Please help! I feel horrible about using a nipple shield!?
My son is now 4 months old. I have been using a nipple shield at every feeding because of my VERY flat nipples. I was given the nipple shield at the hospital from a lactation consultant. I was also not given much information about it from her. I was getting bruised from my son trying to latch on and was in a lot of pain so I was happy to have the relief, and I will admit the ease of using the nipple shield.
I read on the internet the other day that using a nipple shield was not ideal and had several cons to it, such as decreased milk supply. My son has had issues with his weight and I feel like this is all because I use a nipple shield. He is currently in the 6% for weight but is growing steadily. He has been able to latch on the past couple of days with out it, but has also become somewhat fussy at eatings.
How do I wean a baby from the nipple shield? Is it normal that he has been a bit fussy while breastfeeding?
If he is latching onto the breast without the nipple shield then just keep doing it with out it. He can be getting a little fussy because the flow is different when directly on the breast. This is something that he should get used to in a week. How is your milk supply? If it is decreased you can try to pump for about 10 minutes after he is done nursing. This stimulation will also help to increase your milk supply.
I’m sorry that the person who gave you a nipple shield didn’t tell you about the side effects. She really should have.
