Is it normal for breasts to itch while breastfeeding?

I gave birth a week ago and I was nursing my baby. This is my first child. About 2 days ago the skin around my nipple became red, a bit like skin rash, itching like crazy. Is this normal, or might be developing infection? I was on antibiotics for a few days because I had a cesarean and I developed a mild infection in the skin around my injury. Perhaps the antibiotic is to help my breast itch? Help! Thanks –

You can get a yeast infection on your breasts for breastfeeding, your baby can pass (Thrush). You should call your gynecologist and pediatrician for some Nystatin. It's actually quite common, but if you do treat, you can still go back and thrush can be very painful for babies.
