is it too late? Did i lose my chance on breastfeeding my baby? or is there still hope for her? Please somebody help me.
No you haven’t lost your chance. What you need to do is feed often, at least every 2 hours, even more often if you can stand it, and make sure she completely empties one breast before starting on the other. What you want is her sucking and stimulating your breasts – even if they’re empty… this will increase supply. Stop bottle feeding her… You need to get her accustomed to having smaller feeds and more often (just for the time being, until your supply increases). If you substitute with formula after every breastfeed, its just taking away stimulation time from your breasts, which is what they need at the moment. Doing this it shouldn’t take long at all for your supply to increase.
Also, if your using a hand pump, I find they don’t work very well, I could only ever get a few drops myself. An automatic electrical one always got a good amount though, if you can afford it, you should get one.
Once you’ve breastfed your daughter, at the end of every feed you should pump for about 5 mins – even if nothing comes out, what you want is the stimulation – this is what increases supply.
