Nipple shield to correct latching problem?
i have read somewhere that using a nipple protector while breastfeeding will help in correcting latching problem. has anyone tried it and does it work?
my 2 weeks old girl is having latching problem due to bottle and now she is just nipple suckling, which isn’t good and it hurts.
bought myself a set of nipple protector from Avent, but read in other threads that it might cause other problem later when the baby refuses to suckle without it?
any advice?
seeking help from lactation consultant or llli are not possible as i have given birth in Dubai and there are no such support over here..that’s why i am searching online for advice from mums with experiences to help me…:(
i had to use nipple shields with my 1st baby 10 years ago. she was very sick at delivery and spent a week on nicu. she couldnt latch on so i had to use nipple shields. she would feed lovely with them but not without them. in the end i did revert to a bottle because of the distress of her screaming wnenever i tried her without them. try them and if it works you could try cutting the top of the shield to see of she can suckle with more of your nipple protuding . i was told of this trick after i stopped and wish i had known about it before. my 2nd baby didnt want to know at all but my 3rd and 4th babies breastfed beautifully with no aids. are you latched on properly. ask your health visitor to check. if she is having probs because of the bottle abandon the bottle altogether. the baby needs all of your nipple in her mouth . remember nose to nipple, that is where the baby should be positioned and for her to come to your breast not the other way round. make sure her mouth is open fully and hold her head with 1 hand and your breast with your other. when her mouth is fully open bring her head to your breast with your fingers holding just below your nipple to ease it into her mouth. if she grabs your nipple release her mouth and start again. rub your nipple over her mouth to open and and get as much nipple into her mouth as poss. have you got got a surestart in your area. ask your health visitor. they can provide you with trained breastfeeding councillors. good luck
