Can you catch something from breastfeeding someone else’s baby?
I saw the videos of Salma Hayek breastfeeding a baby in Africa and I was touched. But I was curious: catch she catch something from that baby? I searched online and I couldn’t find an answer. Anyone know?
Normally you think of milk coming out sort of a “one way” kind of thing. But it is an opening that might come into contact with secretions from the baby. It’s probably not very likely, but I just wondered. It’s not a big deal if it’s your own child, but another person’s baby…well, who knows.
For the record I’m breastfeeding my 5 month old son and I would pitch in to help another woman and baby in distress. Personally I prefer to pump for them, but if it was say Hurricane Katrina, you bet I’d breastfeed the other baby.
Nothing serious like HIV, which is not passed through saliva. It would be possible to get thrush if the baby were infected, or else mastitis if certain bacteria were present in the baby’s mouth. But feeding a starving child, IMO, is worth the minor risks.
