Breastfeeding and sore nipples?
I have been breastfeeding my son for two and a half weeks now and have developed one very sore nipple, I am pretty sure its a latching issue because I have noticed that he isn’t able to fit more then just around my nipple into his mouth, (on this side) he seems to be doing fine on the other breast and had been doing well on this one till yesterday evening when I started having the pain, I cant see any cracks there has been no bleeding and I dont see any signs or symptoms of thrush other then its painful, it tender even when hes not feeding and when he latches on its very painful and then slowly gets a little better but still is uncomfortable for the majority of the feed, any help or suggestions to get healing and a better latch would be greatly appreciated. Please note I have large breasts 40f and my nipples and areola are quite large as well
Ask your doctor for a prescription for APNO, i’s amazing! It’s a preventative medicinal ointment that helps prevent infection, thrush, swelling and redness, it’s a mixture of anti inflammatory, anti fungal, antobiotic and steroid ointments that ease the pain caused by bad latch or sensitivity at the start of breastfeeding. My son had bad latch that I could never get him out of, but once I started using that, it stopped hurting.
If you can’t get it (some pharmacies just won’t make it up), use lanolin after ever feed. The Lansinoh brand is great.
Even though my daughter has a good latch, I find myself very sensitive and have resigned myself to using nipple shields. They’re not for everyone, but they make a good last resort if the pain is so bad that you can’t bear to feed your son. But only use them for as long as it takes you to heal fully, they can be habit forming and he may be reluctant to go back to that breast once you get rid of the nipple shield, but it’s very possible to break the habit. Medela do nipple shields in all sizes so the size of your nipple shouldn’t be a problem. Try the medium size first and if that doesn’t suit, buy bigger or smaller to suit.
