Can I breastfeed thru a milk allergy?
I have a 2 mo old son with a suspected milk allergy. I have seen mucus in his stool and he is VERY
fussy at night after nursing all day. I have eliminated milk from diet with no change in baby. I do not want to stop breastfeeding – HELP!
The doctor suspects milk allergy. I have to give one bottle per day to get baby ready for daycare, that is when the crying started (3 weeks old)…we have switched from milk based to soy formula and now nutramigen. He is also on Zantac to see if it is acid reflux.
My son was allergic to dairy and I successfully breastfeed him until he grew out of the allergy which most children do by their first birthday.
If your son truly is allergic to dairy the only thing you need to do is cut all dairy from your diet. This includes cutting out more than just milk from your diet. Check out the website www.godairyfree.org.. It has TONS of great information on how to live a dairy free life. There are a lot of different words on labels that mean dairy which is why if you decide to go dairy free, most processed foods will be off limits. There is a list of all the words you need to look for listed on the above website.
As someone previously stated, it can take up to 2 weeks for all of the dairy to be eliminated from yourself and your son and to notice changes. If you are on a strictly no dairy diet for 2 weeks and you do not notice changes, either your son isn’t allergic to dairy or he may be allergic to something else as well. Our doctor told us often times, when a child is allergic to one thing, he has a higher chance of being allergic to something else (my point in case, my son would also break out in a rash when I ate citrus foods).
I successfully lived a dairy free lifestyle for 6 months so I could continue breastfeeding my son. At times it may be challenging but it can be done!!
Good luck!
