How do you deal with a bad pediatrician?
I work for a program that provides food for low-income populations. One of our best programs is that we provide formulas for infants. Because it’s federally funded, we have rules about which formulas we can provide. Good Start DHA/ARA and GSS Soy and GSS Natural Cultures are what we offer. Any other formula needs a prescription. We have a pediatrician who sees many of our clients who prescribes Nutramigen and Alimentum for almost every single baby. He tells moms that if a baby hiccups then he’s not tolerating the formula and needs a special formula. He tells parents that any spit-up (any at all) means they need a special formula. Most disturbing, he tells almost all our moms who are breastfeeding that their baby is probably not getting enough milk and prescribes Nutramigen. How do I deal with this? He’s the doctor so most moms listen to him, but more often than not I feel like he doesn’t have mom or baby’s best interest at heart.
omg, drop that sucker from your program!!!!! he’s obviously getting a kickback from the formula companies.
also, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE provide these women with solid resources to good breastfeeding support – www.drjacknewman.com is a fantastic website (leading bf authority in canada) and he will answer emails if they’re not in the FAQ.
i would also list him and your concerns with him on www.ratemd.com
